CK and Dan Lloyd are the Giro commentators on the channel I'm watching here in the UAE (OSN Sport). I think they make a pretty good partnership TBH.
I caught some of that, could tell straight away as Kirby spent most of the last 3k screaming incoherently about motos being too close to the riders rather than talking about the race.

    He's such a tit.

Pretty sure Eurosport used CK's commentary on the rest day highlights package which seemed odd. It was dreadful.

It was a job-lot package of highlights they bought. Easier than sitting down to edit all those stages themselves!

    Anyone missing Kirby...

I've genuinely started to hate him just off youtube videos of this Giro when he goes mental and just starts stating things that are blatantly untrue. Like Quintana having to chase an attack back on his own, when Amador is clearly pacing him back within 10 seconds etc etc.

I'd be willing to pay to send him into retirement.

Flecha is absolutely terrible as an interviewer. His post-race pieces with riders are so cringeworthy.

Agree with that, that's when I can understand him.

On the plus side, Jonathan Edwards and Brian Smith have been excellent, hope they do the TdF.

I personally think the J.Edwards and Brian Smith thing has worked really well.I'm not into rubbishing CK, but they have been very slick...J.Edwards hasn't really put a foot wrong..professional....

I really enjoyed the Eurosport Giro coverage.

Had to watch Tuesdays stage highlights on YouTube, Kirby The Moron was on the mic and it was cringeworthy. Shouting at the top of his voice like an absolute bellend.

Made me so glad it was the only time during the 3 weeks that I'd had to listen to him.

Yes, I'd agree with all that. I think Eurosport have done really well this Giro; I was really sceptical about having Jonathan Edwards but he's been really good. Brian Smith has contributed really well, some nice cameos from Steve Cummings, Sean Kelly has been Sean Kelly, and think Rob Hatch has been great.

And contrary to some comments above, I like Flecha doing his interviews. He adds a nice euro touch, he has empathy with the riders having done the job and he brings honest enthusiasm.

All in all, I think the coverage and presentation has been excellent.
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

And he will undoubtedly get better. I reckon someone tuning in for the first time or who doesn't know a lot about cycling wouldn't have had a clue that it was his first attempt. They just have to try and keep Kirby the Muppet away from their coverage now.

I must admit my initial reaction was "WTF does Jonathan Edwards know about cycling", but he did fine. I still regard Gary Imlach as "the man" in that particular role though.

Agree with this, I used to listen to Kirby with no real issues, and even preferred him to that chap with the nasal voice (Declan Quigley?) - not sure who he is, haven't heard him for a while.

Having heard Hatch for a prolonged stint, I now realise what a quality cycling commentator is, and my heart sank watching the Dauphine yesterday when I realised who was on the microphone.

Who was the main commentator on the Californian tour?
    I quite liked him too.

Having said that, I do like the commentary from the GCN crew, perhaps because I relate them them and their enthusiasm and of course to come degree their knowledge of the sport.

Also thought Edwards did a great job on the Giro, quality presenter, and will get better and more knowledgable as time goes on imho.

As far as knowledgable sidekicks go, Magnus Backstedt is my favourite.

This year, for the first time, I may even (Depending on who is commentating!) drop ITV4 and switch to Eurosport for their TDF coverage - especially if they keep the same lineup as they had for the Giro.

    My PTP for Kirby.
Today's commentary will consist of a jokey intro, followed by a half hour of a who's who in the peloton that stands the remotest chance of winning the stage. Next up will be some non cycling related waffle about God knows what, possibly punctuated by a hysterical cry for any motorbike that catches his eye, to get out of the way.
Finally, everything will hit a screeching crescendo, as the riders speed up into the no doubt dangerous, final run in.

Let's pray to whoever we pray to that there will be no roundabouts on the run-in, virtually impossible to negotiate a roundabout by bicycle in CK's world.

Nice to hear him tipping "Si Clarke" for a possible win yesterday, and then later acknowledging that "Si" doesn't like being called "Si", but prefers "Simon". Be interested to see if CK manages to remember that.

Does anybody know who ES UK commentators are for the TdF? Please don't say CK, please....

    It is indeed CK.

I'm pretty pleased. The Giro commentary was fine and all that, but needed that bit of misinformation/humour that only the man himself can bring.

I've heard excellent things about Robbie McEwen so if you can nab an Ozzie stream that might be a good shout.

Kirby's picks could generally be considered "rank outsiders" at best.

Perhaps we should play a game where we enter Kirby's first pick into PTP and see how shockingly he does...

Matthew Keenan and Robbie McEwen are the normal duo in Oz. A more than decent pairing and McEwen gives great insight and commentary. I groan whenever the Oz commentary are forced to hand over to Liggett and Sherwin. Also, no disrespect intended but I cannot believe Carlton Kirby can be as woeful as Liggett and Sherwin now are.

I had my first exposure to him yesterday. Over-riding impression was of a man in a booth in a cardigan watching the TV monitor with a cup of horlicks in his hand. I did find some of the Giro commentary a little OTT from time to time with Hatch suggesting something earth shattering which turned into nothing at all. And then again. And then again.

    But I'm odd like that.

Yeah, I did get that - he kept talking about "attacks" which went nowhere. Still, it's his job to make it sound as exciting as possible and he's a lot less annoying than Carlton "motormouth" Kirby

Done! Retrospectively added for yesterday (Si Clarke) and today (Gerro). Might not be around tomorrow to record his first pick. Did anyone catch his GC pick?

At the moment CK is neck and neck with me in PTP, only difference is that he has made picks and I haven't. Think my strategy might win.

Edited: forgot to mention if anyone spotted his GC pick

I think they're having a wider team including Hatch (& maybe Quigley?), as they're showing the race in its entirety.

I think we might have a new game Carlton PTP: I have a strong feeling that CK will continue picking Australians, and today might be another day for 'Gerro'. Probably too easy, flat stage it would always be Turbo Durbo, lumpy Bling, sprint Si Clarke and everything else Gerro.

to be fair to CK I think he said "Si Clarke could be a good shout" - but he says that every day, even when Clarke is not riding. His "pick" was Ariel Maximiliano Richeze.

I thought he wasn't too bad on Sunday - but was back to normal dreadfulness yesterday
