why didn't Tony Martin sit up and wait for the peloton to lap him in order to lead the sprint for Greipel?

Is it not allowed to get lapped?

No, lapped riders are disqualified. Last year the early break nearly caught the peloton before the racing got serious which would have caused major embarassment....

No commentary and I think that's Cav you can hear scream as he crosses the line: http://www.cyclingfans.com/node/3604

Also the NOS Dutch tv commentary is a winner, a laugh of amazement I think it is as Cav surfaces: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oze48Z0FDdo

    Great stuff.

    Ha! Quite.
Indeed it really is shocking when you look at that fact.

As soon as he had stopped he turned round looking for his team mates to thank. He knew the effort that had gone into getting him to those final few hundred metres.

Exactly, the first thing on his mind after crossing the line was to find his team mates.

Yes, it wasn't in HD even though shown on ESHD channel. If you press the "info" button on your Sky controller whilst a HD program is on you should see the "HD" symbol above the program description when a program is in HD and the coverage yesterday did not have this. That said, the picture quality is much better on this channel than it is through the normal ES for some reason giving the mistaken impression that it is HD.

Is it just me or is there no coverage of the actual moment Cav emerges from the pack? It seems like he goes from somewhere 4-5 back to the front in the time it takes for the TV camera to zoom down the final straight. Brilliant! had me and the kids on the edge of the sofa.

Good riding by GB, left to fo it all despite several other teams being set up for a sprint win (Germans early on excepted) and managed it. Then when the control got lost in the final couple of ks Cav showed he doesn't need a lead out train just a team to keep the bunch together. HTC win with their main sprinter, 2nd with their no. 2 sprinter and last season's no. 2 sprinter third. Anyone get the feeling the management didn't do a good job of marketing their success over the last few years to potential sponsors?

The finish line camerawork was consistently poor in both elite races. The problem was that one fixed position camera was zoomed in too far (and never on the important riders, so you got a view of some also-ran while the action was left or right out of shot) and the other camera was initially too far back and attempting a dramatic slow zoom in to the approaching riders as they neared the line.

It's only the after-race overhead shots from the helicopter that show clearly what happened.

Just watched it on the iPlayer. I kind of agree with Iain, you really only needed to watch the last 20 mins. Having said that, the GB squad did a brilliant job, all of them.

Doesn't the UCI vary the styles of course to ensure that different types of rider get a chance to win?

As a result, periodically, we have to watch a flat sprint fest.

The race in question he didn't so your right in saying that, as for Cav well we can all make monumental f uck ups at times.

Yes it is. Mark Cavendish won. On a two wheeled bike. Any more stating of obvious whilst not answering my question you'd like to do?
  • Bit of sentiment (admittedly just a little!) that the race was a bore-fest.

    Given this is the right place for opinion - here's mine;

Seeing GB (please could they get some nicer strip??!) on the front for so long, I started to convince myself that the tactics were pants. Just could not possibly see how one country could run the entire race and have any real expectation of doing anything other than limping over the line - a spent force. Half way through was getting really quite irate. Some at other teams just sitting back and some at our poor lads on the front.

Exasperation levels rising as the kilometres rack up. Last lap perhaps less so as wiggins puts in the turn of all turns (olympic payback - 'now we are even' perhaps) and I start to think maybe just maybe.

We all know the finish - yes a little more sketchy than preceeding 260km but never have I shouted at telly so much!

So yes - GB totally and utterly bossed the world champs (how good does that sound!) Yes it was one of the most dominant displays a country has laid down in this race for many years. Yes - if you've got no allegiance or huge patriotism , it was probably a bit rubbish. For me, I'm so proud of those guys. They all deserved a medal, not just short-stuff!

Literally cannot wait to see Cav in his stripes - and I hope olympics doesn't get in the way of him doing major justice to the jersey.

I have virgin+ (well tivo) and i think the picture upscales to 720i when connected with an hdmi cable if the picture is not 1080i hd ...

I also noticed that as soon as Eurosport advertised the HD channel the picture quality of regular eurosport went down a fair bit ... except when showing an ad for the HD channel ...

As much as i hate cavendish, he totally deserved the win today. It was a masterful finish, and on this day, i will say, cheers, you earned it

Justwatched it again on iplayer. Didnt dawn on me how much of an effort wiggins put in. that was something special.

Team GB as a whole really went ball out for that. only 1 plan that everyone knew and they still pull it off. As many have said (especially Iain :P) not the most exciting race unless you have a vested intrest in the winner. But tactically was a very interesting race! (think that is why I really like watching sprint stages.)

I also think some credit should go to DM, he was playing the "team captain" role and he obviously judged things pretty well.

Did the lack of radios make the race better ? Doubt it.

Can I thank myself for getting tactics right as no Sky, Ooops!, Team GB rider, I should say, was put in the break as Cav was the best bet for the win. All hands needed to keep the race together for the formal sprint at the finish.
Must admit the GB Team's wheels fell off after Wiggins pulled off the front and we must thanks the Aussies for filling in the gap until the final. Thanks you bunch of GALAHS!!!

Also nice to see Cav on the top step with his two lead out men getting 2nd and 3rd!!
