Just watched this.
Was ok - not quite sure why everyone was going so bonkers about it.
Froome needs to attack from a place in the group other than the front.
Pleased VdB is back.0 -
Exciting stage that but can't help thinking it was fairly brainless tactically by Froome. OK he was strongest on the day but it was quite conceivable Bertie would suck his wheel then attack and get a few seconds. Thomas and Nieve looking in good form but Porte will be a liability if he doesn't sort himself out soon. Good to see Wilco holding on to his Giro form and VDB back in contention. Yates also looks like he could become the real deal. Can the rest of the week match today?0

Just watched last 5kms - thanks for posting Frenchie
Foaming at the mouth at the prospect of these two going head to head this week and in July0 -

Just shows, you don't need stupidly steep climbs to promote exciting racing.
Never a truer word spoken there Iain. I've just watched the last 5km of that race and it was brilliant. Good to see Van den Broeck and Keldeman trying to mix it up. Froome must surely have emptied the tank there, how many attacks did he make and how many breaks did he cover?
My feeling is that Contador only did as much as necessary to stay in touch. I think he has a better racing brain and I think he'll be better later in the week. Great racing chapeau to all for superb entertainment.0 -

because he wanted to prove a point. It wasn't just about winning the stage. You've watched too many cycling races if you think it was just about that It was about making a statement to Contador about who was the strongest. "c'mon pistolboy, let's see what you've got in that there holster."Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -
What else could Froome have done? Let Wilco and/or Talansky ride away?0

I think you are right but perhaps not just to Contador but by a way of making the statement that a Plan B isn't necessary for the TdF. Great stage today!0 -

Nope. I was thinking more the initial 500m out of the saddle blast, that left him being the one who was going to have ride from the front the rest of the way. As Rick said above he needed to drop back a bit and then attack, Bertie was watching him too closely. It was worth a go but then sustaining it with Contador glued to him was a bit silly unless they were both going to work to lose all the others.0 -

Also remember that cyclists spend their working day breathing deeply while sitting behind a motorcade. And do things like motorpacing.Twitter: @RichN950 -
Episode of forum induced déjà vu.
Talansky and Kelderman, whether they were trying to get ahead of inevitable attacks or not, did a lot to make that a much more interesting stage. Every time Froome was forced to defend his jersey he had a go at unhitching Contador. Wonder if he'll pay for the willy waving....a rare 100% loyal Pro Race poster. A poster boy for the community.0 -

Hiding in plain sight ThomThom, hiding in plain sight.
No you're right people are ridiculous.Correlation is not causation.0 -

I'll have to see if the stage is on Cycle Torrents. Work got in the way today sadly.0

What a great stage. Not just Froome and Contador either, all of the front boys did well, Keldo was excellent, and great to see Yates come in 8th.
The Tour could be a goodie.0 -
Reichenbach "falls" to 9th place in the stage !!! sorry that was bad 8)
Great to see my fav race after the Giro but that clown Carlton Kirby talks some shyte and that over the top screaming is cringeworthy.0 -
Oh, here we go again. So apparently Alberto had issues with his saddle..
Danish bacon and pastry to each and everyone in here if Alberto in one time of his career actually acknowledge he was beaten fair and square.
There's aaaaalways something. Every time. Never fails.0 -
Will be interesting to see if Porte rides himself out of a Tour place this week. What then Sky?0

How far was he from CF at the finish?0 -

Kennaugh or Henao.
Wiggins was never in contention for Porte's place. He's supposedly put on weight since California, so could only have been hoping for a flatland, cobbles, low slopes, TT sort of role.
Porte will be there though. They just may not trust him with the most important role on stage 1.0 -

Is that a genuine question? Seriously, it's not always easy to tell...We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

Froome looks set to further underline his Tour prospects and sway over team selection, at the same time as the team looks even more in need of Wiggins. Who knows....0 -

It's unfair to expect Wiggo to be a mere engine while Froome lords it over Contador, Nibali, Valverde etc. When your peak performance was taking (some) of these guys all the way, how can you muster the motivation to empty the tank 10km out. I doubt he was ever in contention for a mountains role.
There's also no reason why Nieve can't do a great job. Credible top 10 Plan B, too. No team has a serious podium B-side....a rare 100% loyal Pro Race poster. A poster boy for the community.0
