Why would Cavendish get upset about being asked about LA?

  • Cav's going to come in for a barrel of it from the media at races for the foreseeable future. Everyone knows he's easy to get a rise out of at the best of times, just after a race - especially if he's just lost

F*ck him and f*ck Wiggins too. In fact f*ck the whole sorry lot of them.

Armstrong came back in 09 with a serious cloud over his name. Did Cavendish speak up then? Did he f***. Lance Armstrong and a generation of EPO driven cheats are the reason he's living a millionaire lifestyle and not working weekends in a bike shop to make ends meet.

So I'm sorry Mr Cavendish if journalists ask you questions you don't want to answer while you're trying to talk about how great things are with [insert company name] and how you're looking forward to a new season with [insert company name] and how great the guys are a [insert company name].

    55 days to MSR

    Aye

    And Nicole Cooke too.

Speak up when you're racing or wait til you retire and your earnings aren't effected?

Name names if you know them or shut up.

    Jodie Foster too......

Maybe some of these journalists that are now demanding to ask questions should have spoken up themselves in 1999-2005, but they pedalled what they believed was a lie to their public in exchange for access and circulation. Now they demand the likes of Cavendish, who was a school at the time, answer all questions so these journalists can feel absolved of their own sins.

    1. The journalist he had a pop at is younger than him, so he too was at school when LA was around
    2. Plenty of journalists asked questions, but libel laws are a bitch... you can't just write what you think.

  • It was a mix. Some journos and publications were hamstrung by libel laws esp in the UK, though it is worth noting that some like Cycle Sport ended up being blacklisted by Lance because they posed questions in their articles and were clearly non-believers by a certain point in time.

VeloNews and Cyclingnews were absolutely shocking in their coverage.

    1. As a sports journalist, his job demands he take an interest, Cavendish could never talk about Armstrong again and it wouldn't affect his job.

    2. They are indeed a bitch, bit like constantly being asked about some knob from the past who messed with your sport, that probably gets to be a bitch as well.

    Do you like Cavendish?

Sorry, old chap, but it's not possible to libel a convicted doper. Futile argument now the authorities have passed sentence.

Libel laws didn't make them put him on the front cover of their magazines and write sycophantic articles though.

True. Either way, none of this excuses the display from Cavendish in the video clip aimed at a writer who wasn't around during the LA years, but who would - I have no doubt - have asked LA tough questions had he been.

Cavendish wasn't in school in 09/10.

Right. So it's his fault he's been sent to cover the OPQS launch then? How's it going to look when he comes back and HASN'T asked Cavendish a single question about the biggest story in cycling ever?
I will go back to the original point of this topic and Cav's unacceptable behaviour. Intimidating behaviour and calling on your press officer to act as a bouncer when you don't like the questions are traits that we shouldn't see in pro cycling if we want the sport to move forward. He should be professional enough to give a considered opinion or defer comment until later, not act like a complete oik. Many people watching that clip will think, "Oh yeah, what's he hiding then?" Not smart.

    What a great reply though......

“We don’t assume every current BBC presenter is a sexual deviant because of what Jimmy Savile and his cronies were doing in the 1970s.

Yes it's a good line but its falls apart when analyzed.

Firstly Saville was an anomaly, it would be ridiculous to believe he was the norm in the BBC (even if there was a culture of sexism). EPO was the norm in cycling - pick any TDF top ten from 1990 on an you'd be hard pushed to find a clean rider.

Secondly it would be a leap of faith to assume the current riders are clean. The final GT podium of the year featured 2 convicted dopers and a rider from a team thrown out of the top tier on ethical reasons.

Thirdly this was happening in 09/10. Not some long gone era.

Possibly, but I'm sure more would actually like to hear what Cav really thinks about the biggest thing to affect his sport. Wouldn't you?
