Hello everyone im 28 and I started cycling three years ago I started on a 23 year old trek (passed down in my family) touring bike that I loved the frame was 4 inches too big for me and finally some of my spokes started to dry rot so I picked up a Cannondale Caad 8, buying that bike and wanting to upgrade it brought me to this forum, I hope to learn a lot during my stay
  • hi guys - ive been road cycling now for about 2 months (on a regular basis) i started about a year ago when a friend gave me his old road bike which was completely trashed and said fix it up and its yours mate - well i was given some new wheels and a few other bits and got it up n running - however now i have just gone out and bought a new frame :D - and im looking to upgrade the old parts and get new ones - im an mtber at heart though !!

    Hey guys.

I'm 24 and just started biking, hoping to compete at an amateur level at some point. I have a mountain bike with slick tyres at the moment. Any advice at all would be great.

21 years of age. Was quite fond of riding a mountain bike (only a 'ride when I feel like' basis), as I live in a pleasantly hilly area, so just bought a road bike for a new challenge. Funnily enough got into watching the sport a couple of years back after buying and wearing vintage cycling tops, being into the old 60's 'mod' scene.

How old are the newbies to road cycling?

    45 Years Young

And what are your reasons for picking the sport up?

My friends brother recentley passed away and we have decided to raise funds for charity in his honour and chose to ride the Manchester 100 on sept 2nd

Also what cylcling / exercise / fitness history do you have?

I used to be a bodybuilder up untill i was 24 years old and left the sport as i could no longer compete against other competitors who used banned substances etc
Ever since then i have been a long distance runner running pretty much every distance from 100m sprints to marathons and love pushing my myself both physically and mentally

Finally what bike have you bought / now use?

    2011 Trek 1.2c

Interested to know your thoughts - answer as many as you want and give as much history as you want.

    Cheers

Having not used a bike in over 20 years as you can imagine i have had a little to get used too clipless pedals and gear changes are no longer on the downtube the tyres are so much thinner and so is the seat .....

however the bike absolutley flys and i can see myself liking this little foray into cycling it aslo seems a littel easier on my joints etc
I may even take part in a duathlon as that is something i have been wanting to do for some time now

    None

Got a 2nd hand Apollo TDF. It does me at the moment and im loving getting out. Only small rides at the moment about 9 miles, thats enough for me at my age and fitness level. Onwards and upwards :-)
  • Hi,I'm coming back on here as have been away for some years. 8)
    I'm 59 & pretty unfit.
Reason is to get fit, lose a few pounds.

Got a Klein Attitude MTB at present, want to get a hybrid or road bike,as trying to get back into road cycling.

No fitness stuff ,since I cycled in my teens!

Did 14 Miles with my Son last Sunday ......now I'm suffering with a bad knee! Was fine after the ride, but 2 days later :(
  • I am starting owing to major foot problems which prevents me from running. I'm 43yrs old and used to play football and run.
Don't call me sir I work for a living
  • Im 35 and have been mountain biking since i was 14 i have decided i want more speed on the roads so decided to get a road bike not actually got it yet as still looking around
  • I'm 48.
Recovering from heart surgery, and the Dr told me to cycle more.
Been riding a mtb for 10 years on and off.
So I've just brought my first road bike ( B'Twin Triban 3) since my Raleigh Racer 35 years ago.
Because of the weather and my condition I've only ridden it once for 20 minutes.
But looking forward to putting in some miles in the coming months.

  • Im 20, 21 in October, starting Road Biking due to a charity event next Summer, cycling the john o groats lands end to raise awareness for musuclar dystrophy since my dad got diagnosed with it. Just bought a Condor Squadra to train on and do the ride! Very excited to putting in the miles!

  • Well done Adam..a great thing to do for charity, especially for you personally
  • Hi
I'm 52 and have now owned a 2nd hand road bike for 2 weeks and am loving it!... I last had a road bike with dropped handlebars in 1977 with the gear levers on the down tube. I rode a mountain bike regularly about 15 years ago, but haven't ridden regularly in ages.... hence my rear end is suffering at the moment! :(

I want to get fitter and lose a bit of weight. I've got a slightly dicky hip and I've discovered cycling, like skiing, seems to sort it out for me. I was running but that was giving me other problems.

I'd like to be able to do a local organised 70 mile ride in 8 weeks time, but I'm starting to think that may be a bit ambitious. They do a shortened 50 mile route, but I'd really like to make the 70! Ultimately I'd like to go to the alps with my hubby who's been road cycling for a few years now.... but that might be a pipe dream!

Firstly I need to get more confidence with my clipless pedals and buy some better shorts - mine are circa 1986 :D
  • Hi all,

    Age; 19
Reasons; Just started triathlon and being able to cycle is pretty useful for that...but I have been interested in cycling for years just never time due to other sport commitments to get started.
Fitness history; Football, hurling, swimming and as I've said, just starting up on tri.
My Bike; That's still a work in progress..
  • I'm 31, and not a total newbie, as I used to do time trials, grass track and triathlon back in my 14/15-18 year old days. Just got sidetracked away with my football, and socialising. Now have to say the Olympics has inspired me to get back on a bike.
  • 46 years of age, commuted to work on a mountain bike 10mile round trip, played rugby untill my knees went then changed jobs which needed a car.
Used to love being on the road, consumed to much food since stopped 7years ago, got poisoned recently with something called alcohol and decided to do the Ironman.
Picked up a Carerra Virtuoso (2006 model) and am getting ready to hit the roads again

I am a 51 year old new to a road bike (had one in the eighties but so long ago). Have had mountain bike for a few year but never been hard core on that. Up to 25 miles based mainly on time constraints and thinking of adding a commute in now and again.

