  • If anyone's doing any tip trips and spies some 700c wheels, shimano or sram, please grab them for me! I don't mind paying a couple of quid but the emphasis is on mucho cheapness!

I've got some 700 road bike wheels and a freewheel you can have - in London - interested?

Also Snookster - I've got wheels on the way and a bid in a frame - unforunately I'm on leave from Friday so my bike build will be on hold.

I will however in the spirit of bike tinkering - post up my completed project bike this weekend . . . It is lovely . . .

I'm in Lincoln, how much do you think postage would be?

    A great big ball ache . . . . .

Tell you what - when I get the MTB wheels in the post I'll see if I can re-cycle the box.

do you have weird drop out spacing - 10 speed cassette do the job yes?

Something else I've just found out is that I can't use v-brakes with STI levers. Likewise can't use by v-brake levers with cantilever or "normal" caliper brakes.

As always Sheldon explained it all....

The project bike is Frankenstein actually but not visually.

Sounds like a plan! As for the cassette, I don't really know. I know the shifters are 9 speed, could I use a 10 speed cassette and just not use one of the cogs or not? You may have guessed that I'm far form an expert at this bike assembling thing!

That's due to needing more cable pull. There are ways around it but as you've got flat bars and shifters I wouldn't bother. Build a hybrid, you know you want to.

Your shifters are indexed then the indexing probably won't be spaced right.....

I'll take a look at them.

Ebay snipers are pointless with the auto bidding thing that Ebay uses now

Assuming of course that people are savvy and mature enough to bid their max off.the bat. Which they ain't.

True, but even so, if they whack their max in at the last few seconds, it will beat any sniping thing.

Yeah, but that's just sniping manually.

    My strategy...
Pick highest price willing to pay
Wait til a few mins remaining.
Set autosnipe to snipe at 3 secs
    Go make cup of tea
Come back to find if I've won

Stops me getting into bidding wars and paying more than I wanted

Makes no difference. Sniping programmes still work because people don't know how to bid.

Besides, the auto bidding has been in for years.

It works with old 7sp shifters and an 8sp cassette, but the spacing between 9 and 10sp is different, so it won't index at all.

Next question is that it comes with some drop handle bars, so do I try and swap my tripple flat bar shifter and brakes for some 9 speed tripple STI and keep it as a drop bar or do I make it a flat bar.....
Are they flat bar road shifters ?

9 speed road/MTB are compatible at the back, but NOT at the front.
    At the front:
Shimano road pull < Campy pull < Shimano MTB pull.

So usually you need a road front mech to work with road indexed levers, and and an MTB mech to work with MTB indexed levers. Though sometimes this can be bodged.

How do the rules apply to bikes partially built from parts you have lying around?

I've just finished my singlespeed hack bike. I'm vaguely aware that it cost more than I was expecting it to, and I'm slightly worried about totalling it all up.

If anyone wants a 56cm 2008 Boardman Comp road bike frame, forks, seatpost and clamp? I've also got some wheels from it that need the bearings replaced if they're of interest. PM me and we can work something out.

  • Still trying to source some wheels for my Carrera Gryphon that was kindly donated! I shall then get it running smoothly and then set about making it stand out from the crowd! I've managed to source one wheel disc so, I can't decide whether to stick with one of go hunting for a second one. Any one know where I can get photoluminescent paint?

Bought some brake levers on fleabay. Been promised a crankset by a colleague. Got some handlebars off another colleague. So progress is being made.
I have come to the conclusion that I should really paint the frame. Or, will that add too much weight?
All I need now is a set of shifters, grips and possibly a front mech.
  • I have a front wheel lying around and a back wheel with a broken rim for breaking (spokes and hub) if anyone wants them....

What size? Don't need them myself, but others may like to know. Ta.
Anybody with a set of unwanted 8 speed shimano MTB shifters? Payment in beer is always on offer.
