50 Shades of Grey

OK so come on own up who has read it? Who has bought it for their missus becuase (i) she nagged and then (ii) when you found out what it was about you bought it in the hope of a 'promise'.

I did! Have I got laid because of the book? No. Have I got laid in the style that the book portrays? No. (She is clearly reading it wrong).

What I get told is that it is interesting, saucy and poorly written. Ms DDD can't believe that so many of her friends would so openly discuss enjoying the book given the content. They are basically closet sex freaks.

    Mummy porn.

My receptionist was reading it at her desk a few weeks ago and looked positively hot and bothered :-D Hambones? Hambones? Are you out there?

Dunno, but it got slated by Pamela Connolly in the Guardian today. There was also a can you spot the author quiz last week with 4 or 5 steamy excerpts and a multiple choice list, worryingly including Alistair Campbell.

Yes, Cambell used to write porn for the erotic review IIRC.

I actually did start reading it out of curiosity. It's failry poorly written and so far even the rude bits have been pretty dull (only 100 pages in or so, and I have given up with it now). Words like "down there" are used for rude bits and Grey is the cheesiest imagining of a person possible; he says things like "my hobbies are expensive and elaborate" "I dont have a board of directors, I own my own company so I answer to no one". Characters are called things like "Anastasia Steele".

Each to their own though, film might be worth a watch :)

A female friend of mine has recommended loads of books over the years but said that 50 Shades was poor. Poor plot and there's only so many S&M scenes you want to read before you're bored. She said its only redeeming feature was its Mills & Boon "will they, won't they" element. All of that said, it's clearly very popular and I'm sure a bit of mummy porn does no-one any harm...

Oh and if any woman actually met a bloke like Christian Grey who didnt have any money he would be dismissed and a user and a t*****r straight away.

I haven't read the end but if they do end up together Miss Steele has found a way to cure the worst kind of sociopathic tendencies.

    I would imagine very little.

I've not read it yet so should reserve judgement, but I hear it is poorly spiced up Mills & Boon written badly. That said, you have to admire anyone who manages to find their market and be successful within it. It's no good criticising the likes of 50 Shades of Grey and the Twilight books for being poorly written dross (even though they are) if you haven't achieved similar success yourself.
  • I'm wondering how many architects are getting commissions from West End residents for a 'Red Room'

I persevered with the books but gave up at 'Blip' If it's an insight into the female psyche then I'm keeping the meat and two veg thank you very much.

I've not read it - a friend is quite heavily into that kind of thing though, so she's been making my hair curl for years with the sort of stuff she gets up to. She said it's rubbish and nowhere near what BDSM is like. Mossychops - apparently it doesn't even start to get going until around p150 according to the girl currently sat next to me at work!

Anyway, I prefer the Irish Mammy Porn on Twitter called @50ShadesOGreen - it sounds like Mrs Doyle from Father Ted....

A male friend of mine is reading this ATM. He then asked my Mum at the weekend what she thought of it.

Ahem. I believe a much, much fuller account of your conversations with this "friend" is called for. Omit no detail no matter how trivial it may appear. It is essential that we are fully apprised of her experiences in order that we may pass judgment on accuracy of the accounts in the 50 Shades trilogy.

Took me all of 24 hours in total to read which shows it's an easy read (I'm dyslexic and a slower reader)

To be honest within the first 100 pages I was thinking that I could have written such a book myself, and I am no writer by any means!

Bit of fun, easy read about sums it up.

I am worried that Jake is now reading it especially when he comes out with the comment 'errrm yep, don't do that, it's painful'

It may make you cross your legs and clench your bum, Mr G66. My friend is a bit of an ex-goth, a bit weird, and yes, quite into the whole BDSM thing. But, she's the um, dominant character in the relationship. I was never able to quite look her boyfriend in the eye after that.

    Still want details...?

My Nan's eyesight is going so I'm currently reading it to her in 2 hour stints on Skype in the evening.

It's pretty poorly written but she seems to be enjoying it.
