I don't understand why people think Martin is a dead cert for the record. His TT position is very narrow (elbow placement) which won't be possible/very difficult on the track (because of the banking forces). Just look at teh arm placement of the pursuit riders. That means his CdA will likely be higher, I expect. He's also not ridden fixed much at all, so he might not get on well with it.
My money would be on Wiggins, but the real point is that it is advance to the one who tries it first. This is because the follow rider will know exactly how much power he needs, and unless he's way over, there'll be a risk of failure....0 -
But Wiggins hasn't had the bottle to stick his head above the parapit yet, has he.
Jens isn't one of the best testers but he had the legs and pig-headedness to make a job of it, and retires in style. No doubt David Millar is deciding how bad his shoes for the WC should look.Life is unfair, kill yourself or get over it.0 -

Throw in a charity donations element and you have big exposure for both matt and his sponsorsand a lot of egg on the face of the UCI. Admittedly it won't go in the record books but it wouldn't be too costly to Matt's training schedule I wouldn't have thought?
He needs to get it in before Wiggins/Canc/ martin batters that and does a mid 53.
I'd love to see this and I'd wager he'd go futher than Jens.
OK so it wouldn't be official - but Sosenkas was and he did nothing further of note apart from being busted for drugs.
Its ridiculous that people are so excited about 21st century fully aero Jens beating a bloke on a 1960s style bike.0 -
It's more about what it will lead to I think. Now the UCI has (thankfully) sorted its act out, a lot more people should be able to try it.
I thought Jens rode very smoothly, of course his record will be smashed when Fabus gives it a try but its a fitting climax to his carrer and he's well loved by the fans. Good on him!0 -

A few amateurs did attempt the hour without the UCI blessing, but generally they fell short by a long way. Just recently in Italy a guy announced his attempt and a small crowd gathered at the velodrome... I think he did 40 Km or so, which is more than I would do, but a universe away from 50 Kmleft the forum March 20230 -

Our testing put Matt at well over 52km and around 52.5km. Attempting the hour record as a non approved superstar (JV, Wiggins, Tony Martin, Cancellara etc.) is basically impossible, it's just a show event. There's a discussion on the TT forum about it but the crux of it is the UCI don't want amateurs going for the hour and will (and have) put arbitrary rules in place to stop that from happening.

So to put it into perspective as there are 17 pages about the merits of these Hour Records.
Now until the UCI change the rules again or the Goalposts, then it looks like Jens has the latest record.

Any interviews with Jens worth reading?'Performance analysis and Froome not being clean was a media driven story. I haven’t heard one guy in the peloton say a negative thing about Froome, and I haven’t heard a single person in the peloton suggest Froome isn’t clean.' TSP0

With respect, the UCI rules may seem arbitrary, but they are there for a reason. Furthermore, there is nothing preventing ANY amateur from following all the rules and attempting the record. The UCI's insistence on record-attempters being a part of the bio-passport is a big hoop to jump through, but it is possible to achieve. I know you and the team around Matt were disappointed to find this was a requirement, but if Matt is serious about the attempt, he should have joined the passport program and had a go at the attempt once approved.
Furthermore, if he knows that his record attempt wouldn't hold up for very long, then he is (and always will be) eligible to go for the Master's record - without having to be a part of the passport and it's a record that's likely to stand for a much longer period of time.
If the goal was simply to be 'first' under the new rules, then that boat has sailed. But if the goal was to post up a time that might stand for a while or to see how he would stack up against the big boys, then there is nothing preventing Matt from going for the attempt at any time.0 -
Could set a masters record that exceeds the UCI record, I'd go for it quick.0

Absolutely, I don't think anyone can deny that having the biopassport as a requirement for the Hour, to make sure it doesn't get tainted with dopey riders is only a good thing. The problem was once we finally got the adjusted rules out of the UCI, not only was it still unclear as to whether you could use aerobars (!) but there was nothing in there about the passport.
It culminated in one of the sponsors at the UCI head office in Switzerland being told by the UCI that they wouldn't let MB attempt the record as they didn't want someone like him (ie. unknown amateur) breaking it. So whether the sponsors paid many thousands to get on the passport (6 month+ delay before it gets ratified), and regardless of the chance of someone doing 54km in those interim 6 months, there's every chance that they'd bring up a rule or some other delaying tactic to stop him having a go once the 6 months were up and the passport ratified. Making the sponsors understandably wary of starting the whole process in the first place, asking for thousands of Euros for the chance to have a go in half a year? Unlikely. MB's bike was also subject to different rules to JVs, we were told under no circumstances were brake/gear/cable holes etc. to be filled or covered (it was a road version of a Giant Trinity Advanced) but JVs bike (road version of a Trek Speed Concept) had carbon blended into the brake area to make it more aero.
A Masters record is a possibility but not something the sponsors were as keen about supporting as it doesn't create as much noise. Plus long season now!0 -
You could fill his holes in with carbon. The rules are the same for both bikes. And the rule has always been that you can't tape over holes. There has never been a restriction on adding carbon.0
-
Maybe I've missed this - but why wasnt the hour record reset to Boardmans distance of 52.270 ?
His bike looks modern, same size wheels, tribars but not superman position ?
Jens looks to have underperformed compared to that ?0 -
This one? I'm not sure the tube profiles meet the new standard?
Edit: the bars definitely don't meet the modern standard. Not sure about the saddle position either.I'm left handed, if that matters.0 -
