Broke my Fibula
Worst. Pain. EvAr!!!!
Came off the bike, over-extended my leg (found a rut instead of the ground), heard a "crunch" and down I went.
To make matters worse, I was on my own, in the back end of beyond. Managed to make it the 2miles (ish) to the road using a combination of limping and freewheeling very carefully where a mate came and rescued me.
Full length cast, got to go back to the fracture clinic on Thurs to asses if I need to keep the cast on or if they can just brace it up.
Break is right at the top, by the knee, doc reckons I was bIoody lucky not to displace it with all that moving about.
So what did you lot get up to today then?

I did take my phone, that's how my mate knew to meet me at the bottom of the trail at the nearest point.
I wasn't quite ready to ring for mtn rescue (wasn't bIoody far off though )0 -
+5 man points for getting to the road -10 stupidity points though for moving yourself (but I can't say most of us wouldn't have done the same!). Get well soon, couple of limes and some string and you'll be back fighting fit in no time!0

All the best mate .Hope you make a quick recovery0

Sh1t you did well to move half a mile on a broken leg (I've taken one and a half miles off because your bound to have elaborated the story a bit), Lucky your nails weren't painted too.
Obvious non-riding sympathy, hope it heals quickly.0 -
You manned up. For this, you have my respect. I hope it heals up quickly and isn't too sore just nowFormally known as Coatbridgeguy0

no it's proper snapped. can feerl/hear it moving about and everything. Luckily though, the tibia provides a fairly robust, natural splint.
I know it may have been pretty stupid moving it like that, but to be fair, if I'd called 999, I'm almost certain the area I was in would have required them bringing in the helicopter and I've always said I'd not want that unless it was actually life or death.0 -
either way, thats a broken leg and fair play. must hve smarted!
how long should the recovery take?0 -
FocusZing - According to Endomondo, it was 3.5km from where I came off to the road and took me just over 30min (thank christ it was almost entirely downhill).0

+100 man points. All hail the FSM and his noodly appendage!0

Not entirely sure tbh. Got to go see a specialist on Thurs who will have a better look. A&E doc reckons I'll be lucky to be back on the MTB before christmas though.0 -

Extra 50 man points for the precise measurement of manliness miles endured under pain, while doing a proper man's sport.0 -
So, looks like I need a new temporary hobby whilst I'm on the mend.
Top of the list so far is furious masturbating.
This is closely followed by tiddlywinks.0 -
Big wimp - you still have a usable leg. Stick an SPD on and off you go.I don't do smileys.

Ouch - and bad luck on no MTB'ing for a few months.

Bad luck and cudos for making it to the road!
So between now and Xmas you can build up a new bike - just in time for forum awards!0 -
Did something similar in April 2008, but on the lower part of my right leg.
Don't worry, you'll soon heal, just be positive and feed your body what it demands (my diet changed totally during the healing/repair phase)
I was back on my bike after 91 days and although it did sort of freak my confidence out a little, the leg works just fine
Get well soon CWNT and I do expect you to haunt the CC now that your temporarily immobile
NB:The worst part will be hobbling to the kitchen, making a cup of tea or something to eat, then realising you'll have to drink or eat it in the kitchen..
...and we demand to see the X-rays0 -
Any idea how fast you were going when you came off from the endomondo data?0
-
Can I draw a big spunkingcock on your cast?
Still, bad luck fella, but very youre still better on a bike with the cast than I am without0 -
bennett_346 wrote:Any idea how fast you were going when you came off from the endomondo data?
Not sure, but probably only a couple of mph. It was a very slow speed off. Front wheel vanished into a bog, back end started coming up. Sideways bail onto what looked like a grass bank, but was actually just a deep rut covered with grass.
I wish I could claim I did it at a thousand mph while hitting a massive roadgap or something else rad and gnarley, but fact is, it was pretty unsepectacular :oops:0 -
Ouch that sucks, hope the healing goes well, at least it happened at the shit time of the year and not summer. Just make sure you take it easy and do as the doctors say when the cast comes off. (I ignored them and it wasn't clever, if I'd only waited a couple more weeks before starting to do sport again I'd not have had half the problems I've struggled with over the past few years)
Other than that enjoy it, I loved playing on crutches. I tried to go upstairs as many steps as possible at a time, think the best I made at home was 6, I tried for 7 but fell back down, fortunately it was near the bottom, still hurt lots. I didn't enjoy being stuck in over summer though, and any time I went out I was annoyed about stupid tan lines
Also agree with Raymond about the diet changing totally.0 -
Proper bad luck mate, hope the healing goes well, can't believe you didn't get the services in to get you out. Top marks for manning up. 8) 8)0

Sorry and ouch that you are legless and well impressed about your self rescue I would have phoned for the whole RAF to come and get me if it was me.
...sorry to ask this but do you shave both your legs?0 -
Wow, Many man points! I had an off yesterday and just came away with some bruises, and a strained muscle or two.
The whole crutches/carrying something out of the kitchen becomes a real nightmare after a while - I managed to find a trolley type thing that I could push in front of me, v useful.
Good luck with the recovery!0 -
CWNT, did they perform surgery or is it going to be kept in a cast?
Another nightmare for me was showering, it was hilarious, me and my crutches in the bathroom. I got one of these covers and they are a blessing
When do we see the X-Rays? I took photos of the screen at the hospital with my mobile as they couldn't furnish me with a digitised copy.0 -

Alternatively a black wheelie bin bag taped around the leg works well too.0 -
