I quite like him, his gaffes and one liners liven up some pretty dull stages.

Liked today's line about the Laser dinghy "a bit more than a surf board, a bit less than the Royal Yacht Brittania!"

The line about Sicilians filling people's boots with concrete re: Nibali while stereotypically amusing could have stayed unsaid.

Given you recently referred to women cyclists as "front bums" I think I'll ignore your opinion on humour.

(I don't have any problem with the Nibali comment, I just don't think it's funny - mostly because nothing that comes out of Kirby's mouth is funny. He spends the next 5 minutes laughing at whatever he's just said).

This is with Nibali, he's always making some stereotypical Sicilian, mafia-related remark - evil stares etc... I don't personally have issue with it but it's the same old thing.
  • Tony Gibb does seem clued in..very much so..and has the ability to not speak if there nothing needs saying...plus he has just opened a wicked bike shop in the North of Sheffield..top man!!

I have to say that he did a more than decent job today, under difficult circumstances.
Not one note of flippancy, just somber and respectful throughout.
The Eurosport contribution struck the right chord as well; with a montage to both open and as a postscript.

didn't hear this but have to say well done CK. Not fair to moan when he's bad without praising him for some decent work.

Announcements from Eurosport regarding Giro and Tour. New 1 hour Giro highlights show fronted by Jonathan Edwards. Giro hour highlights will also be shown on free to air Quest. In the list of presenters mentioned CK's name is missing (or I haven't read it properly).

CK doesn't do the Giro usually.

Rob Hatch and Sean Kelly are doing the Giro. Hatch also says he will be part of a bigger commentary team for the Tour.

Hatch & Kelly for the Giro. I asked Hatch if he was doing the Tour and he confirmed he'll be part of a larger commentary team. I suggested he holds on to the mic tightly....

    EDIT - what Rich said

Sending carlton back to the cave?

He wasn't all that bad when he was spitting out weird facts about the stage on the slower days of the race as the third wheel.

In fact, some of the analysis they put out was quite interesting.

Remember one looking at the average gradients of the mountain stages of each stage, and they incrementally got steeper as the Tour went on.

He was actually very good in that role. Just as Harmon was dozing off Kirby would pop up with a tall tale about how he once won a giraffe playing canasta with the Aga Khan.

Maybe that sums him up. He can come up with an amusing tale for a few ins but cant commentate for an hour or more

The problem is more that if he's not kept in check the whole commentary becomes a monologue of Kirby's stupid stories.

Given they will be televising the entire race for the first time, this year, it's a fair bet that Kirby won't be in the cave, but the commentary box.
My guess is that will be JHB's job again.

So, they bought in Edwards and paid off Ashley and Juan Arrow?
A bit more pro, but a lot less insight.

Those two are still involved. It seems Eurosport are really beefing* up their coverage this year, which can only be a good thing.

    Here's their own press release: http://www.eurosport.co.uk/cycling/giro ... l#uk-tw-po

It will be like the last few Paris-Roubaix commentaries I guess - 2 commentators and a summariser paired up - at P-N we had Hatch, Quigley and Kelly doing that - at one stage it was Hatch and Quigley together.

which confused the hell out of me, because I hadnt realised they were doing that and went out the room to get a drink when one of the changes happened and came back and thought I was watching a repeat or something

at least we still get Ashley and Juan

So Ashley and Juan stay or have gone? I like the way when Juan corners a rider for a word you sense they'd rather not but when they see it's Flech, crack a smile and open up.

House has been bumped down the pecking order...

Just crossed my mind how glad I am with Jungels doing so well that Kirby isn't commentating on the Giro.

I think I would have reached peak Mr Bojangles and exploded.

Pretty sure Eurosport used CK's commentary on the rest day highlights package which seemed odd. It was dreadful.

His commentary for the final few km of Saturday's stage was painful. I actually felt a little embarrassed for some reason.
  • CK and Dan Lloyd are the Giro commentators on the channel I'm watching here in the UAE (OSN Sport). I think they make a pretty good partnership TBH.

Being from Brum, that probably explains why I miss him. :D

I do wonder who the pundits prefer to work with, noticed Mr Kelly has been missing quite a bit during transmission of the Giro.
