I had a brain wave on Monday, get up early, get a couple of choccy croissants and a juice, and stop somewhere on the South Downs for brekkie before continuing on to work.

This is heading up Sopers Lane or the Concrete Road, on the side of Steyning Bostal.

A couple of poppies with Steyning Bowl in the background.

Looking south, the coast is over the horizon.

    Just about at the top.

Going up the east side of Cissbury Ring, steeper and more technical than the usual route.

This is the west side of Cissbury. The grass was sodden so I had to find a bench for my breakfast, and this was the first. Couldn't really get behind it to get a snap of the food in the foreground and the view in the background, so -

Destination work is pretty much straight on, over the horizon and off the Downs, but I was heading to the left to an easy crossing of the A24 and then a bumpy bridleway climb up Rogers Lane.

This is close to the South Downs Way at Sullington, looking south, so Worthing and the coastal strip is down there in the early morning haze. I was only about 20 minutes from work here, but had 40, so headed down the track in front. I thought I knew where it would take me and that I had enough time, so off I went.

The detour was 3 sides of a square, although two of the sides were a bit bigger than I remembered so it was now time to get a wriggle on. This is looking back on the second leg of the square, that was a tasty downhill I want to revisit going in the opposite direction some time.

Again looking south, Harrow Hill blocking the view of Long Furlong.

Last bit of bridelway runs across a very bumpy field, with serious lumps of flint strewn all around.

Macro mode on my phone, it's hard to get it all in focus, especially when the breeze is blowing gently. This stuff ensured my shoes and socks were absolutely sopping by the time I got to work.

Superb morning. What does that come to in distance / time riding / start and finish times!?

Makes for a good start to the day!
Sometimes a bit cold though so I've switched to starting work early and getting out on the bike in the afternoon. Flexi-time is brilliant!

I am not sure. You have no chance.

Would love flexitime! It was 24km, 1 hr 45 and 600 m of climbing. Taking pics adds quite a bit of time that you don't factor in. I've been commuting this way once or twice a week for over 9 years, it still makes me stop and stare even now.
When I stopped for my brekkie, these two gorgeous German Shepherds came over and started sniffing around. I tried not to be like Jim in Friday Night Dinner, showing no fear! :*

Okay, obviously harder than I thought.
Here are 2 photos that every tourist to the area will take.

Sadly the Crannog on Loch Tay (top pic) was destroyed by fire around 12th June. Not sure if they plan to rebuild it. Remember visiting a few years back.

My bike is not in the pics, but a wonderful 40+ mile ride in Skye today.
Struan to Portree on a quiet single track road in particular was amazing!