Love the exercise and the quite obvious health benefits. I am really regretting not discovering this years ago. Late for my train the other night, legged it up two elevators and along the platform, and only when I sat down did I realise I could breath and wasn't a sweat soaked smelly lump in a suit....thanks bike ;)

picking it up because I'm moving University to somewhere I can't do any rowing.
Got a history of 7 years of rowing and I'm still pretty light so hopefully I can get good at this.

been riding a £300 Viking for a year and a bit buying myself a Felt AR4.

I'm 27, but have been cycling since the age of 23.

My first bike was my aunts bike! I used to go to and from work, it was in the countryside so wasn't bothered. Then about a year ago bought a Viking bike for £180 new. It was a big mistake, as now buying a b'twin Sport 2 second hand!

Just a note for anyone who is thinking of buying a cheap bike (under £300) it's not worth doing. Fair enough my Viking did the job and it got me into cycling but it needed constant maintenance and eventually will need upgrading...or replacing.

I mostly commute, but starting to do 60+ mile journeys and plan on doing a trip to Scotland within the year...

I'm just 33, but was heavily into MTB and BMX in my late teens/early twenties.
Ive had about 6 years off a bike, and dug my old marin rocky ridge out and then realized how bloody awful long travel forks are on the road, so I'm trying to purchase some road iron :)
Should help me lose a few lb's too!!

I haven't unfortunately. At start of season I got series of injuries (broke my wrist amongst them) which put my training off for a good while. Now I'm doing the exams I missed so can't really get back into training. I think it'll be next season before I can get my first one under my belt.

I'm 34 although did a lot mtb'ing at school and for a few years after but then like most people got a car found pubs, club etc :D then did quite a bit of mtb'ing again about 4 years ago but never really stuck as kept needing to travel around for the decent trails so got road bike along with the g/f (Giant for me Trek for her) she didn't like it so they were sold  recently just got myself a nice TCR Advanced 8) to loose a few pounds, get fitter and enjoy riding again ! Been out loads on it in this nice weather. Need to get myself a Garmin though  best thing is you can just go straight out on them and when you get home they don't have crap and mud all over them !
  • I'm 29, I lived on my Mountain bike and bmx when I was younger.

Let myself go a little over the years fitness wise, thats the main reason to take up cycling again. Also can't do running/high impact sports due to knee injury.
    I've just purchased a specialized Allez 16.
  • I'm 40, live near Wakefield in West Yorkshire. I had road bikes as a kid, usually Raleigh something or other, then passed my test and apart from the odd mountain bike which I didnt really enjoy havent ridden for a while. Played sport all my life, but quit football about 6 years ago when the back caused groin and hamstring problems all the time. Took up golf and am now a 7 handicapper. Started going to the gym in the New Year to regain fitness and lose weight, but got bored with doing the same things all the time. So on the back of my interest in the Tour (watched since 86 on Channel 4) and the Olympics, I decided to get a bike on the ride2work scheme. Went for a Specialized Allez Sport from Evans, got it Friday 10th and straight away went for a "short" ride. Ended up doing 15 miles in an hour, getting used to the gear shifters and clip in pedals, absolutely loved it and couldnt believe how quick I could go, also felt great this morning (Saturday 11th) no aches or pains.....well apart from in my backside which is on fire.....how long does this last!!!!!!
  • I'm 21.
Have been into MB for about 3 years now for commuting and going out on local trails and general rides. Decided to plump for a road bike earlier this month and have just got myself a Trek 1.2 yesterday afternoon along with some Spez BG shoes. I went and did and 12 mile ride this afternoon and it felt great. Already looking at getting some extra gear so I know how my performance is going.
Hoping to be able able to a 100mile ride maybe around spring time next year.

    Onwards and upwards...
  • Hi Guys

Just got in from a 10 mile freshener to my Grandma's and back. I'm 30. I actually work in the cycling equipment industry, that's sort of why I got into it earlier in the year, that and recovering from a badly broken leg that stopped my playing football. Riding a Felt F95 and already regretting the Micro-shifters. Going to turbo train all winter and try to join a club in and around Leeds next year. Any advice, tips, points in the right direction and I'll be happy to hear them.

    Best

    Elliott

Well I'm 36 and live in sheffield ,getting back into cycling to shift some extra weight I don't want it's been about twenty years since I last rode so not gone for the bike I really want yet just bought myself a diamondback dbr pursuit to set me off used to ride everyday when I was younger then things changed I smoked and drank. But life is a funny thing I stopped smoking after my son asked me to stop and I remembered I loved to cycle so here I am. :D
  • I'mm 33 and not ridden a bike since I was at school. Just impatiently waiting for my cyclescheme voucher to come through. Placed a deposit on a 2013 model Trek 1.5 yesterday. Fair to say I'm excited and now cannot wait to start my commute. Going to be nice 14/15 miles each way.
