Is there such a thing as jersey etiquette?

WOW, I just got some SKY kit & didn't even realise what you wore was up for debate?
I think with the success of the British SKY team, & team GB at the olympics there will be thousands of new cyclists hitting the roads without a care in the world for what they wear, and to me thats great as long as more people are getting out there and doing it! (and could probably do without some ELITIST shouting abuse at them as they start out in the sport we all love)
I've read the "Velominati rules" & chucked as I made my way through, but made me think...... how old are these rules?
I, for one don't care much for "the rules" & will be polite & curtious to everyong I see when I'm out, regardless of what they are riding, or wearing...... & I will be wearing my SKY kitS-Works Tarmac Disc Di2 2017

Pssst - I'll let you into a secret, the Velominati 'rules' are an affectionate in-joke. Don't panic.0

I don't care what anyone wears or rides, be it team kit, a KOM jersey, an entry level ride or a Sky Dogma (as someone was moaning about in a 'Your road bikes' thread. I wouldn't dream of going up to someone in the street and telling them that I don't think that they should be wearing an item of clothing, so why would I do it else where ?
Ride your bike and enjoy it. If you see me out riding and negatively comment on what I'm wearing, don't be offended if I call you a sad c*nt.Science adjusts it’s beliefs based on what’s observed.

Noob/Long time lurker here!
Don't get this.
I'm about to switch from riding a MTB/Hybrid to commute & distance rides at weekends to a shiny new road bike with the aim of training for Sportives next year.
I can knock out an average of 16 mph plus on the MTB over 60 miles or more & am looking forward to being able to increase that on a road bike.
Obviously the purchasing of the road bike has meant a lot of new kit to go with it, one of the things that's put me off buying any team kit has been the comments on here in various threads about individuals wearing it.
However I'm lucky enough to have access to Bontrager kit at trade or even cheaper prices & so my kit is all top end Bontrager, as it's significantly cheaper to me I want top end as I can afford it & intend putting it through some serious paces.
So to all those of you calling the "all the gear no idea" approach how does make me any different from people with team kit on?
It doesn't really does it? From your narrow mind set as I've brought high spec matching gear I'm likely to be parodied for buying stuff I know will last & makes me as comfortable as possible without sacrificing performance.
Stereotyping, it's great innit!0 -
I reckon a lot of this is in the mind. I've been riding a fair few years, just like some other people here, I have never once been on the receiving end or witnessed any of this behaviour being dished out.0

Very much this. I sometimes wear team jerseys as the cheapo ones from china are pretty good for the cash, and I've never heard so much as a peep from anyone.
Maybe people are thinking it or not, but I'd quite happily bet that the vast majority of people who whinge on this or any other forum are just a bunch of keyboard warriors and would never say a word out on the road.
Same as the constant p!ss taking of people wearing Rapha. For different reasons obviously, but again, it only happens from behind a screen.
Wear whatever you want.0 -
Well, Im new to road riding and have to say I was looking forward to joining a club. I happen to like the Sky shirt, so I got one, mind you it turns out it was a fake, so it'll be going in the bin now and I'll get a proper one.
I also read reviews on the bikes in my price range, deciding that getting a carbon one on finance may be a bit selfish when I have three children to support. The bike I decided on was a Specialized Allez because it got decent reviews on this site.
Having spent an evening on the forum it seems I'll be seen by some to be a pro wannabe on a piece of rubbish bike who has no business on the road. Can't wait to roll up at the club on the first day!
Mind you forums no matter what the subject is always has a few high and mighty trolls who try to make others inferior. I'll leave the inferiority complex to when I find myself totally knackered on my first long ride!0 -

This is my first post on this forum; so here goes:
I think people should wear what they like & I am sure they will do.
It's most likely that anyone taking exception to another cyclist wearing say a Polka-dot jersey will keep it to themselves or back stab o& talk behind said riders back anyway. If 15 stone Geoff isnt worthy of the Polka-dot jersy you can bet most elitist leg shavers arent strictly worthy of the £5k state of the art Pinarello they pose about on either.0 -
Each to his own, but if you wear stripes or classification jerseys you will be gently teased, any more than that is crap. Clubs are not elitist or pompous, club riding is the backbone of British road cycling and the whole sport would be lost without it.
Incomparable is the football shirt/cycle team top argument, different mindsets and comprehensions.
I may be wrong but I don't think you would be allowed to race in a Pro cycle team top as it has sponsors all over them. Your own club top with or without sponsors is allowed as you have 1st and 2nd claim rights for your race licence.
Enjoy cycling, but I think a nod to the achievements and respect due to the awards champions wear is a good thing, cycling heritage benefits from it. If you ride and push it, in any capacity from noob to elite Cats, you know how much effort, pain and commitment goes into winning stripes and classifications, naivete excepted.I don't mean to brag, I don't mean to boast, but I'm intercontinental when I eat French toast...0 -
Yes there is.
A white jersey with huge red dots is an affront to common decency. It's one thing wearing one and getting to bank a couple of thousand euros extra each stage and cop off with super fit podium girls. It's another thing completely to fork out £50 on one and wear it to ride up Box Hill every week.
Yellow and Pink are not forgiving colours. You can pull either off if you're lithe and tanned, but not if you're pasty and white and carrying a little bit of excess flab.
Also, it's all about context. An Assos jersey is probably a wonderful garment to wear and does not say anything about the rider. Pair that Assos jersey with some Assos bibs, an S-Works Roubaix or Pinarello and full Garmin 800 setup with heart monitor and a slightly podgy man in his late forties/early fifties and you have a c*ck (or Sir Alan as he likes to be called).0 -

And there speaks the voice of jealousy. So what if some overweight newbie can afford all the best kit but doesn't do it justice. What harm is it doing anyone? None at all.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0

Having said that, anyone wearing one of those godawful Foska jerseys should feel nothing but shame for their poor taste in clothing.
Wore my Marmite top today. Damn my poor taste
Still, most of the other cyclists waved or said good morning. Even the chap that overtook me on the hill but I think that was more out of pity that anything else

personally I avoid any clothing that makes me pay to advertise companies or products be that bike, surf, gym etc. If I were sponsored I would wear team gear but no way will I pay for the privilege of advertising for others.
end of the day though it's whatever makes you happy.0 -

See your point Rees and its a good principle but in practice it's tricky as most sport clothing maufacturers have their logos on display.
The Marmite top I see as a bit of fun and I perceive it as a British product so less inclined to worry about it as much as, say, the big yellow M logo that sponsored our olympics.
We all see things differently though"You really think you can burn off sugar with exercise?" downhill paul0 -
A marmite top is different anyway ... only thing superior to that would be a Vegemite top0

Just give up reading shite like this on forums .
GRAPH required, but a quick read gives me the impression that no one is actually against the wearing of certain jerseys.
Anecdotes about this club or encounter are not evidence of a malaise within road cycling circles as regards a dress code.
We aint doing GOLF.
The only certain thing is that when this thread dies a death, someone else will troll another one.0 -
