American Chris Horner is poised to sign with the Italan Lampre-Merida squad, sources close to the situation have told VeloNews.

The 42-year-old Vuelta a España champion will ride as one of the team’s GC leaders, alongside newly recruited world champion Rui Costa.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a source close to the deal between Horner and Lampre said the contract was “essentially 100-percent done.”

Horner could not immediately be reached for comment.

Team officials in Australia on Friday confirmed that there had been contact between the Italian outfit and Horner.

“When I left Italy, there was nothing confirmed,” Lampre sport director Bruno Vicino told VeloNews. “I know that there has been some talks with Horner, some negotiating, but as far as I know, there is no official news. There is some interest from the team to sign an American.”

Sounds like a bit more than a rumour

He's fallen down the ranks a bit. I remember him winning that edition of K-B-K with Stannard that was held on the set of the film The Day After Tomorrow

Yeah, although he's mostly ridden for smaller teams and specialises in semi-classics and bad weather. He was the man behind the short-lived plan this winter to set up a pro team for Dutch and Belgian riders without contract, backed by their national pro cyclist unions. Good to see he has a spot

“I will not drag it out over time. If I cannot find a place in ten or fifteen days, I will say a final goodbye [to cycling]. I hope not to have to announce that and to [instead] continue racing,” Sanchez said, according to AS. “I think these ten or fifteen days are crucial. If I am to get something, it must be now. In February, the races begin in Europe. It would be virtually impossible [to wait longer]. If I have no team this season, I will hang up the bike.”

Do we know how his health is now? From the updates I saw here and there it seemed he was still struggling to finish races last year. I can't find much on google or twitter.

Just an aside with regard to this year's transfer season, I had a look at what happened to last year's riders from collapsed WT teams - Vacansoleil & Euskaltel

Of the 58 riders they are now in:

    World Tour teams: 17
    Pro Conti teams: 9
    Continental Teams: 14
    No team: 18

Vancansoleil riders fared better than those from Euskaltel (probably due to more Belgian/Dutch teams than Spanish). 18 of the Vacansoleil riders ended up in WT/Pro Conti teams compared to only 8 from Euskaltel.

Hopefully Samu will have a team soon, I still think he has something to offer.

It is a bit pants isn't it?
  • According to Jonathan Vaughters, Acevedo's results were"...extraordinary. He tested better than Tom Danielson, which I thought I’d never see."

  • Missed this from a couple of days back - Jimmy Briceno and Carlos Galvis - 1st and 2nd in the Vuelta al Tachira have been signed by Savio's mob. Could be interesting in the Giro.
  • Julien el Fares signs a 1 year contract with La Pomme Marseille.

Three time (and current) mountain bike World Champion Nino Schurter is going to do the Tour of Romandie and Tour of Switzerland as a guest rider for Orica-Greenedge.
He's Swiss (hence those races) and sponsored by Scott (hence Orica).

Bizarre stunt. I'm sure the other riders will be well chuffed about him being parachuted in amongst then during 2 major races

It's not that bizarre, really. Cannondale & Saeco did the same thing with Cadel Evans back in 2001. I reckon Nino could come top ten in one of them

  • ^and look how he turned out!

    :)
  • Always remember Evans having a caad5 in Cannondale Volvo team blue/yellow rather than the usual Saeco red/yellow ... wish they still made them like that ...
