Cycle Police - interesting chat

8 cycle police manning the cross roads by Barbican this morning. Several bikes had been stopped and I asked them if they were on RLJ duty. Interestingly the occifer told me that today's focus was on cars who had encroached over the ASL. 3 points and £60 fines were apparently being handed out, along with a leaflet explaining what the ASL is about. He said they were also stopping the RLJers too.

Nice work! Interesting that they're doing that around Barbican. From what I've heard the community liaison meetings for that area used to be vehemently anti-cyclist. It looks like they're working to balance that.0

I'm such a cynic - I just don't believe that the focus was on ASL enforcement.
The rozzers really need to start doing that down by Vauxhall Bridge/Embankment - it's a complete joke some mornings.0 -

That's bikes with no engines, even though motorbikes and mopeds (tw@ts) seem to think they are allowed too0 -
An ASL is an area at Traffic Lights, usually coloured and has a picture of a bike on it. It is there for buses, taxi's and mopeds/motorbikes to squeeze into and force cyclists off the road. Cyclists seem to think it is there for them, and their safety and get cross when the buses, taxi's and mopeds stop in it."Encyclopaedia is a fetish for very small bicycles"0

Ah yes I know the ones.
As a lorry driver I have sometimes stopped just touching them as the lights can catch you out.
I do try to stop behind the line but some times its just not possible.0 -

A lorry stopping behind a ASL? You do know the police can arrest you for that!"Encyclopaedia is a fetish for very small bicycles"0 -

I find this quite worrying. As a commercial vehicle driver I would expect you to have a decent working knowledge of the Highway Code.0 -

As a driver you are allowed to stop in them but only if the lights are changing to red and you can't otherwise stop before the ASL. This is one of the issues around enforcing them - can't use cameras as drivers can just claim they were approaching/in the box when the lights changed."Mummy Mummy, when will I grow up?"

I wish the Devon and Cornwall Police would do the same, even if it was just one day a month. Both cars stopping in the ASL and RLJing is horrendous around here at the moment and there needs to be education on both sideOfficers don't run, it's undignified and panics the men0
