How old are the newbies to road cycling?

Another MTB refugee.
The MTB industry tried to redesign the wheel about 4 times over in as many years. Pissed me off, got a CX bike because I couldn't tell if I'd be able to get parts for any new MTB. Tried road biking and now I'm addicted to Strava and riding so much faster. Was bored to death of my local trails, there are just so many more roads than dirt tracks where I am anyhow.

Age 39
Having recently taken up running, I had to give it up due to a foot condition and wanted to continue being active.
No cycling history / been pretty lazy for the last 15-16 years.
I was bought a Cannondale Synapse Ultegra Disc as an early 40th Bday present from the wife.0 -
Hi just joined this site,I'm 52 &decided to get on a bike after 40 odd years,I've recently moved from London & feel more able to ride a bike with less traffic.I'm enjoying it although a little slower & wobbly at times.
I'm looking for a buddy to go cycling with I'm in BRAINTREE0 -
Only 20, took up cycling as a way to build some fitness, explore the area around where I live and as an excuse to eat fish and chips !!0

Hi, all!
I'm 21 and just getting into road cycling. My boyfriend cycles and has gotten me pretty addicted to it so far
I bought a Specialized Dolce Elite E5 and am super excited to get riding regularly. I've always been quite active, but I've had a lot of hip/knee problems that have taken me away from running, so I was looking for a good cardio workout without killing my body - hopefully I've found my niche!

33.
Long time MTBer, I bought a hybrid to pop to the shops/pub on and less than 1 year later I'm daily commuting on a titanium racer and obsessing over Strava segments. N+1 has a lot to answer for.0 -
Hello, I'm 25
My reasons for picking up the sport is more or less to get into shape and hopefully lose weight, and as I don't like simply going for a run or jog I thought cycling would be a better fit. I will add, as crazy or strange as it may sound, my interest was also partially influenced by anime, Yowamushi Pedal (for those that don't know it, it's an anime about a high school cycling team in Japan)
Also what cylcling / exercise / fitness history do you have? I use to play soccer about 7-8 years ago and use to ride a basic bike from target around the neighborhood about 10 years ago, more recently tho I've had a very sedentary lifestyle. I've been riding now for the past month and have already set a long term goal of riding the entire Virginia Capital Trail (a 52 Mile multiuse trail from Williamsburg to Richmond)
I bought a used 2011 Trek 1.5 (I think that's the year, it wasn't stated by the person I purchased from)0 -
Started it for fun and it quickly became a hobby. Racing is even a more fantastic experience. Am now working on Time Trials with a Shiv TT0

I'm 50 this year. Started last year and love cycling. But in all honesty reaching the 50 yr milestone has given me a slight jolt. Just can't believe I'll be ....50 years old this year -June.
Apart from that seem to be finding my legs properly since xmas 2016.
Still need a lot of work on endurance. Yep that's what I said endurance. But short bursts of sprints are nice and about 15 to 20 miles a few times a week are good too. Cycling bug is a bad thing. It can totally take over :shock:0 -
I am 31, and recently started road cycling due to my knees starting to give out.... I have always been an avid runner, and all those miles and work labor are beginning to hit my knees hard, so the good ole doc recommended swimming or biking. I recently purchased a Tommaso Illimitate and love it so far.0

Why? I had to stop running due to issues with my feet and the mechanics of my feet / legs not really being in favour of running! http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/tc/p ... overview#1
History? Limited. Worked too much, travelled too much with work and started out on my new MTB about a year ago. I set myself the lofty target of doing 10 miles in one ride! This weekend I just completed 50 off-road miles with 3k ft of climbing.
Finally what bike have you bought / now use? First got a Norco Fluid 7.1 https://www.evanscycles.com/norco-fluid ... e-EV211740, then thought that a CX would be a nice stablemate: https://www.evanscycles.com/cannondale- ... e-EV239421 and then picked up a 2nd hand Cinelli from eBay.
So I've been riding a little over a year now, started out and refused to do road riding. However, it's now my favourite discipline, and enjoying commuting to work a couple of times a week and spending a few hours on Saturday and Sunday out exploring the roads local to me0 -
56. I started cycling to work and then realized that I hated my old Mountain Hybrid , so I bought a new hybrid. Then I bought a CX bike. that was almost 2 years ago. I can't see me making a complete change to glass flat road bikes. I like adventure and rock-hopping to much, but I can ride roads with what I have. Its given me a path towards weight loss too.0

