I made this for about £50. I had most of the bits, only bought the forks for £30 and the brakes for £20. Probably no more than £100 worth of stuff hanging from the 21st anniversary Daewoo MTB frame.

    A vague spec list is:

Headset: Ritchey Scuzzy Logic Pro (from my Enduro)
Forks: Manitou SX II (They weigh in at 1.6kg, but are awful forks)
    Brakes: Shimano Deore V's
Cranks: 300LX with a random super fancy SS ring, and the original BB
Wheels: Round ones from random bikes, and made from random parts from other wheels. SS 16t singlespeed cog. Random tyres.
Finishing kit: A seatpost, Art stem, Kalloy risers, Titiec/Bonty barends, WTB Pure V saddle, Odi Yeti grips.
Half a shimano mech as a chain tensioner, currently tensioning a £1.50 chain from eBay, which came complete with a missing link :D

To aid somebodies Frankenbike project I have a pair of Bianchi XL Levitation wheels - circa 2000, carbon hubs, 16 spokes on front, 24 on the rear. Black semi-aero rims. Couple of replaced spokes. They are Campag wheels.

Haven't been ridden more that 15 miles in 10 years. Free to good home. Collection from city or Morperth.

Hi mate - I've sent you a PM re the wheels.

    Cheers.
  • Possibly not strictly a frankenbike but I just need some grips and then mines all complete and with the exception of a new rear brake cable, and frame stickers was made up entirely of what was lying around

original Orange Clockwork frame- rattle can spray job in white
very old marzocchi bombers (bit of seapage from one stanchion) 1" steerer
Headset - lower half from old shimano LX threaded - top half unknown make but 1" threadless
raceface prodigy stem - had to use shim to get it to clamp onto1" steerer
    Mary Bars
XT rear brake lever onto LX V brakes (used some discarded hydraulic hose for the cableouters)
    Hayes front disc brake
Front wheel - non descript hub with rigida rim
    Easton seatpost
WTB rocket v saddle -patched up with (matching) duct ape
    un 54 bb
truvativ cranks - attacked with angle grinder and file to turn into single speed.
cheap resin pedals that came free with last bike purchased
rear wheel - deore hub onto unknown rim
rear singlespeed cog is botched from a couple of old cassettes taken apart with spacers used to get best chainline
old shimano rear mech used as chain tensioner
Bontrager semi slick tyres - (used once to do Mary Townley Loop - not big , not clever, lots of blood.)

I've got this "just hanging around":

    b2.jpg

It has SPD-SL pedals on. Does that count? :D

The Coca-Cola livery is how I bought it new in 1988 or so. As I recall though, it was a Nigel Dean frame, but to be honest I've no idea if that's correct, nor why they'd be selling frames in Coca-Cola decals. I think I bought it from Ron Kitching mail order - the bike has "Ron Kit International" handlebars on it.

Does the pump have a mount or does it wedge in perfectly?

I fear my main bike is more of a Frankenbike than some of the examples posted

They were like that then - frame mounted pumps which fit alongside the downtube, for when you didn't have the hooks on the toptube.

I'm thinking about a change of direction. Decent cheap retro steal road, touring, CX frames with V-brake mounts either don't exist of are expensive. I'm thinking now about a MTB, something I can take off road, while also being the N+1 for the commute. This mean finding a MTB frame and a set of wheels. E-bay here I come....

    Ah - ha

I'm ahead of you and am already making progress and mistakes . . . .

I've bagsy'ed Snooks Old Marin Frame:

and have just bagged a smart set of wheels for 56 squid

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330603768906?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

    Now then . . . . .
    6 bolt disc

    Ahhhhhhh

    Read the stories!

    I know two things:

    1. Snook's Marin does not have the widgets to take disc brakes
    2. Nothing about disc brakes

    So . . .

Can I run disc brake rims with rim brakes or will they explode - much like washing your bike with fairy liquid?

Hooray - first purchase made and already i'm running into incompatability problems!

  • Those rims have no braking surface. You will die in a fireball if you use them.

i dont think disc brake rims will have the surface area for a rim brake to "brake" on if that makes sense?

    OH Fer Feck's Sake . . . . . .

    Right then . . . .

I'm going to have to either give up Snook's Frame or the wheels - the wheel's I've just paid for . . .

feck feck feck feck feck feck feck feck feck feck feck feck

If I stick with the wheels then I'm tied to disc brakes and that juju is just a mystery to me . . .

    Fecking hell . . . . . .

This is why Frankenbike is so much fun - you lot are having a great time now . . . .

Who knows anything about disc brakes....?

I read once that you can just zip-tie them to frames that don't have the correct mounts...

I was reading some stuff last week about disc brakes with quick release front wheel causing the front wheel to come off. The info was old but would put me off them on a old MTB...

    OK . . .

    I've run out of brains.

I'm going to do the most sensible thing . . .

Build a bike from the wheels up . . .

In disgrace I'm giving up Snook's very nice frame and must now labour to find a frame with disc brake mounts (obviously incompatible with any actual disc brakes) . . . .

How I manage to eat with a knife and fork without gouging my face is beyond me....

What you need is one of these dohickeys:

They convert non-disk frames to disk compatible. Simple, and cheap.

I have been very slack and haven't done much about mine. I have a large MTB frame that will take discs or V brakes. I have a set of V brakes, handlebars (x2), stems (also x2), wheels (rear for rim brakes front for either), rear mech, front mech (bottom pull, need top pull), forks and a head set.
All of these parts are used. I bought the frame and V brakes and have spent about £30 so far. I still need a crankset, shifters and brake levers.
Greg, if I can turn up some reasonable quality cheap discs I may be able to help you with V brakes and we could come to an arrangement about wheels. Maybe we should gather everything we can Womble style then see what we've got.

I want to make a fixed with straight forks and discs - hence my perpetual dalliance with the idea of a cotic road rat...

Greg's reject up for grabs again.....

If anyone else is after a free frame and some bits, I had to make a bit of room...(but I've since found out it hasn't made that much room but it's ready to go anyway)

Here's the frame with bits on.

    Marin.jpg

It's 1994 (i Think) Marin Pine Mountain 17inch mtb, slightly too small for me at 5'10, but I managed to ride it for a few thousand miles over the years

It comes as the frame, seatpost (with QR, but don't get excited by the quality of the QR...it works, though you might have to make up a new coke can shim), BB and stem and V brakes with cables, SPD pedal (again don't jump for joy too much, they work, but they aint pretty), no wheels/gears/bars/brake levers/cranks

It's free! (though feel free to bring beer)

It's all taped up and ready to go.

It comes in a fetching rust with metallic green and green paint splatters to be found after riding through a patch of wet green paint.

    For collection from Stratford

Any takers, who actually want it this time! ( :P to Greg)
