I few techie IT nerds, but not as many as I would have thought. I'm a technical architect working for a IT consultancy and specialising in Microsoft business intelligence systems. Basically, I help clients to refine their business requirements, and then scope the systems, before defining functional requirements and then working with the developers to implement the systems. How's that for nerdy

I'm a failed musician who become a touring backline/guitar tech, then to self employed guitar tech, then asked to take up position in an independent musical instrument store (after a 3 year stint in-house at a concert hall). Work on instruments from people like Martin Taylor MBE, Deacon Blue, Simple Minds and The View... Not a trained luthier so don't carry out acoustic builds from scratch but carry out all other setups & repairs from electronics to fret levelling. I love the problem solving aspect of the job, and get to work alongside great mates and play with guitars all day. Lucky me! I am however also studying an Open University degree in Environmental Science with the aim of eventually getting a job that pays more but is not as enjoyable (human priorities are intriguing!)

If you look at an oil rig it,s made up of 2 parts. Firstly the jacket. That is the part of the platform that is usually fixed to the seabed and rises up out of the water. Usually it protrudes about 20 Metres out of the water. On top of the jacket you have the working area with various decks usually referred to as a module or platform or topside.Of course you cannot build both the jacket and module as a complete unit and then install it offshore so we build the two seperately and ship them out to the location. We then install the jacket using a large offshore crane and then use the same crane to lift the module onto the jacket and then weld the module to the jacket. We then connect all the remaining parts together and complete all the commisioning work before the drilling rig comes along and starts drilling the wells. We refer to the last phase of the operation as the Hook-Up. Hope this explaination helps.

I'm a bus driver. It's great fun watching all kids of two-wheeled lunatics (and white van drivers) trying to commit suicide on a daily basis.

People think it's easy as pie, sitting on your a**e all day but you really do have to have your wits about you. Especially in rush hour when in the town centre.