38, just 1.5 years on bicycle. Before i did martial arts (shotokan karate) and rowing. Lots of injuries, like disc hernia, broken shoulder some other bones ive stopped for sometime and got overweight and i was thinking to go back to the gym but the idea to stick on a room doing the same thing all the time it wasnt very very appealing to me. Then i saw some pictures from a FB friend with cycling, and i asked some infos. I started with an old shitty MTB, on 3 months ive bought a trekking bike, in 8, ive bought a road bike (Orbea Avant H30 2015), and in 15 months ive replace my trekking with Felt Seven 30 2014. Ive lost 10kg, and i am more happy than ever. Bicycle is the best antidepressant medication.
Now i do on average 200km per week. Saturday's are road bike days, and Sundays MTB.0 -
38, though 39 in 1 month.. Up until now it's just been mountain bikes (the "racer" I had as a kid doesn't count, the tires weren't much thinner than my MTB ). Just purchased my first road bike 2nd hand (it hadn't even been ridden!), though yet to do any serious cycling on it (hopefully this weekend!), so just been setting it up in the meantime for comfort.
My full sus MTB was starting to feel a bit unwieldy on the road and cycle paths, and wanted to try something different.
Now I have a fleet of 3 bikes0 -
36. I've got 5 mountain bikes so I thought I'd come over to the dark side0
-
I'm 41 today....Really only started properly late last year. I was, and still am, mostly a swimming, but you do get to see a hell of a lot more on the cycle and the people are cool, more friendly and inclusive.
I am still a newbie and am learning. But I do love it.0 -
I'm 56 and bought my first road bike last October and have now done over 1200 miles on it. Love it - and wish I'd started years ago, especially as I can't stand swimming, running or the Gym. Planning to do a 70 miler this weekend and about to treat myself to something a bit more fancy - can't decide between a Synapse and a Canyon, decisions, decisions...0

53 now.
Started off on an an MTB 20+ years ago then stopped for years with family and child commitments (stupid I know). Got back into mountain biking properly in 2009. Then in 2013 I inherited a mint condition early 90s road bike, which I renovated last year. Although I love it I realise now that it's too big for me as I've been having tendonitis symptoms in my shoulders after riding more regularly. So I reckon its time for a new bike :-).
I'm lucky git basically as I'm semi-retired and live in a stunning part of Andalucia, Spain where we get 300 days of sunshine a year. It really is perfect road biking country. Anyhoo, I never thought I'd ever be a road cyclist, yet here I am.Cool, retro and sometimes downright rude MTB and cycling themed T shirts. Just MTFU.

21 years old, and have ridden for 14 months. I played football, basketball, baseball, and golf growing up. I grew up spending every morning in July watching LA in the Tour de France and have been appealed to road cycling and racing ever since then. My college has a huge bike race that I train year round for (Little 500) and we race 200 quarter-mile laps around a cinder track on Schwinn single-speed coaster brakes with unsealed bottom brackets and 32mm tires. They are the most fun-crappy bikes I have ever ridden. Where I attend college now is a great area to ride, so I worked and saved up the money to get started and am having a blast racking up miles on my bike. I ride a Felt AR and might buy a track bike in the future.0

