Taken from the terrace of our villa on holiday in Sri Lanka back in Sep '04
Without sounding too soppy and ghey, possibly the most beautiful sunset I have seen in my entire life, absolutely breathtaking.

Wow, that's some really impressive stuff, A.Palmer. I love the HDR stuff, it's just subtle enough.0
-
Cheers mate, yeah I think it can look good if it's not over the top, and it's helpful in exposing all of the scene properly cos i'm a filthy student and can't afford a load of graduated ND filters to help expose the sky properly so i have to rely on a bit of editing. I do think HDR is overused though and a lot of times looks horrendous, and seems to be a bit of a trend for it at the moment. I've seen a lot of photos that are not composed nicely at all, but have some over the top HDR done and seem to think it makes it good.0

See your stuff before A Palmer.....on flexi forums....I think you did a few pics of mine that I sent over once a long time ago.
Nice work again0 -
it's been quiet on here for to long now so a few more of my shots to see if we can kickstart this thread again.

Great pictures. Terrible riding though, they're not even on the ground! Bloody hooligans0

Nice riding pictures! Got a couple of buggy macros taken today, it's been ages since I took some new photos.

Can you guys give me some tips on taking landscape shots.
I recently went on a biking trip to the lake district and pictures of things within 20m came out well. Good exposure, contrast and colour saturation.
But when I would take a picture from the top of a hill of the landscape around me the results were a bit dull and lacking any vibrancy.
I got some good results by tweaking the photo using a photo editing software but just wondered if there are any tips to get good results without post processing the images?0 -
jairaj, unfortunately, the key to great landscape photography is near-infinite patience, and waiting for the right lighting conditions. If it's hazy, or dull, there's really nothing you can do, unfortunately.
Try and get some contrast - clouds casting areas of light and shade over the scenery can help, pure blue skies are pretty, but rarely make memorable shots.
Also, am ke sure the sun is in the right place in the sky. You don;t want it directly behind you evenly illuminating everything - that way you'll lose the sense of depth and shape.
Better to have it slightly off to one side.
As for focusing, unless you specifically have something of foreground interest that you want to make the main subject of the shot, then consider what the nearest object you want in focus will be, and try and use hyperfocal focusing, which will give you more depth of field.
With and APS-C SLR camera, you're looking at f stops around f10-14, with a focal distance of roughly 30 feet, which should give you everything in focus from around 15 feet to infinity. You lose a little sharpness this way, I find, but you gain massive depth of field.0 -
Other half took this one on Saturday, a brief moment when the kids aren't trying to kill each other.
Not great but I like it.Visit Clacton during the School holidays - it's like a never ending freak show.
Who are you calling inbred?0 -
thanks Yeehaa for the tips. You lost me a bit on the hyperfocal bit :? I have a Nikon coolpix P500 would you know what ball park settings to use for that?0
-
I'm on my phone at the mo, I'll find a link to a site that explains it later.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure if you can set the coolpix focus properly manuall, but what you can do is focus on an object that's the correct distance.0 -
here you, go, this should explain it a little better than myself - since I'm a barely litterate, ineloquent oaf

Been digging through the archives... Nothing near as spectacular as the rest of you but practice makes perfect right. :?
A run-down farm in Italy. Really wish I had known about HDR back then, I reckon it's the sort of building that would look stunning with a simple bit of HDR.
Don't know why I like it, but i do.
First time I ever really used macro, I was just messing around, but I like it. Think I've overdone the hue and saturation settings ever so slightly.
And this last one just for laughs...
(If these have come out big I apologise... I have reduced the images on photobucket but it appears that it hasn't come into effect yet.)0 -
Rather fond of this shot at the moment, taken on Saturday at Chicksands...

Took this the other day on a ride through Cwm Pennant. The whole valley has a beautiful peacfulness to it, as if the world is not allowed to encroach on this little place.
Anwyay, saw this gate in the dappled light as we approached the valley, and it seemed like something out of a fairytale.

Some of these photos are freaking amazing and its something me and especially the missus are wanting to get in too.
You lot aint telling us what cameras you're using for these top notch photos, both looking to get booked into some courses to learn too.
Been looking at the likes of Canon 550D/600D (600 for the movie features) / Sony SLT A33 / Nikon D5100, anyone have any recommendations?
Torn between them as theres pros n cons for all.0 -
My parents have been pondering over getting my sister a Canon 600D as a surprise. What does it have that the 550 didn't?0

Oh, got these fun shots today in Bangor. Really REALLY tricky shooting conditions, but I think they captured the atmosphere quite well...
