That pin we can sticking out at the bottom left of the pic.
Is that the hinge coming loose or is it a release for the lid?
The older I get, the better I was.0 -
it is a locking pin, it slides out a couple of cm to allow the lid to hinge open - i kindly extended it a bit to make it more visible
no one close on the contents yetmy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -
can you show it open with the contents removed?
Is it a nice set of compasses/pencils/pens? (my father - sailer/diver/pilot had something like that)0 -
yep, set of drawing instruments, made by jakar, it's my set from ye olde daysmy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0

I think it's Coriordan's go.
Does that mean he was correct.
@coiriordan: Did V68 get his chainset? Is it a compact 28/36, cos' he's a bit feeble at the moment.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
He got the chainset. It's a proper double
Don't worry though, it's for his son
I was correct. The "yep" in sun gods reply was the giveaway. Now to think of a random object.0 -
It's about 1-1.5ft long and 3 inches in diameter.0 -
Is it some sort of shock absorber for a rope? So rather than suddenly snap taught it will soften the blow. Probably sailing related.
Thanks for the chainset, just need to work out what length BB I need. Don't worry Piña as stated it's for a young child so a proper double is no problem as he is much stronger than me.0 -
Fairly sure it's a mooring spring, if so Veronese68 has nailed what it's used for0
-
Yep it's a mooring spring.
Veronese was first with function, jack93 first with name.
Id say jack gets it, as it does have a specific use in mooring boats.

Is it like a quick nut or something?
It has a bolt which rather than being threaded, has a single groove round the tip. This snaps into that groove.
Never seen one that big tho0 -

-
It's a C shaped spring clip or a circlip or retaining ring.
The largest one I've seen is about 5mm diameter tho.0 -
