This stage alone has shown up how bad the tour de france course was - Prudhomme couldnt organise a P*ss up in a brewery.

.....also continuing with my cynicism: Cobo-seriously wtf! Doesn't inspire any confidence in his win last year.

Is every Vuelta spoiler thread going to consist of page after page of comments about Contador's doping and jokes about cows/beef?

It's going to get very old very quickly.....

Thank god Contador is back and showing some panache instead of looking at other riders. Think he was just testing today, after he kicked he didn't really seem to keep going full gas. But time will tell.

Valverde has discovered some form pretty quickly, not sure how he will do on the proper climbing stages.

Froome hasn't the got the kick but did well to ride back up to the wheel. Think this will certainly be the most entertaining GT of the season.

Not at all. Some will also be moaning about the Tour.

Probably. In much the same manner that we've had endless spoiler threads about every stage of every tour (and race) for the last couple of years telling us how no-one is worthy of a victory because Beefy Bertie isn't there.

    Tedious isn't it.

I will abstain from this if FF abstains from slobbering all over AC every time he gets out of the saddle.

From the colour of Contador's left thumb in that photo - has he just pulled it out of his ass?

I hope he was losing time to go for a stage win.

This race goes to show that the Tour and the Vuelta/GC are completely different races.

And Valverde won a pretty heavyweight stage in the Tour. He has also won a lot of races this year. He may have done well here with the high pace but he may well suffer later.

For me good racing, don't think froome's got 3 wks in him. Don't think piti looks to dodgie as roche as only a little behind. Will see how Bertie recovers.

Id agree with that, can't see how Froome can do this for 3 weeks after TDF efforts.

I also think Froome will struggle to last the three weeks, but today's finish suited the other three far more than it suited Froome. Those are three of the best hilly classic riders in the world, and Froome finished among them. I think it will be a different strong four when the long climbs come along.

At both last year's Vuelta and this year's Tour, Froome got stronger and stronger as the race progressed, but sure, without doing GTs back-to-back....

It is worth noting that there was a decent size field only 6 secs behind...it's not like they destroyed the rest even if they whittled it down. It's just very exciting to watch even if the gaps aren't large (which is a good thing).

I reckon Froome will be fine. Zero to hero, but he will perform. He was softe pedalling the Tour supposedly apart from the TTs...

Looked to me as though Contador was only really racing Froome. He didn't seem at all interested in J-Rod or Valverde.

The camera bikes seemed to be getting way too close, at one point leading Contador out for his dig on the flat, but generally throughout the race.

...and I chose to watch the cricket. Why did both sporting events reach a climax at exactly the same time grrr.

Does cricket have a climax? I thought it was mind-numbingly dull the whole way through?

Surely you have to win a hilly classic or two to be regarded as one of the best at it in the world?

    Boogerd notwithstanding I guess.
