CAAD 10 with 105 for £950? http://bicyclerichmond.co.uk/collection ... 0-105-2013
A rather nice Ultegra-equipped carbon model from a proper manufacturer for under a grand there too: http://bicyclerichmond.co.uk/collection ... tegra-2013"Mummy Mummy, when will I grow up?"

I'm really enjoying this thread.
DDD is now fat, under the thumb, his prowess in the bedroom is on the wane and he's feeling old but he's just as irrational as ever.
Disc brakes on road bikes are the future. FACT! (Thought I'd slip into a posting style that he'd understand).
Tiagra is now 20 speed as is 105. Does DDD want 105 just so that he can say he has 105 or is he more concerned with saving a few grammes and having his gear cables under his bar tape. I doubt many people on this forum could actually feel the difference if they couldn't see what groupset a bike had.
I'm not a fan of aluminium (or carbon). Steel or Titanium for me from now on.
Having said all of that, I'd be looking at the Hoy if I wanted 105 alu and an old fashioned, out of date braking system.
And just to keep it light hearted, I give you a song from 1987 which should raise a chuckle (more likely from DDD's dad than from DDD himself).FCN 3: Raleigh Record Ace fixie-to be resurrected sometime in the future

Yes, having children is flipping hard. At 4.30am Ms DDD woke me up by screaming that my beautiful boy won't let her sleep. I'm now sitting up with a 2 yr old who won't sleep - I've plonked him in front of Thomas the Tank engine, it's too earlyfor anything else. I was shocked out of my sleep so brutally I've got tears in my eyes, and it took me 15mins to realise I was sitting in the living room watching Thomas.
I don't get much time (things like the school run and football on Sat morning) these days, so I'm reclaiming cycling - at the sacrifice of console gaming (but no loss there) - and I've set myself a target: 2 stone new bike. I don't want to go all the way to carbon this time, I want a really nice aluminum one that I feel comfortable riding to work and weekends. Plus I like aluminium. That said I accept that group sets have changed since I last looked (Ultegra SL) so I'll consider other options.
I sold the Kuota. I have no regrets, she went to a good home and I have some irrational logic for selling.
Greg, I've always loved that Cervelo
But I've got to lose 2 stone first.Food Chain number = 4

its funny how your priorities change once you have children, out go all your little pleasures "all" everything revolves around the nipper and eventually slowly but surely you get used to no sleep, no time for hobbies and forget you ever enjoyed such luxuries as computer games or watching a whole movie in one sitting.
Then all of a sudden they've grown up and now what they want is of course money for their games/hobbies and you or the partner to drive them everywhere and collect them and their mates later.
My advice to everyone regardless of whether or not you have children yet - call your parents and thank them for being so AWESOMERule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

Why not do this the right way, get any bike with 105 on, get a nice quality ally frame you can lust after, swap everything over and sell the 'as new' decentish frame on, the components are important but the frame really dictates how it rides. You may have to compromise on wheels for it....Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Why would you want to go back to aluminium if you've been used to carbon? I can understand wanting steel, but aluminium?
Why not just get yourself a robust steel commuter for the weightloss that you can keep as a workhorse for fitting a child seat/panniers to? That way when you've lost the weight and your wife lets you get a more nimble bike, it won't immediately be obsolete.
You've already broken the rules by getting rid of your Kuota, don't make the same mistake again. Embrace n+1.0 -
I was trying to help initially here DDD.
I looked for Canyon cyclescheme, and found a post where someone said they didn't do it. But that person bought a Cube Attempt and was very pleased. But the Attempt isn't around anymore. But the Agree looks nice. And it's sub £1000. It's Carbon, but still 105. With a bit of Ultegra. Anyway, I was trying to help, see...

It has an aluminium seatpost - and you round down these things. Like if it's Dura Ace chain but Sora group then really it's Sora. So this is an aluminium bike... see. That's some DDD thinking right there.0 -
Alu can be comfortable. My Condor Italia is very aluminium but more comfy than my steel genesis. It is all to do with the manufacture and quality. On the days when I take the Italia to work there is a significant difference in the smoothness of the ride, although for the commute the genesis is probably more fun- all down to the construction and geometry of the bike.
(Note- I haven't ridden a Carbon bike- that is going to be my mid life crisis bike when I hit 40 in 2017!)RIP commute...

Some manufacturers sell primarily through retail outlets (which have to add their markup to remain viable) and others selling primarily over the web. Some manufacturers have large marketing/sponsorship budgets, some don't. Given the huge variety in the way companies are doing business, price is quite a poor proxy for quality these days. Stipulating that a bike has to be expensive doesn't make an awful lot more sense than stipulating that it has to be made out of aluminium.
If you want to buy through an LBS in order to support the retailer, or because you think they offer a better service, that's fine. But it's misleading to claim the bike itself is inherently better, purely because you got it from a local retailer.Pannier, 120rpm.0 -

Think about the bigger picture.
You want to lose 2 stone.
You want to end up getting a bling carbon racer.
If you achieve this goal then your aluminium racer will be obsolete.
Future proof your current choice by getting an aluminium frame to be a work horse that will take full mudguards and panniers. Also, if you want to ride your bike in less than ideal conditions then you really do want disc brakes or face the prospect of buying new rims or wheels on a regular basis.
That way your current choice will not become obsolete and your future bling bike will not get dirty.
This is good advice, but possibly not the advice that you wish to read. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Having had all three (carbon, steel and aluminium) I can honestly say that I don't think any one is better than the other - certainly not at my level - its just that the qualities of each are different.TGOBT" wrote:If you want to buy through an LBS in order to support the retailer, or because you think they offer a better service, that's fine.
