Turns out that Manuel Cardoso saw the wreck:
"(Weylandt) then looked behind to see if he would be better to wait for other dropped riders (some 20). While looking behind, he hit with his left pedal or the left side of his handlebars on a small wall and was catapulted to the other side of the road when he hit again something. It must have been terrible."

    Both inaccurate and insensitive.

RIP - Wouter Weylandt and since Fabio Casartelli's name has been mentioned and the sadness we are repeating again today.
Then after Fabio's death there was a Neutral Stage the next day (that a texan cashed in on) so there might not be a race on Stage 4.

    What a hell of a Loss. :(

    Edit.
The well travelled road down the Kemelberg has been diverted for 3/4 years as too dangerous

Jesus! Shaking my head in disbelief at this part of your post.

    Have you no manners?

You can criticise Armstrong for a lot of things, but not for his conduct in that case.

Well said. For the uneducated, the stage the following day was neutralised with all prize money going to FCs widow, and Motorola allowed to ride over the line together 10s or so in front of the peloton. The following day, Armstrong pulled of a win as impressive in deed as it was in circumstance to finish alone and dedicate the win to his team mate. I'm no fan of the man but that, and his continued support for the family were marks of class.

I am, in spite of my sadness for Weylandts family and my bemusment at a young life cut short, proud that I can say I take part in a sport that honours its participants so.

Sad, sad news. Prayers go out to his family, friends and especially his wife. Rest in peace Wouter Weylandt.

David Millar summed it up very eloquently (without an exclamation mark in sight).

On a day like this you still cant let your bitterness go can you, your are even using the death of a rider to have a sly dig............quite sad really.

David Millar's comments show his class and humanity. Cheers Millar and Gamrin:

“I will wear the pink jersey tomorrow, but it will be in memory of Wouter, there is no celebration or glory, only sadness. I will discuss with Tyler [Farrar], Leopard and the family of Wouter what we as a peloton will do tomorrow.”

“The next few days are going to be very difficult for us as racing cyclists, but for Tyler, and the friends and family of Wouter it is going to be a lifetime of loss.

“I love cycling, and I've always been enchanted by the epic scale of it all, it was why I fell in love with it as a boy. Yet Wouter's death today goes beyond anything that our sport is supposed to be about, it is a tragedy that we as sportsmen never expect, yet we live with it daily, completely oblivious to the dangers we put ourselves in. This is a sad reminder to us, the racers, what risks we take and what lives we lead.

“My wife was in tears when I spoke to her after the race because she couldn't understand why the live television was showing him receiving medical attention when in such a horrific state. All she could imagine was that it was me. I haven't told her yet, that like her, Wouter's girlfriend is five months pregnant.

“I am trying to imagine what that would be like to see the person I love most in the world in those circumstances. I can't, and in honesty, I don't want to.”

A few photos of attendees at the funeral. From the looks of other pictures there was a large turnout and a screen outside the church.
