Optional and setting are the two words that need explaining -- do new cars come with that now?
Yes. Bonkers really. There is a mechanical means whereby flaps are deployed/opened to create a sound.
Vtech was caught with his pants down when I asked how optimum scavenging of the cylinder was achievable when 'tuning' an exhaust system to make a particular note.
What it boils down to is that all the major car manufacturers want to create a unique sound which clearly identifies it as... an AMG Merc, a Ferrari, a McLaren etc.
It's not something that happens at the lower price brackets.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

Got stuck behind a real McLaren the other day. A black one. It looked like something you'd want squash pretty quick if you found it in the outback.

I've been through the McLaren engine building line. It's fascinating to see on a small scale like that. They also have a sound room where they can play with the engine pitch too.0

So you have a button (optional 'not as an option you choose when your buying the car then?' ) in the car which you press which allows you to set the tuning of the exhaust to give you a different note at a certain Rev just for the sound of it ? I don't think it'll have the appeal of my v4 two stroke bike at least it has the speed with accompanying howl. It has power valves on the exhaust ports that make it even faster.0 -
OK so there toys for the Top Gun enthusiasts, oops I meant Top Gear enthusiasts, but do these upmarket modern motors have Driver Monitoring Systems:

An optional extra; that I do not know.
It will change the sound of the car, whatever the revs.
What we are seeing, is the proliferation of 'street' cars that you can take on track days.
'Sport mode' as opposed to 'comfort mode' (some cars even have 'race mode') can do a number of things such as, stiffen the suspension, de-restrict the exhaust, lower the vehicle, alter steering (it's becoming very common for steering to electronically/electrically assisted), alter traction control and LSD settings, change gear change points with PDK (flappy paddle gear shift)... the list is endless.
Juggling all the above is through the ECU is often referred to as 'calibration'.
Probably more than you wanted but I see that you have a degree of understanding.
...and as a biker, probably eternally laughing at the 4 wheeled brigade.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
