Must confess, took a look at the start list, and could only recognise about 1 in 10 at best.

Chuffed for G, the two chasers may now have learned it's better to plough on than get drawn into a cat and mouse fight for silver over bronze. Real shame to see the Aussies get humped :D Brave effort by PK and a shame he couldn't hold onto the 3 that passed him as he managed to do with the next group. There must have been a point after 2 or 3 laps where he thought 's**t no-one's coming across to help'.

Stupid ride of the day goes to Caleb Ewan for continuing to try to bridge solo with two team mates just behind. Poor show by England really other than Thwaites, Russ Downing from a domestic continental level team their second best rider. What's the point of Andy Fenn? Not a bad effort by young Scott Davies, still only 18 and a first year senior and was in the 'peloton' right to the end. Good reward after mechanical issues in the TT, a real 'one to watch'.

    And your point is?
  • On Sauchiehall Street when it was pi$$ing it down we were screaming 'come in Pete dig deep!!!' on his final leading lap he just managed to say 'oh fuxk'. The lad was at the limit. The rain was just brutal.

Wales the only nation with more than 2 finishers. Scott Davies managed 10th out of the 12 finishers that included 8 riders from Pro Tour teams plus one who has previously. On old clubmate of mine has been riding with him for a few years now and been telling us all he's a real prospect.

I'm impressed that he hung in after getting caught and gained 8th place. There's a few others who appeared to turn up out of necessity and do the bare minimum.

Ok it might have been 11 days of Chippers, but it was a huge amount of fun.

Looks like Downey was undone by officials
No way in this world would Millar have been pulled under the same circumstances.

    http://www.stickybottle.com/races-resul ... -top-ride/

However, when the first 12 riders went through the start finish area for the last lap, the officials closed the course.
And when Downey arrived to start his last lap, he was told he was going no further. He was just over 10 minutes back at that time.
But Caleb Ewan of Australia and David Millar of Scotland were only just ahead of him on the road, a fact that simply rubbed salt into Downey’s wounds on the cusp of rounding out what would have been one of the best displays by any rider in a Northern Ireland jersey.

I just became Commonwealth Champion! Fantastic team race, very proud and grateful to the English girls! Thank you for all your support :)

No mention of Pooley whose contribution was easily better than that of the whole rest of the team put together.

If anyone finds some good photos of the two RRs please post up, thanks.

This guy is as tough as they come. Racing for Africa. Respect. (races for Europcar since July, hence the helmet - look out for him).

  • I braved the rain and watched this from the corner of Byres Road and University Avenue. First time I've seen a proper bike race in the flesh. I can confirm that "Lil Pete" really is little.

Well she singled out Pooley in a few newspaper interviews I've seen (although she also made some backhanded compliment along the lines of she's had some stick for her tactics on the road but got it right today).

Am I the only person who doesn't like Armistead? Really wish Pooley had won.

Not sure I dislike her as such, just not very keen on her. But definitely wish Pooley had won.

    Enjoyable viewing from the roadside.

Worthy winners in Armitstead and Thomas - the overall field might have been mixed in ability but the course is tough and there were was enough big hitters to make it a tough race. Was great to see riders from the likes of Malawi, Botswana, Kenya, Jamaica, Uganda, Rwanda etc too. Was impressed with the Namibians, not just Dan Craven but they had another rider in the main group until late on and another in the 2nd group until they got pulled.

Special mention to Katie Archibald - bronze in the points race, 4th in the individual pursuit and scratch, 5th in the time trial and 7th in the road race. Still a raw talent (if you can still call a world champion a raw talent as she's already achieved more than most will do) but a good all rounder in the making.

seeing it is the friendly games - couldn't some handicapping system be used. What is the point of coming from Belize, Sri Lanka etc to be dropped on the first lap by WT riders with apparently unlimited resources

No you're not the only one. I'm not sure what it is but I'm not a fan. She doesn't often come across well in interviews etc...
