Riding without paying.

For me a GPS map is essential, done too many events where someone has kindly switched the signs to give us a longer ride than the official route.
it's a hard life if you don't weaken.0 -
I think the bottom line is, don't be a tool, if you choose to ride a sportive, then have some integrity and pay your way.I don't mean to brag, I don't mean to boast, but I'm intercontinental when I eat French toast...0

Well I'm glad you've cleared that up.
That will save anyone else from needing to have their own opinion.

For some but not all. Fair enough there may be changes nearer the time. But you should at least know the general route you'll be taking.0 -

Wot if the sportive takes place on the local rds u ride most days, why should u pay to ride them, as long as u dont use feedstations it is fine imo0

So ride on the roads just don't follow the course unless you have paid - see above about being a tool and having integrity.0 -
I also found this frustrating with the Wales Ride It! But I sent an e-mail to Dean Stacey who explained that they had not finalised the route but then posted up a map about 1 month beforehand, I must say it was a little vague but enough for me to recce a couple of the climbs.
The level of communication, route selection, service and value for money far exceeded frustration regarding availability of route information. I believe they post up the previous year's route when entry opens if the event has previously been run.0 -
Plus 4 for not being a tool and having some integrity ...0

Well thats fine then - obviously you ride the exact same route as the sportive takes for the whole route every week!!
There's a world of difference between riding a few miles on the same route by chance, and riding the whole 50 to 100+ mile route (which anyone with sense would take as read that this thread was about!) so dont be so pedantic.0 -
I actually found that one of my local loops, that I often do follows the exact same route as a local Audax for about 20 miles - but IN REVERSE...!
Sometimes if you find a good set of roads, others find it too and plan a Sportive on it.
I am sure your local loop wouldnt stick to the Sportive route exactly for the entire length though - that would be too much of a coincidence.
I would probably stay away if I knew there was a sportive running anyway though - find less crowded roads as if you are local you would have plenty of alternatives.
Just dont use their parking, facilities or anything else though otherwise you are just a git.0 -
Obviously its not all the same roads in one go, but like i said im not paying to ride roads i normally ride, plus i never use thier facilities, i know were all the local cafes are0

There you go then, the argument is about people that ride the entire route at the same time as the ride, use the facilities ext.Life isnt like a box of chocolates, its like a bag of pic n mix.0 -

I was chatting to a young lady on an MTB today who was out for a quiet ride around the bye ways of west cornwall and got surrounded by about 1000 other riders...0

issacforce wrote:Zardoz, why should i use different route, the have invaded my back yard, not being a tool u nobber, i suppose u have never ridden 100 yards on aroad used by a sportive eh, i never use feed stations just local cafes,as normal, and anyway thety r public roads and every tax payer pays fpr them and i will ride were i like, if u dont like ittough tittie,
Wow, someone gives a perfectly reasonable reply of just riding your normal route - however you want, and then you call him a 'nobber'. You really need to read what people are writing. Secondly you need to read what you are writing, at least try to write in understandable English.0 -

About 15 new events next year so we will hopefully get to somewhere near you!
Dean,
I notice there are now some provisional 2014 dates on your site. I assume these do not include the 15 new events you are talking about, as they seem to be mostly the same ones as 2013?0
