Schools are shutting for a day because the bank holiday was during half term

Truly these people have no shame

I complained about that upthread. I think I was told that I am showing my naivety about schools. You should be a pro by now.

The schools haven’t realised there’s a cost of living crisis.
Apparently need a red T-shirt, a blue T-shirt and fancy dress next week.

Another school one from me. In a calendar year, there are 5 inset days, 2 parents "evening" days and 3 half days at the end of term. So, a total of 10 days for which there are no childcare options as holiday clubs only do holidays. If you have another child in nursery or a different school, it is entirely possible for there to be very little overlap. That's a lot of trivially annoying days.

FWIW, I suspect most teachers would be rather teaching than insetting.

In all fairness, the bank holiday situation is no different for any other employees.

Christmas Day falls on a non-working day, you get a Monday bank holiday.

Work Tuesday to Friday, you get 0.8 days off on a bank holiday week.

Schools do plenty of stuff to suit themselves but on this one they are no different to any other organisation.

Be grateful that we have one of the fewest numbers of bank holidays in the world.
Only Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Taiwan have less.

The crown she had to make only had to go in this week. I think they’re celebrating the jubilee this week as they were on half term plus 2 extra inset days to make up for the bank holidays they had off.

I just don’t agree that 13 weeks is too little holiday

Not another rehash of this debate, please.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

In the interests of balance, I've just paid £39.98 for return flights to Palma Majorca... which is the cheapest flight I have ever booked.

I booked return Eurostar to Paris for £100, and that was before they announced a 20% off sale.

I guess booking just before they announce a sale is trivially annoying in itself.

Ah, I get discounted Eurostar travel anyway. Just a shame it doesn't extend to the Eurotunnel...

Also, I'd booked the trip to Paris to go to a concert because the (rearranged) London dates had been completely sold out since before the pandemic. Then a week later they released a few new tickets for London.

Only trivially annoying because I still get a trip to Paris.

I saw him a couple of years ago. I'd save your time, if not money.
His voice is shot and not going to get better with age.

Twice. Once in the 80s, and once with the wife in 2016.
2016 was the bad one. I thought it was only a couple of years. Wowza!

    Ahhh, the joys of ageing!

    How long ago?

At the start line of a triathlon a while back, I kept wondering why they’d put me in the wrong age group.
Turns out it was me in the wrong. Only saving grace was I hadn’t bothered enquiring as it really didn’t matter. Might have been embarrassing when they had to explain to me how old I was based on my date of birth.

Having to come back to Devon just five days before the Dauphiné was on my home turf, here at Col de Cabre today, after doing most of the stage on roads I know extremely well. Oh well.

People who don’t understand that there isn’t a linear price relationship between crude prices and gasoline prices, and there are inputs beyond the price of crude that go into gasoline prices.

I assume a buyer buys so many barrels of crude at a price then we pay through the nose if the price was high until all of those barrels have been processed. If the price of crude goes up after the buyers bought the barrels they charge us more to cover their costs. If the government taxes them more they pass the costs on to us. If the government taxes them less they invest more so they can screw us more later :p

I may be late to the party on this as hadn't bought much clothing recently but cycling shorts that nearly go to the knee and short sleeve jerseys that go closer to the elbow than the shoulder. We are not all chasing aero gains/looking like a pro and it would be nice to have decent kit that still has a traditional cut.

Changing fashions are very bemusing sometimes. It seems the mullet is back for (some) teenage boys - I can only assume it's a way of signalling their rebellious streak, but someone ought to tell them it looked really stupid the first time, and still does.
