police know better than most exactly what happens when they react robustly and the public get up in arms about it.
This is very true. The police are always in no win situations with a lot of the public. It only takes one scrote who happens to be passing by (obviously innocently) who gets hit in the eye with a plastic bullet and the Daily Mail goes berzerk.
Still, reasonable force and protection is needed. Shoot them.0 -

They could send the police/army in with paintball guns filled with paintballs containing that anti vandalism paint that doesn't come off/leave a mark on for ages?
1) it hurts a fair bit
2) can't really kill anyone unless you get a headshot
3) you could find people afterwards and it would prove they were in the area0 -

Or use the watercannon with the dye they have in the security cases, anyone seen with said dye gets arrested simples. Even better is 'simunition'. Paint pettiest fired from rifles using real gunpowder. Hurts 10 times as much as paintballs and if hit in the leg at close range is painful enough to make you limp! (trust me)+ 1001 posts reset by the cruel cruel moderators!

So I was listening to five live and a police commissioner said that the reason water cannons aren't being used is because they aren't trained to use them and plastic baton rounds will only be used in a last resort.
I thought that last resort was live rounds and they messed that up on Thursday!0
