Each to their own, but boy that is one heavy saddle!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • Is it? No idea to be honest. When I sit on it its comfy and for me that's the main priority in a saddle isn't it? Amusingly a mate on his ultra trick Scott carbon full susser was moaning about his ultra light racing on an all dayer in the Quantocks recently. I almost had to physically remove him from my bike as he couldn't believe how comfy my perch was......

The carbon one at £423 is only 105g but I suspect that might be deemed too expensive perhaps?!

    Corners the Controversial one!!

Only shortcoming I've discovered is the nose will bend if you miss time a landing.

I bet that guy who misjudged his landing in the crudcather thread bent his nose...

I do agree that a comfortable perch is the first priority, however I love my Bontager inform XL which came in at just under 200g for £40......my other 2 rides both have 300g Spoons for circa £20 ea.

  • Was out this week night riding in Cranham Woods and wider bars were a definite must have! So some Crank Bros Iodines 30mm rise/680mm wide 31.8 clamp were procured and have been applied via a 90mm RaceFace stem. I've also ditched the 42T outer ring in favour of a Truvativ bash guard. The Token grips (double locking) were robbed from my Mount Vison which is having a winter rest/rebuild currently. The Carerra will also be upgrade to 9-speed over the winter a parts on the MV are upgraded to XT. Ever onwards, Corners

At cranham tomorrow with the boys, hope it's a bit drier than last time I went. It's our local, being chelt boys
  • It was pretty firm in most of the places we rode. Lots of leaves in piles about to add to the mystery! I'm either off down the Forest or might go to Cranham again in the am.

I once owned a Carrera Gradient back in 1997. Was my pride and joy until I got run over by a joyrider.
Still it provided me with hours of fun exploring as a kid.
Will try and dig some pics out and get a spec up too.
Constantly trying to upgrade my parts. It is a long road ahead as things are so expensive for little gain. n+1 is always the principle in my mind.

Can anyone recall the BB size on a 2004 Kraken? Im slowly getting parts to revive the beast as a trainer bike.

68mm shell, square taper, original crankset needs a 118mm axle, but I doubt it's still on the original so the axle depends on the crankset.

Its currently got no BB so i can either just get a square taper and use the old crankset i found hiding in my brothers garage or get a new crankset entirely. Not sure what ill do to be honest

So you have to decide what crankset you want and get the BB to suite.

Lewis has had his bike since the start of the year but have changed a few things from when it was originally bought.

now runs an RST first 24 fork (has compression and rebound adjustment) rather than the god awful suntour XCT JR. The suntour's spring was too hard and they don't sell different springs for the fork. it had preload but not adjustable compression or rebound damping. Bike would be better with a ridged fork.

The OE bars were actually quite light but not wide enough at 580mm so they were swapped for a 620mm scandium bar from eXotic.

the original brakes were useless so swapped to avid elixir 3s pretty much straight away, while the grip shifts where swapped for SRAM X3 along with the rear mech and front mech as hand me downs

F tyre is a swchalbe rocket ron and the rear is a kenda smoke. We also changed the pedals to superstar nanos and the grips to uberbike lockons.

this was pre forks, bar and pedals which he got for his birthday yesterday

Didn't even know such a thing existed.

Looks about the same spec as the vengeance. It's not a £600 bike half price - they're being rather dishonest with their RRP there.

Halfords sales are like DFS and SCS etc, mostly a figment of their imagination, looks OK, much like the vengeance, it may even be the same frame as the 26" hard tails as my (older frame style) would take 650B tyres.

To post pics use an external host like photobucket and paste in the image link.

  • Here's my 2007 Carrera Kraken with a few recent modification's ( inspired by The Rookie ) as I get it ready for a new season of xc racing.

    carerra_zps0ae5c429.jpg

Paint has been stripped and frame has been left naked.
Drivechain is now running 1x10 with deore cranks, wolftooth 34 narrow wide ring, XT shifter, SLX Shadow+ derailleur, SLX 11-36 cassette, and SLX chain.
Brakes changed to Magura MT2, wheels are Mavic 717's on XT hubs.
Bars changed to Bontrager RL carbon with exotic foam grips.
    Forks replaced with Manitou Skareb's

Currently weighs 25lbs exactly. I hope to get that down, can save over 1.5lbs when I switch out the wire rubber queens and tioga for racing ralph / rocket ron. Will also be changing the stem, seatpost and saddle so more weight will be shaved. Really loving the 1x10 setup and with the narrow wide and clutch mech it is so quiet, and despite a few "tumbles" have yet to drop a chain.

Looks like a nice spec there, let me know how you get on with the exotic grips, I didn't like mine at all but you may like them.

I'm still on a rattly 9 speed setup so have to admit to some envy there!

    Update on mine now here
    viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=12850357&p=18718096#p18718096

Now just over 9.9Kg, next step will have to be polishing the frame which should see me down at about 9.7!

  • Hey all you carrera riders, I have an 06 Vulcan, it's about to get a bit of cash spent on it, but, what forks are you finding work best? I don't have hundreds and hundreds for forks, so cheaper the better haha, so what you running?

I would like 120mm, for trails mainly

    Thanks

Just bought 120mm Epicons for my Kraken - £135 off Ebay (plus another 10% off that 'cos they'd sent me a discount code).
  • As it happens im putting epicons on my vulcan at the moment. Mine came as 100mm and I changed them to 120mm.

Havent tried them yet, I need a star nut to finish but theyre just under 1kg lighter than the XCM
  • Would m596s fit straight on my Vulcan without an adapter?

    Are they still good value?

I think CRC only have them the wrong way around atm

Same here, easy to do. Mine weigh 1660g with uncut steerer.
  • Okay my new fork is on, 120mm suntour epicon

I had to change it from 100mm to 120mm, you have to remove a pin, nerve racking because its a hollow pin but it worked in the end

It feels way better and the weight saving is a plus.

Just ordered shimano m615s for it

Then I should be leaving it as it is. Ive spent a bit of money on it but I was worried that if I had bought something more expensive and I hadnt like the MTBing id have wasted money so im happy enough to upgrade a few things now that ive gotten into it and have an idea of what i want

I've just bought the same forks and done the same 120mm conversion - dead easy job. My scales say mine are 10g lighter than yours though, you must've put a few fingerprints on yours, lol.

I haven't fitted mine yet, but even without the improved damping, dropping a kilo of weight from your forks must give a really noticeable difference. I'll be changing the OE tyres and tubes too , so should lose about another 40g unsprung weight there too. I have my Kraken and Boardman hanging side by side in the garage and when you spin the front wheel of each gently you can really feel the extra inertia on the Kraken.

Wow, a whole kilogram? That's a helluva lot of weight! Makes you wonder what the old ones were made of?!

Steel stanchions and steerer (ally on the Epicon), plus losing having a steel coil spring.....

My (100mm admittedly) Manitou Skarebs are 1450g, my sons 120mm Manitou Blacks are 1650g.
