    .

I’m as atheistic as they come but I find most atheists embarrassing, ignorant and downright offensive.

No one is going to change anyone’s opinion on faith unless they’re asked about it.

The contempt atheists have for something that people plainly find life enriching is remarkable, and their complaints always seem to be a confusion of simple faith and (geo)politics. Toybee is one of those.

The ignorance to just dismiss two millennia of organised religious practice, during which at least for 1800 it was the cornerstone of society as “baggage” beggars belief (pun intended).

Totally by accident I helped convert my best friend who was a son of an archdeacon to atheism and I’m persona non-grata with his family as a result, so I’m surprised to find myself defending religion, but I find myself doing it more and more regularly because of just pathetic behaviour on part of atheists.

Atheism does not make one superior.

I think most of them need to grow up and not be so childish about it. Certainly they ought to be less evangelical about it.

    And breathe.

    You okay now hun?

I know you are supposed to be controversial when writing opinion pieces but do such writers never pause before pressing send to wonder whether they are just being an idiot?

I thought you'd not like it, and wouldn't agree with its thesis, but given that it's an opinion piece, which Toynbee argues from her strongly atheist viewpoint, I can't see that she's being an idiot.
It's funny how some prominent Humanists seem to be more focused on being anti-Christian than anything positive. Somehow doubt she would write an article suggesting that we should drop all the religious baggage from Divali or Eid.

The irony for the Humanists is that they seemingly can't survive without Christianity.

Both Easter and the solstice have been hijacked by Christians from what were originally Pagan rituals (and then commercialised).
I would prefer a winter solstice feast on the 21st and forget all this mass present giving/shopping fever mania/consumption.

The earliest known calculations of the date of Easter date from 222 AD in Rome it also relates to the timing of the Jewish festival of Passover. They didn't time it to match a Northern European spring festival that nobody is sure even existed. The date for Christmas was similarly set (9 months after the Annunciation) long before it became fashionable to claim it adopted either the Roman festivals of Saturnalia, Sol Invictus or Northern European Yule.

A convenient coincidence not hijacking and plenty of the secular stuff has been attached to the religious bit throughout history. Athelstan held court on Christmas Day and distributed gifts - a scene replayed in the medieval poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

Got a new case for my e-reader for Christmas.
E-reader died. Fortunately before I’d unpacked the case so can be returned.

You genuinely have no usb-c chargers or a usb-c port on a computer or similar?

Or a usb-a plug? Thought they were ubiquitous.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Isn't the trivial annoyance that his laptop is broken? Rather than not having an alternative USB charger?

So normally NOTG would have gone to TBB's house to charge the phone, but now that's not possible?

It's trivially annoying for me because someone needs to come round to fix it under guarantee.

I still think it is the wrong port for laptops, but I'm no fan of micro HDMI either.

Also, the placement of this grate: https://maps.app.goo.gl/jAg7iCF3hE46UoED6?g_st=ic

Which is right where you are braking as you approach the junction.

Tricky in the wet. You’re also slowing up for a bus route and have seen riders slip on it and slide towards the oncoming bus…

The cable has usb-c on both ends. supplying a cable with normal usb at one end would have been the obvious choice.
