Bloody strava. Went for a fairly gentle 30 miler last night, gave it the beans on one fairly gradual climb to claim a KOM, all good but on my way home I thought as I felt good I'd detour to have a crack a retaking a segment I lost a couple of weeks back. The result: I absolutely killed myself and blew up spectacularly then limped the last 5 miles home with my tail between my legs. Damn you strava!0

Still a newbee what is the KOM status-King of Mountains? How do you get one do you have to get certain rankings/speed etc?0 -

The novelty of Strava wore off for me pretty quickly. Deleted my account. The truth is a KoM means feck all to most people (just fun), but then there are the losers who take it seriously and go out specifically to beat people when the weather conditions are right or as part of a groups ride, etc. Its all a bit silly really. I had a KoM ahead of Dean Downing before deleting my account, but there's absolutely no doubt as to who is the better cyclist so what does having a KoM actually mean? Nowt....More problems but still living....0

And that is why this is in Cake Stop and not in Training.0

Got a bit of a battle going on my local commuting hill. Buckled myself to get KOM on Wed last week then lost it last night, by 4secs. So I thought, there's no way I can get much faster. This morning, took the 4secs. 1st equal again on KOM, Ya beauty!

They're just petite victories, that is all but to someone like me who's a tad competitive they provide great motivation and turn a workout into a game. They also provide intensive intervals, great for improving fitness.
I tried to get a 27+mph KoM yesterday despite a 15mph headwind, complete and utter fail.
Does the use of "KoM" bother anyone else? I assume it means King of Mountain, there aren't any around here and most of my sections are sprints......0 -

I've just started using it but already I've got a max 109 mph. Not sure I had it in the 11 either! :roll:0

Do I need a premium membership to flag a ride?
Someone's just stolen the KoM I got back this morning by over a minute, doing 38mph with a HR of 86bpm.You've no won the Big Cup since 1902!0 -

I just find its a good training tool, causes me to push harder on climbs than I normally would and its useful for tracking progress on different hills without having to time yourself with a stopwatch everytime. At the end of the day its just a bit of fun.0 -

That's not Strava's fault, it's your GPS data.thecrofter wrote:Do I need a premium membership to flag a ride?

Can you even flag a ride? You can flag a dangerous segment, but I'm not sure about a ride. However, use the support ticketing system and just give them the ride's URL and explain that he wasn't on the bike during that bit. Support link at bottom of page, then its about the 3rd tab along I think "Submit a request".All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!

Bit of harmless fun unless your a bad loser, I use it for intense interval training which has resulted in my TT times dropping giving me 3 pb's in the last 3 races, not bad for a 47 year old ex smoker.0

I've joined, after claiming my first KoM last night. Luckily my segment isn't ridden much, and last night was good conditions, lower headwind than usual, it was raining so no pedestrians out. Over the winter I tend to have that stretch to myself so will plan to beat my record after the clocks go back, but it fair killed me to get that one!
I don't see it as something serious, and don't log all of my rides. The biggest challenge for me is beating my previous times; riding a Brompton in the city I'm never going to be the fastest overall, but I can still look to improve my own times!0 -

43 members now ..
I'm interested to see if anyone has a good year of data .. I'm sure people would be interested in seeing segments that you ride daily or weekly illustrating the increasingly fast times. If you're new to Strava .. pick a segments and click on 'My Results' on the left beside the leaderboard. All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!

We all know what people are like. It's only fun when you're winning. And there's always someone taking it ridiculously seriously trying to get a KoM. I'll just stick with my real racing....More problems but still living....0 -

For me Strava is much more interesting for the social aspect of seeing what your ride companions were doing - how and how badly we managed to drop someone on one of the hills - hearing about other rides from the club that I wasn't on through the comments etc. It also provides a good way to define the parts of rides where people are free to go as fast as they want because they know where the regroup point will be - without having to have that discussed.
Also the historical performance of any segment is useful to compare performance quickly. KoM's aren't that interesting, but they're still harmless.Jibbering Sports Stuff: http://jibbering.com/sports/0 -
