Also, what's the deal with the Brit women? I'm guessing the woman who wasn't selected for the Olympics only went and became British champion, right?

Generally - I believe that many national Olympic councils require the selections to be made by May at the latest.

The exact same situation has arisen in Ireland. Matt Brammeier won the men's title but isn't on the Olympic squad. Fact is, the nationals are on too late to be part of the selection criteria.

Not really, the Athletics trials were this weekend as well. Surprised Brammeier didn't get picked whenever the selection had to be made though. Who else is in? I assume Roche and Martin but surely Matt would be the third pick?

But when were the nominations to the British Olympic committee to be made for womens' cycling?

Re: Brammeier - the third slot has gone to David McCann. The selection criteria were announced some time back and he didn't make the cut. Brammeier has appealed to Cycling Ireland, had his appeal rejected and is now appealing to the Olympic Council of Ireland.

Athletics is not really comparable to cycling when it when it comes to Olympic selection criteria, is it?

Athletics = run this fast over this distance and you're in. Road cycling has a lot more variables to consider and you can't really determine much from one race, never mind the weirdest race of the year.

Why don't Ireland get as many riders as GB? I thought the Olympics gave each team the same number of riders.

I thought the UK get some places free because they're hosting it.

True but there was no real reason why they couldn't have hung on until after the nationals before making their final selection. Despite Laws being in decent form I can't help thinking her age may have gone against her on the selection (I'm not saying it should but it is about the only thing I can think of that may have swung it along with possibly Lucy Martin being a better lead out rider in a sprint).

Really? Surely the Belgians and Italians are having more than 3 riders?

Olympic squad size is determined by the nations position in UCI rankings ( at a set date back in 2011 I think). There is a further complication in that the field sizes for the road races are quite small - mens race = 145 riders , with a largest team size of 5 and 67 for the womens race, with a largest team size of 4.

Just watched the highlights, and while it was clearly a bad day for Endura, it shows how far they've come as a team that they were THE domestic team expected to chase. From what they showed, no other team gave a hand at all. Sky may be a level above everyone, but Endura have put themselves at a level above the rest.

Also, ITV, don't show the highlights of the race during the opening credits.

Thanks. Laws wasn't selected for the Olympics was she?

She was in the winning break with Vos in the race a few weeks back during which Vos cracked her collarbone. Another Dutch rider bridged (and won) and Laws lost the sprint for second, but it was a good sign of form.

Watched the highlights of the British National Champs last night, I really felt for Sharon Laws. You could see how upset she was at not being selected for the Olympics, she said it had been her main goal and when Ned asked her whether the winning the national champs made up for it the answer was a pretty clear "no". It must be devastating to miss out on a once in a lifetime opportunity when you're clearly showing that you warrant selection.

Do these guys even enter National Championships? Would be bit weird to see the national colours of Spain or France on a Basque national team.

They had 9 riders in this year's race, but as far as I can tell they've never won a national RR title in almost twenty years of sponsorship.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but they're not all OPL jersies - riders 1,2,3 and 6 all ride for OPL but 4 and 5 ride for MTN-Qhubeka. To make matters worse, the Namibian champion is Lotto Petrus, rather than Petrus Lotto.
