I seem to have bypassed this look on the way up to my current pro-level....

I just don't seem to get cold feet, unless it's both wet and freezing.

In answer to the original question:

    Yes.

There is now a gentleman cycling in to my village in the morning on a Dutch bike in a suit. It was 2C yesterday and 3C this morning, and he's there in a grey suit and smart shoes. He's also TOTALLY oblivious to the chaos behind him as he weaves around the road without a care in the world. It's kind of fascinating in a "watching a man play with tigers" kind of way.

  • On the plus side, there also seems to have been an exponential growth in the number of hot, lycra-clad ladies jogging along the Embankment, although that also brings its own dangers.

Indeed, I also go alongside and then through Clapham Common, which is also fraught with danger

Had a Boris Bike Nodder call me a stupid fcker for stopping at a zebra crossing today - he had turned off (without looking) before I could ask him what his problem was - other than the obvious.

Embankment was terrible - only consolation was the above-mentioned lycra clad joggers

I don't miss noddergeddon on Embankment. I do miss a guaranteed tailwind at least one way. Better than the the eternal crosswind of the SE / NW Axis.

  • Are we in a second phase of this? Choppers everywhere and the only explanation is 1 June and a new wave having dusted off the bikes over half term?
If I know you, and I like you, you can borrow my bike box for £30 a week. PM for details.

I thought the same this morning, on my semi rural commute I see maybe 2 others; this morning about 20, most of whom were wearing boil in a bag tops and longs

I am inclined to agree. I'm also seeing the build up earlier in my ride too: usually, things are pretty quiet through Kingston, with a slow build up through Richmond Park, more on the Lower Richmond Road, until past Putney Bridge, it's catastrophic.

This morning, it was two deep in the bike box at Laithwaites on the Portsmouth Road in Kingston, with a full on Choppeleton by the time I got to Richmond Park. There was I hoping that the threat of rain this afternoon was going to put them off. Wishful thinking.

I saw a friend of mine who's a coach driver at a BBQ yesterday, and he was ranting on about cycling standards. Sadly, I agreed with much of what he had to say. The amount of drafting, cycling through zebra crossings as people are crossing, ignoring red lights, undertaking lorries and coaches as they are turning left etc has got to epidemic levels amongst our hi-viz clad friends.

undoubtedly, I was just planning an overtake of one who was somehow threading a route between kerb and edge of road painted white line, to fit in with the current wave of traffic released from a set of traffic lights, and the guy shoulder checked and then did a full on emergency stop without any further hint or warning or signal.

that woke me up abit, I was so shocked I didnt even swear, though I might have passed some friendly advice that if he wanted cyclists to overtake him, as that was his reasoning apparently for stopping in such a hurry, "to just carry on pedalling" next time

So normally, at this time of year, when the nights draw in, it's cold and dark in the morning, and we've had our first wet and blustery weather, the nodders and choppers magically melt away like a snowman in the rain.

So what happened? They're still here! It's just as busy now as it was in the height of Summer! Yesterday evening's commute was a full on wheelsuckfest, and this morning there was so much hi-viz about that for a moment, I thought I was at a bin man convention.

I'm waiting for the clock change before determining whether or not they are going to hibernate this year.
  • Maybe they won't hibernate this year.

I've noticed the same thing with hedgehogs, they get confused with the lack of definition between the seasons and therefore the urge to hibernate does not kick in.

They share a lack of road-awareness with hedgehogs as well - you might be on to something there.
  • According to the Telegraph, Tuesdays are meant to be the days on which the most people cycle into work (inc. nodders).........& based on what I saw today, I think this is true....

So many things to watch out for when cycling.....HGVs, pot holes, road works, cars & nodders.....Lord help us!

yes I thought cycling home today it was surprisingly busy still, though our bike park at work was half empty this morning, but I dont think its quite cold & dark enough, the past week has been pretty warm for October, and today was probably the first day it didnt get into double digit temperatures with the wind chill all day.

if it stays like this another week, + clock change + school half term I reckon it will be deserted again :)

Well, the number of tragically-ridden tourist-carrying Boris bikes has diminished; however, last night had to deal with the new menace: unlit young females on cr*ppy single-speeds.

And don't even start me on those stupid chrome/gold skating helmets they all seem to be wearing

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Nope! We're not giving up. With record low temperatures predicted this winter, we might even outlast you, BR lot!
  • And don't even start me on those stupid chrome/gold skating helmets they all seem to be wearing

    This my new red rag.
There was a bloke last night on High St Ken wearing one with a stripe down the middle, and a light affixed to the back, trying to ride quickly.
Wanted to say, 'It's not Starlight Express mate' as I passed.
But who knows... maybe it IS... ooo-eee-ooo.

Mamils have more blubber than your typical racing snake; thus they may actually be better suited to the colder weather.

I'm looking forward to having the roads to myself a little bit too...

I don't mind the MAMIL's so much, at least they follow most of the rules.

I just saw a chopper on a Cervelo S5 - all the usual attributes; no shoulderchecks, squeezed through to wait at front of lights and then wobbled away, general lack of awareness coupled with zero speed - but on one of the most beautiful bikes known to man. I can only hope it was a Chinese/Indonesian knock-off
