It's a sad state of affairs but if I was looking to sponsor a sports team I wouldn't touch cycling with a barge pole.

Devestating for cycling really, very late in the day for the riders left without a team. Maybe they were looking to pull of some kind of coup with Cavendish - didn't happen so sponsors pulled the plug? Just a wild theory.

They were only announcing new signings to the women's team yesterday.

I always suspected that as a sponsor they turned a blind eye to the rumours about the team operations for years. Guess the whole USADA episode is proving that there is such a thing as bad publicity.

How long had Rabo signed on for as a sponsor, any chance of a T-mobile turning into High Road situation. (I guess not as otherwise the article would have said)

I just said on twitter, the USADA report is a convenient excuse to get out whilst blaming somebody else. Rabo have been a long term supporter of cycling, but never the best moral compass.

Biggest shame is actually for the women's team.

  • The team will continue in 2013 under a "white label". (whatever that is......like Liberty S in 2006, maybe?)

He was a 10 before the 2010 Tour so the dodgy readings may well come from before he was at Rabobank (although there could be more dodgy readings since then). Makes signing him a bit odd though as they should have checked and realised he was likely to be sanctioned at some point.

Well that's a bit of a shocker, but in these times of trouble if we can't get moral guidance from a bank, who else is there to turn to?

So how many PRO womens teams are there now? One? That's the last thing they need. I thought Rabo would be around forever!

Millar is not happy on twitter.
Dear Rabobank, you were part of the problem. How dare you walk away from your young clean guys who are part of the solution. Sickening.

Rabo had the worst budget-to-result-rate in cycling, its no surprise they would quit someday. I dont see how this has to do with doping.

Bit of a shame really, but not really a surprise.

I thought they would walk after the chicken fiasco.

Does this suspicious rider's surname begin with a B?
It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.
  • According to @TourdeJose the riders got the press release 30 mins before it went to the press. Nice :(

The other teams will be robbing banks (how fitting) to try to get Vos

Yes, it's Barredo. The UCI requested a prosecution be started on him yesterday.

Gutted-not a team that had any of my favorite riders, but I always liked the fact that they had a women's team and a development team. They also had a MTB team and I was lucky enough to get lapped by their rider Emil Lindgren sp a few years back at the opening round of the nationals. :D

Really uncertain times now-Rabo were one of the teams that you imagined were least likely to disappear.

    In fairness.

Rabo are doing pretty sh!t as a firm generally. (as all banks are).

Not that they should get any sympathy, but banks have been cutting hard to the bone and then some this year. Makes sense that they've got to the point where doing that whilst funding a load of millionaire cyclists who, rather like the bank, don't achieve much, is not tolerable.

  • Ok, more info coming through...it seems that riders WILL ride through 2013, wearing white jerseys (so no 'exposure' for Rabo on the moving billboards that are the riders).

Best hope none of riders win any best young rider jerseys then...

Yes, clearly this has nothing to do with Leipheimer and the USADA report, but has long been in the pipeline.
That's why the riders were given a whole half an hour notice.