37, only just got my first road bike in June after years of trying to persuade the missus to let me have one (she's was worried about me getting hurt or worse). Had a few teething problems with position and neck ache but changed saddle position and that seems to be easing with every ride. I haven't ridden as much as i would have liked due to going on holiday, etc. but the rides i have been on, i have absolutely loved every minute of it. Need to get more miles in my legs and can't wait to go out this afternoon and tomorrow!
Also, i absolutely love Strava, and was v proud of myself last week when i get PB's all the way on the second half of he ride and was 2-3rd quickest that day over a number of section! It just gives you that extra incentive and bit of fun, and shows that i'm improving and getting stronger
I wish my missus would have given in 5 years ago when i first wanted one!0 -
I'm a 54 year old and over the last couple of years used a mountain bike a couple of times a month during summer.
My employer advertised the cycle2work scheme and as I was retiring at the end of 2017 I decided to get a road bike, this was December 2016.
Got a Boardman Team Carbon and love it.
It was hard going initially as I live in Derbyshire and there's plenty of hills around here. But stuck at it and mainly ride on my own. Strava is a great way to stay motivated as when I get back from a ride I check my times and generally improve somewhere during the ride.
I've done a 100km and a few 50 milers but have a target of doing a 100 miler before the end of this year.
Last week went for a ride out near Scunthorpe where I have a static caravan and did the first 10 mile in under 28 minutes and that was when the schools were turning out so had a few delays.
Love the hills but they are Killers but I always like a route with a FEW on the ride.
Did a 52 miler a couple of months ago and it was 5,500ft of elevation and boy was it hard but when you look back its very gratifying to see you managed it.
my first proper bike and go at cycling on roads and I cant get enough of it..0 -

25. Used to cycle to college when I was 16 but my MTB took a back seat when I got into cars and motorbikes. Partner and I are in the final stages of getting the money together for a house deposit so I sold the car and chucked the money into the pot. Started commuting on my old Giant MTB but after a few weeks I gave in and ordered the Carrera Zelos that Halfords have on sale. Pick it up on monday and I'm looking forward to getting some miles on it!0

Over 60. A buddy (who has ridden since high school) challenged me to participate in a century with him. We had to hit the cutout for a Metric century that day, but worth the effort! Going to ride a 75 mile with him next week...sneaking up on the true 100.0

24, active but haven't cycled for 6+ years, and just purchased a Btwin 540 road bike.0

I'm 30. Been in love with mountain biking since my teens despite the fact I've rarely had the time to indulge in it. Got bored of the job I was doing and ended up at Halfords as a cycle tech. By chance got the chance of buying a returned flat bar roadbike cheap. Ended up buying bits and bobs as stuff came on sale and bundles through our suppliers. Converted to drop bars with 105 group set and here I am, a roadie lol

36. Started cycling in 2007 to get into triathlon, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Time for training for all three disciplines later became an issue and I enjoyed the cycling more. I was hospitalised in 2011 with heatstroke and it took a while to get back into any sort of fitness. I then struggled to get the performance I had before and used my demoralisation as an excuse to spend more time in the office, gradually ending cycling in 2013.
I was trying to sell my bike to free up some funds earlier this year, realised that although it was a great bike, it was outdated and would get me about 1/3 what it was worth to me. So I started riding it and I'm so glad I did. The freedom, exhilaration and sense of wellbeing that comes from riding a bike is just immense.
Just wish this rain would clear up now!0 -
Been heavily into MTB, just started with a road club that welcome newcomers. Giant Defy 4 from a Few years ago0

I will soon be 30 and just got my first road bike 4 weeks ago. I've always been into trail riding but since moving house I haven't really had the opportunity to ride off road. There are miles of rural roads on our doorstep that we've been exploring and after getting frustrated about how slow my mountain bike is compared to my partner's, I bought myself a basic road bike. Now I love going fast and going long and being exhausted at the end.
An extra bit of road cycling I didn't anticipate is planning the routes. I love getting the OS map out finding different roads and local attractions to cycle past. I'm finding out loads about the local history of the area.
One thing that puts me off is the weather though, it's been a pretty crappy summer up here and I'm a bit nervous about riding in the rain and wind. Should I just bite the bullet, do it and realise it's not too bad, or should I wait til I'm more confident on the roads with other traffic?0 -
I stopped physical activity from 20-24. I am trying to get my fitness at a comfortable level again.
what are your reasons for picking the sport up? I am 24 years old and maleFitness and I really like how fast you can get going.
