I just had to Google this! Not one of those Mr Slog.jimothy78 wrote:So does the little hole at the bottom show some sort of scale or numbers as the threaded part is screwed in and out?
The small holes are screw holes so don't relate to the object's use.
Here are a few more shots.

Is it a sheep's butt plug?"Arran, you are like the Tony Benn of smut. You have never diluted your depravity and always stand by your beliefs. You have my respect sir and your wife my pity"

Some sort of gap gauge?0

Does it hold a sample of some sort so that you can polish it. The hole is around the size of an embedded metallurgy specimen.
edit:- or is it the mould for the above?
The older I get, the better I was.0 -
Sample. Getting slightly warmer! But this object doesn't concern polishing or metallurgy.
Gap gauge is warm too.
Sheep! Pretty sure this is sheep free - although you never know these days :shock:natrix wrote:metronome wrote:Why try and get the middle out of a £2?
Because it's there! Whenever I have one in my hand I try to pop the middle bit out......
WIll try this. Hopefully it won't become a small obsession. I can't spend a 20p without checking to see if it has a date. Grhhh.tick - tick - tick0 -

Do you mean the thing that for slices plant samples for microscope slides?? 'cos if so you are too late matey, I've guessed that already
you mean as in...Capt Slog wrote:does it hold something from which thin slices are removed?
But if that's what it turns out to be Natrix, please post a picture.

It is indeed a microtome!
The item which is to be studied is held in place with wax or pith (maybe something else nowadays?) and a very thin slice is cut off exposing a cross section. This can then be placed on a microscope slide and studied.
30 seconds in to this clip shows an example: http://www.britishpathe.com/video/secti ... athematics
This microtone belonged to my Granddad. There's a rather nice matching microscope amongst other things.
Over to Mr Slog or Mr Natrix ?tick - tick - tick0 -
I think they use epoxy or similar these days to embed the sample. I did some silicon pieces in a strange resin mix the other week for someone else to put in the microtome, but I've never actually seen it working.
Over to you Natrix.
