The best GT I've ever owned

Not bad for 22 years old & still used for 40+ mile off road routes 8) , only changes are Tyres/chain/brake blocks, otherwise all original

Great looking retro machine 8) and with a bit of luck i'll own one some time in the future  ..

It would be great if you did find another but most i've seen on ebay have been to recent to be retro or incomplete ..

It just takes time, I'm happy to look at bikes that need a little restoration work & building. It took me over 1 year to find my last one

Theres a 91 avalanche with the same paint as yours on eBay that ive seen just now. It's in decent condition, just looks like a large frame.

I'd like to do something like that but atm i'm struggling to find a reasonable second hand shed as i've no where to store my currant bike as that's 5 miles away at my youngest daughters and not kept in ideal condtion at that but no choice really ..

But given the right opportunity i'd love a project and i really admire what you did with your last GT 8) ..

That's been on ebay for quite some time now. It would have to be a small/medium so I can ride it once I've got it working.

I was actually having a look at the IT1 today. Its such a lovely looking bike, that drive train system is interesting. Id sell my house before id sell that IT1! :)

    You haven't ridden one then...

Once you get over the novelty of the thing (which tbf does take a while) you realise it's far too complex (needlessly so) too many proprietary, not to mention rare, parts, it's ferociously heavy (48lbs+), crap geometry, (reeeeally high bb and a 69deg HA iirc) but the worst bit was the constantly moving chain. Great for carving up legs in a crash....

It rode like a monster truck though, in a good way :-)

Nope, never even so much as sat on a downhill bike. (infact ive only seen 2-3 downhill biks in the flesh before...)

48 pounds?!? No wonder it rides like a monster truck, its as heavy as one! Thats almost double the weight of my Chucker.

I was reading about the crap geometry bit, about how crap it was as you say. And iirc it was a 68 degree head angle ;) I was thinking about how hard to get spares would be for that too.

From what ive read from you and others, and the way it looks, it sort of reminds of one of those rare italian supercars that are renowned for being utter shite...but you still would want to have one :D

Your 24 inch GT looks nice too btw.

I finished this build a few weeks ago. The intention was to just learn about building and get something I can use to ride around in the roads locally, all with cheap or second hand parts.

GT Agressor Elite frame, Exotic Alu forks, quite pleads with it and will try to keep it for years and upgrade as I go. Might take some better photos another time.

Anyone know what year the frame is?

20140516_151256_zpsyj1mvzk0.jpgeres my pre disc aggressor 3 from quite some yeara ago!
I think its something like 1999 and I got it from halfords (shudder)

After using for a year or so it ended up sat in the garage.
Over the last few years ive taken up enduro as in the motorised form and figures I really should be doing mtb training for it not road biking
so I dusted this one off and took it out 1st thing that happend was the chain snapped the next ride mech and hanger broke!
so it now has a new deore mech. Hanger and chain. I also treated it to a new set of cables all round.

the drive train isnt as smooth as it should but I dont want to throw to much money at it.

hope you like it. I forgot how much fun mtb is and cant figure out why ive only been on the roadbikea last few years.

ive just ordered a set of marzocchi mx comp forks as I reckon its a decent fork that can take v brakes and also discs so if I decided to put a disc front on wouldnt have to change the fork

Here's mine. I've been away for a long time, usedd to ride a gt talera around epping forest end of the nineties. I upgraded to this then a back injury and other things took over.
Just dug this out of storage, new pads, chain, cassette. A pair of fat semi slicks and I'm urbaning it for a bit until my fitness is up and I get a cycle carrier for the car.
Lot of changes I've found, disks, frame geometry, decent suspension (had a set of judys on this but found them high maintenance and weighty, tbh, preferred rigid ). Got to spend some time riding before I decide where to go with investing some hard earned.

    Looks good!

If you ever want to get back into riding Epping Forest, there is a group of us that ride it quite regularly, and anyone is welcome to come along. Have a look on essexhertsmtb.co.uk to see the arranged rides

Cheers, would love to get in the forest again and will take you up on that once my fitness is upto it. When I said I've just got the bike out of storage I really meant it ! I've also got to get a cycle carrier sorted. I've moved around a bit over the years but I'm back in essex now, although I'm just over an hours drive away.
Cheers for the link. I shall have a nose and will also pass it to some freinds who have recently got into mtb.
  • Late to the party... here is my very old GT Aggressor.
Bought in Bondi, Australia in 2000 (I think) - it has been with me to the UK, USA, Switzerland, Germany and Brazil.

Doesn't get ridden much anymore and probably isn't worth much but it has been a reliable bike for me.
I'd have another GT- in fact, might be time to upgrade.

Just put one of those spider web type saddles on and Kenda Klimax tyres - knocked another half pound off lol.

  • Im tempted by them saddles as everyone says their comfortable on the reviews. I obviously wont get a Tioga Spyder as they cost an arm and a leg. The unbranded ones are a fiver!

    Whats the weight at now?

Pinkbike had a Tioga one break during a review, it was the road one, but I definitely wouldn't buy an unbranded one...
