It's so shiny you'd almost want a road sweeper to run ahead of you when you rode it.

My brain can't compute a 'retro' build with integrated brake / gear systems - that's modern stuff!

Older groupsets look so much nicer even if they don't offer the same level of performance.
  • Agreed. Also, most new bikes, with their single colour frames and cockpit, look so dull and uninspiring. Yes, they are superb machines but that is all they are. No soul.

Hmm... i'd beg to differ. Modern gruppo's give you more gear ratios and are lighter.

The Record titanium 8 speed groupset (including a titanium cassette) I bought in '97 went 10 years flawlessly (bar a few chains). There was some lament when I sold it.
The levers were Chorus but again, flawless.

The biggest leap is wheels. A really good pair of hoops could only be had handbuilt.

it's a good feeling. Took me an inordinate period of time to get the whole combo of texture and rise right.

Building a nice report at work.
Just love when it all comes together. Especially when you take something that takes somebody hours to replicate every single week or month and you give them a report that does it in minutes.

That Engima needs a horizontal top tube and non-British Leyland colours, IMO.
