Agree with this, I used to listen to Kirby with no real issues, and even preferred him to that chap with the nasal voice (Declan Quigley?) - not sure who he is, haven't heard him for a while.

Having heard Hatch for a prolonged stint, I now realise what a quality cycling commentator is, and my heart sank watching the Dauphine yesterday when I realised who was on the microphone.

Who was the main commentator on the Californian tour?
    I quite liked him too.

California was Declan Quigley (the irish chap).

The nasal commenator I'd only be guessing at but if you're saying it's a while since you heard him, that may well be David Harmon. He has been retired from Eurosport commentary as of May 2013.

Ultimately for the Kirby haters the reality is that he's #1 and will do the main stage race events bar some of the Italian races as he generally works elsewhere for them, freeing up a slot for Hatch etc on the biggies. Looking at the pattern over recent years, he also does not do all the monuments - Milan-Sanremo and Il Lombardia go to the 3rd choice commentators, with Hatch getting Liege and Roubaix. The only Monument Kirby does is Flanders.

Here's a breakdown of who does what in the biggest 8 races.

Would also add that anyone watching Eurosport's coverage of these races would think Sean Kelly was never off but the only race he does on top of this tends to be Paris-Nice (with Hatch as Kirby is off doing Tirreno usually).

    @argyllfler,

Any idea what happened with the mixed up commentary yesterday?

Didn't see much of the stage unfortunately as Sky's planner buggered up and I watched bits on the Player - what happened? Did hear about the wrong language earlier the week?

It seemed as though they were swapping back and forth between CK/MS and some other chap whose voice I didn't know. It was as though they had a backup feed, never had that happen on ES player before.
  • I can't be arsed reading all of this thread but I can confirm, having tuned into the CdD for the first time today, that it's impossible to listen to him for more than five minutes without wanting to launch the laptop through the window. He's a wittering imbecile. End of story.

    It was Ant McCrossan.

Just watched the highlights while on the turbo in the garage. I actually enjoyed his wittering as a result.

He was on fire in the final stages. A win for the 1930's art movement is a line he must have been dreaming about saying.

Thanks, Declan is one I like then, but a subsequent poster has popped up the name. Ant Mccrossan.
Nasal may well be wrong, but the mans voice grates on me, plus too much forced enthusiasm for me.

    How old is Kirby?
He reminds me of a Smashy or nicey type character.

Yeah McCrossan I can really take or leave, the same with his brother Marty MacDonald-Mccrossan. McCrossan is rarely on Eurosport these days unless it's domestic British cycling. If he bled through I can only assume he was doing some sort of host broadcasting for ASO.

Kirby is mid to late 50s.

Yes he does. You can also hear him doing the MCing at the start / finish of the RCS-owned (mainly Italian) races.

He's reaching new depths of idiocy with the pathetic word links he's churning out at the moment.

Utter rubbish like this: "The wind has picked up, but will it be a breeze for Kennaugh, or will he blow, maybe he'll sail along, causing a storm, hoping he reaches Porte, who harbours a desire to win today, but has that ship already sailed".

How does he get away with this appalling drivel, surely none of the decision makers at Eurosport can listen to his turgid shit and think he's doing a decent job.

I've never heard any other sports commentators as poor as Carlton the Moron. He's the sort of idiotic character that The Fast Show would have invented.

Agreed, like a self fulfilling parody if such a thing can exist.

    Yup, ITV 4.
The great thing is that during the mega coverage of the TDF, everybody only has to endure Kirby during their ad breaks. :)

Maybe there was a mix up when the personnel department sent out the letter offering him the job, somewhere there is a cycling expert presenting a programme on cheese and wine.

See I bet if he was commentating on something to do with wine there would be sommeliers lobbing wine glasses at their screens in frustration too...

I think the events that Eurosport send people on site to stands at:

    Paris-Nice
    Paris-Roubaix
    Giro (this year anyway)
Tour of Turkey (in previous years)
    Tour de France
    Tour de Suisse

I wouldn't swear that they send people to the British events either.

D'you think CK dopes? It's the best way to take this thread out to 200+ pages.

    Interesting side note.
Declan Quigley and Brian Smith are doing the Eurosport commentary for their delayed, "as live" coverage of TdS.

Meanwhile Sport1+ Germany are showing the race live, ad break free, but in English, with the same commentators.

It's live on ES player as well, though frustratingly I tuned in just as it was finishing and rewound to 10km to go but the feed switched off within the last km.... :x

    That was Kirby's fault.

Maybe I am just noticing other commentators more (probably because their commentary is usually so much better), but it does seem that CK isn't as prevalent as he used to be? Route du Sud commentary pretty good today (not CK).

Presuambly he's doing le man, which is a big ol' shift.
