Working for me! Haven't gone off road yet but done a few km round town, lots of steps, kerbs, gravel, steep hills up down and can already tell I'm digging this setup. There's a noticeable gap where the 17t cog is missing but apart from that it's spot on. Using the whole of the cassette rather than just the 21-34t cogs (and occasionally the 11t for bombing it down the tarmac) that I was on the 2x10 setup.

Will properly test chain retention qualities next week and if it passes that I'll be very happy. Got an amazing amount of ground clearance now that's for sure

    EDIT : re-linked images

I need a small, lightweight bash to cover those unsightly bolt holes

How's that for a tiny chainring? And 0.5kg lighter than yesterday...

Seriously impressed with this chainring! Did one of the roughest of my local descents lastnight and it didn't miss a beat - quiet and secure with no chain device at all...pretty amazing. Couldn't actually believe the chain was still on when I reached the bottom. Narrow Wide rings going on the rest of the bikes for sure

    Looks good Felix!

What is the cassette setup you've got? I'm looking at going 1x10 at some point and like yourself it have to pedal up some steep climbs locally

11-40t (11-23t with 17t cog removed of an XT 11-34t cassette + the Absolute Black 28-40t adapter)

Had to go down to a 28t chainring to be sure of getting up the big climbs but I'm loving the setup so far. Like I say I went through one ridiculous rocky section and would've put money that the chain had dropped. Gonna try and mount the GoPro pointing at the chainring just to see how secure it really is. Impressed so far

I'm running an SLX cassette and I can't remove the 17t separately so I may invest in an XT cassette with a view to going 1x10

I bet the clutch mech helps too.. I've really noticed a reduction in noise on mine and I can use the bigger chainring on rocky descents and not drop a chain

On the topic of Votec bikes, I've noticed they've got some newer models out and they do look very temping for the price

You can remove the 11t on your SLX and get the AB 41mm lockring. Another way to do it

Yep. The holes aren't really noticeable

But if it was me I'd probably put on a bash as the holes may as well be used and it may save the chainring

Doubt I'll hit anything got about 0.5m ground clearance now!

Yeah, more just for aesthetics. New fork and XTR shifter is far more important

Just noticed from the photo how much clearance there is!
Oh well, a bash is a fairly cheap addition and that Ti bash thingy looks sweet!
Fox 36 up front would look nice

The standard Ti finish would look good against the black and tie in with the fork stantions.

A set of XT brakes for £100?...how could I resist, looks like the SLX are going back to their rightful home on the Rockhopper :)

Good deal aren't they. Makes XTR and Saint hard to justify at the moment at over double the cost.

Any thoughts on that bash ring?

£104 with delivery to France and coming from UK so they'll be the 'right' way round. Sweet.

Re. bashguard - those brakes have used up my monthly MTB budget so will have to wait. Absolute Black are apparently making a little bash for exactly this so I'll wait and see what they come up with.

How are you finding the cassette setup now after a few rides? Been looking at 11 speed for a new build but price jump is huge in comparison and I doubt the shift quality is that much better. Don't really.need the 40t where I am but good to have the option for the odd trip out.

It was CRC's already low price plus a £15 discount code (JULY15) that expired yesterday.

I'm currently waiting for him to send me a price inc shipping so I can pay for it!

I'll have to find some ti chainring bolts now though!
