Is this the cup winners cup people are talking about? If so, this has never been the forerunner to the Champions League and has never been the pinnacle of European football. There were three European Trophies, The European Champions Club Cup, The Uefa Cup and the Cup WInners Cup. The latter was scrapped in 1999 to be merged with the Uefa cup. The European Champions Club Cup became the Champions League in 1992/93.

As you quite rightly say there were three European trophies on offer and of the 3 the ECWC was the least prestigious. Not a bad trophy to win but as an honour nowhere near the kudos received for winning the European Cup. I suppose there's no embarrassment in a football fan not knowing that, calling it the forerunner to the CL however. lol: 0 -
