  • Cav came across well in the post win interview ... But then the bbc one was exactly the same (but not the same interview) word for word and sadly came across as rehearsed ...
I have a feeling that, love him or loath him, we won't be seeing very much of the 'real Cavendish' in the future. Instead everything he says will be carefully controlled by his team of PR and 'Reputation management' people.

I'd challenge any "reputation manager" to control what Cav says just after he's crossed the line (win or lose).

as it will probably be a bunch sprint why not cut the first 250km and start the race with 5km to go ;o

You don't really understand cycling do you? I assume you're joking.

C'mon, he wasn't humble. Generous maybe.

    But humble?

Not humble. He was honest as he always is, and generous with his praise for others.

But that's not actually what he said was it? What he actually said was "There COULD only be one winner after the effort that the guys put in." A very different context and perhaps a very deep insight into how driven he is to make the line for his team (whichever one he's racing for!) when they put the effort into getting him into that last 500m with a chance.

  • Some people would obviously have preferred it if 20 metres from the line he'd have looked round and waved Matt Goss past for the win, at least then he would have looked humble.

Honestly, there is some complete rubbish posted on these forums sometimes.

i think its about time people got off the kids back... i have to say i don't find him arrogant at all. What shred that might be considered so is what makes him the best sprinter in the world, and its far from arrogance, its confidence. He always praises his team mates, which incredibly somebody said early was rehearsed simply because he repeated what he'd said in another interview. We have a rider here to be proud of and one that lives up to his hype time and again...

I appreciate that Cav is not everyones cup of tea but people seem to be looking for problems that aren't there. He won, muttered a few words about how great his team were then stood on the podium and got his rainbow jersey. He didn't say he was the greatest rider in the world and that eveyone else was rubbish, and he also didn't say that he was rubbish and didn't deserve the medal. He said exactly what you'd expect anybody who's just won a race to say. Don't see what more there is to discuss.

Look, this is all well and true.

But eulogy style chat about being 'nothing but humble' because he's a Brit and won are a bit much.

He's a good winner no doubt, and he appreciates that the only way he can win is to have a lot of people sacrifice a lot.

Surely being world champion and being humble are mutually exclusive? Even Thor Hushovd, one of the most down to earth cyclists in the peleton, could hardly have been said to not be proud or of thinking he was inferior to the rest.

Cav comes across as being respectful to the other riders whilst being confident in the knowledge that he is the best sprinter in the world. He always thanks his teammates because he knows it would be a much, much tougher ask for him if they didn't put in the huge amounts of work that they do. And if these thanks sound repetitive and rehearsed it's probably because he's said it literally hundreds of times!

Congratulations Cav and Team GB, a great world championships for them. It's amazing to see how much we've progressed as a road racing nation over the last few years.

The reminds me of another rant : WTF was it not broadcast in HD?

    Grrrr

  • OK is Cav humble ? Let's settle this once and for all.

Referring to Dictionary.com it defines humble in the following ways.

    1.
not proud or arrogant; modest: to be humble although successful.

Whether or not Cav is arrogant is moot but I think he is obviously proud of his succcess and i wouldn't call him modest either - so not humble on this count.

    2.
having a feeling of insignificance, inferiority, subservience, etc.: In the presence of so many world-famous writers I felt very humble.

    Clearly not Cav

    3.
low in rank, importance, status, quality, etc.; lowly: of humble origin; a humble home.

He's the best sprinter in the world !

    4.
courteously respectful: In my humble opinion you are wrong.

Hmmm, not sure I'd pick Cav out as being particularly courteous so no.

    5.
low in height, level, etc.; small in size

Ah now we are talking - low in height - Cav is indeed low in height - so he is humble - end of argument.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

The first thing he did after crossing the line was to stop and look around for his team mates - this, for me, tells me that he isn't arrogant, just confident - if he was arrogant he'd stop and play up to the camera being stuck in his face.

Well done team GB and Cav! I genuinely didn't think you'd do it but hoped you would.
Great day for BRITISH cycling what with there being IOM, English, Scottish, Welsh (plus Kenyan and not sure if any Northern Irish) in the GB team.

It's not the only way he can win, but certainly means that there's more likelihood of it ending up as a sprint.

If GB had only had three guys at this Worlds, it would have been up to another team (Germany or Australia probably) to try and ensure that it ended up as a bunch sprint. If that had have happened, I'm sure Cav would have been in with a good chance of a win still.

why didn't Tony Martin sit up and wait for the peloton to lap him in order to lead the sprint for Greipel?

Is it not allowed to get lapped?

If it's anything like track racing then if you're lapped, then although you're still in the race, you're not supposed to get involved with anything that could affect the race result.
