But they don't with Flanders and Fleche at the moment. Wouldn't it be a good to get coverage of these races first, before requiring other race organisers to run similar events.0 -

Olympics Road Race has changed a lot of attitudes in Eurosport about broadcasting women's races. Desire now there if they get decent quality content to work with.0 -

I think I pointed out in a similar thread last year that I couldn't understand why Eurosport showed the Sprint Challenge (or whatever is was called) at the GP Plouay when they could have shown the women's race instead. Same for the Canadian single day races as well.
The races are there, they already exist. If Eurosport have changed as you say, then lets see them. They don't need to be back to back with a men's race.0 -

Actually all the Women's World Cup races are filmed. However when Eurosport saw the quality of it they said it was unbroadcastable. They only want to get in if they've got good quality and regular content so they can build the audience, and hence the need to have races alongside the men.0 -
I think it was everyones favourite commentator Brian Moore who pointed out that there is a massive market for women's magazines, all of which have zero coverage of women's sport. There is always talk about girls being inspired by watching women's sport but the truth of the matter is that hardly any girls watch sport of any sort.
Obviously there are exceptions (a good number thankfully), but if this is about "the legacy"and all that noise, then putting womens cycling on eurosport won't make any difference. We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

The TV audience (from a gender split perspective) for women's sport actually doesn't vary much vs the men's version. Women's tennis, golf, athletics etc. all predominantly watched by men. The same men that watch the men's version of that sport! The audience for women's cycling is already out there!0 -

I don't understand what you mean. Are you saying that all the World Cup races they film are unbroadcastable or just some of them? Why is the quality going to improve just because they are associated with a men's race. Is that just not possible to do on something that doesn't?
And don't get me wrong, I have no problem in seeing a women's race before a men's. In fact, instead of showing 4-5 of a men's race where for several hours there is nothing happening, show less of the men's a couple of hours of the women's.0 -

What happens is where there is a women's race alongside a men's race obviously they use the same cameras/infrastructure etc. so the broadcast quality is the same as that for the men's race. At the other women's world cups the UCI employ some 'tuppence ha'penny' outfit to film it, and then when the broadcasters see it they say the quality isn't good enough. Hence my wish to see it compulsory to run a women's race alongside the men's as it solves this fundamental issue.0 -
Ah, Brian Moore. His knowlege of magazines that women buy must be immensely extensive.
Given the subject matter, and what I'm about to say, this seem as good a time as any to reveal that I am in fact Ms Richmond Racer. So unlike Moore I can speak with the benefit of personal experience.
Having given you all a mo to get over the shock...onto women, sport and wot we're interested in.
Firstly, as is so often the case, its dumb to try to generalise. Its not accurate to say that women as an entire gender are not interested in sport. Many have one sport or more, plus a type of fitness routine (yoga, gym) as part of our lives. In my experience, where there is a difference between men and women is that if you have a group of 10 males and 10 females, usually 9 out of the 10 males are interested in sport. Whereas say 5 or 6 of the females will be interested in sport. But perhaps that's still a higher number that you might have thought?
As for the magazines...a staggering number of womens magazines are aimed as fashion, looks, celebrity bol%^cks, food etc. However, surprise! there are also mags based around sport + health&fitness specifically aimed at women - equivalent titles to Men's Fitness for example. Then there are non-gender mags that women buy such as Cycling Weekly, Athletics Weekly, Runners World etc.
Last word re cycling and women: 1) my LBS has had a sharp increase in bike and kit sales to females, and 2) sportives are seeing record numbers of females registering, whereas until recently the entry list would be over-whelmingly male with a smattering of females.0 -

But then if Flanders, Fleche and even maybe GP Plouay (which I think has a women's race on the Saturday) have that setup already. We'll see those this year?
Maybe if they are shown, it will be proven if there is an audience and then surely the race organisers will want to have a women's race, rather than being forced to do so.0 -

No way! This can't be true! You'll be telling next that FF isn't French or that LL isn't from Leicester!0 -

Confessions are VERY on trend
Truth and Reconciliation - its the new black (tho I strongly suspect by the time this idea's run its course in cycling, it'll be very light grey)0 -

I have absolutely no idea how to fix women's cycling, but I know I watch it when it's shown. I hope that helps to sort things out!
