My commuter still runs a 2006 OE carrrra hesdset that has had only cleaning and greasing!

Set to on reviving the Kraken today. Went well bar loosing a brake mount. feels pretty light but ive still to mount the gears and cranks. Going to set it up as a 1X9 32T up front 11-32 on the rear. Knobblies are only on so i can fit the brakes etc properly. It will end up with a set of Swalbe Kojaks on

You'll be a bit undergeared on a 32:11 on Kojaks, my town hack runs a 36:11 on 26" slicks and could do with a little more top end.

May have a nose into a new cassette in that case, I seem to remember it was seized on last time I tried to remove it.
Ill soak it in something see if itll come loose a 36:11 sounds good nice speedy range of gears. Annoyingly I seem to have lost my crank bolts so I may take a ride down the LBS later see what they have in.

As the smallest gear on and cassette you can use is an 11T, you'll need to look at the chainwheels not the cassette! (as Something like my 36T like I said.) The 36-11 will just mean you have an even shorter lowest gear and not increase the highest gear which is what you need.

P.S 36:11 is a ratio (as in 36T chainwheel, 11T on cassette), 36-11 is a cassette range. You got it right in your first post and wrong in the second.

This is my kraken. Think it's a 2004/5 frame can anyone confirm. The parts on it are for a Vulcan I'm refurbing for my wife, but while I'm prepping and painting that I built the kraken for use!! :D

I do suck at this sometimes! Looking now its makes sense, the cassette will have no bearing on it just the chainwheels, which is now going to become a 36T so its should be 36:11 and from memory the cassette which is still firmly stuck on was 32-11. Ill be transferring my deore crankset over. Im going to try it without a chainguide first no point getting one if its not needed

    I recognize that bike....

My Subway/Fury mix up will be getting its MTB fittings tonight so it might be time to give it some TLC.

I have to say, if I enjoy my ride over the weekend I might just upgrade the forks as I think what's currently there is completely seized up.

    Still recognise it?

I need to remove the bash guard really to drop the chain device down, rode it the other day with just the bash guard an it kept throwing the chain off when shifting down. Current setups sorted it but I know its not right.

So far this has cost me some new outer tube, gear cable, seat post, a stem and tyres the rests from my spares box which im quite pleased about.
Still tempted by a set of rigid forks though.

Have to say its quite scary, how quiet this is when going and how quick it is when it gets going . Really looking forward to hammering around on this.

Getting similar to mine (link in sig) which had the silver 'gooey' coating before I stripped it.

I run an inner chain guide with the bash instead of an upper element guide like that as my local riding involves crossing lost of logs!

Yeah man its looking great, once you start its kinda like building Lego.

I just got a new BB for mine, so hopefully the chainline will run true tomorrow.

Here's how it looked up until yesterday:

    Plans for the future:
Swap the seat clamp, repaint and new cables all round and maybe get one of those Tioga rip-off saddles which look awesome too.

Either that or buy a spec Rockhopper and give this one rigid forks.

Thats not a bad idea Rookie, the superstar one is a two piece job so I may see if taking the front half off means it'll sit lower to the chain and still do its job.

I do want to strip the paint but I'm not looking forward doing it though.

Lance that does look good an your right it's like lego once you get going.

Need to lob this on the scales at the weekend, I'm not chasing numbers just like knowing what I'm dragging up hills with me!

What do you use to weigh it?

I was considering using a set of luggage scales I have, but I don't think they're that accurate.

Use your bath room scales , 1st just weigh yourself and then again holding the bike if you can then deduct your weight off the total  ..

Hmmm could do it using the Wii fit scales, is it OK to have my bike setup as a pet....

  • Anybody post me a link up for a headset for one of these?
    th_7470b8038a3cc61049637483ff09bb9f_zpsacf7d31e.jpg

Its a bit rough and grinding, I think the bearings are shagged. Don't want to spend mega bucks, just one that's fit for purpose.

They take any semi-integrated headset (also known as zero stack), Halfords do a decnet FSA one that is a bit heavy.

my titan 650b with a few mods.
    x-fusion velvet forks
    deore hydraulic brakes
    deore 10 speed shifters
    slx shadow rear mech
    deore hollowtech chainset
    bontrager carbon bar
    ragley stem
    racing ralph tyres
    11-34 10 speed cassette
    xt front mech

used this for the grizedale duathlon and it performed brilliantly. I did have spds on but have changed back to the platforms.

I could've stopped at the forks but once I got spannering and ebaying I couldn't stop.

Wow mate you really have upgraded! I was looking at one of these in my local Halfords the other day, and the first thing i could think of that needed doing was the brakes and fork. Good frame though and despite its 650b im pretty certain with the 26" frames Carrera use the same frame across the board (well they all look the same anyway

  • The forks were atrocious and weighed a million tonnes. Just changing the forks and tyres got the weight down. The group set was just a luxury for me. The standard stuff wasn't too bad even the cable brakes were pretty good. However, what I have now is much better. Next is a double chainset because with a 10 speed spread I don't need a triple.
