Agree that bike choice should definitely be up to the rider!

Cee, you said that Matt wouldn't have the strength to race 6 hours of DH. I merely said that a 24 solo is as tiring. Speculation admittedly, but I reckon very valid. The opposite assumption that anyone who can do 6 hours of DH could do a 24 solo makes no sense at all. I also don't think that it's a given that anyone who can do a 24 solo would be strong enough for 6 hours of DH, but my statement wasn't about 'anyone', it was about a specific world class rider, who's no slouch down hills!

Yeeha I must say you may think you can't have a reasonable debate with me, but it seems to me that I put forward very reasonable specific statements and you return them with generalised assumptions that don't hold true. Yeeha you yourself admitted you've never heard of any of the Pro XC racers, and yet you are still compare yourself to them. That's unreasonable, and you certainly don't listen.

No...I said I doubt he would be able to do the same number of runs as a pro downhiller.....his training is not targetted to that type of riding or endurance..its simply different, no matter how much of a slouch on the downs anyone is!

Sure he could ride for the 6 hours, probably without the slightest change to his heart rate. arm fatigue could easily be a very different matter. I honestly think most of the pro dh field would be ruined after 18 runs in 6 hours. and they train to specifically be smooth and efficient at that discipline!

I honestly think 'as tiring' is a total red herring. they are 'tiring' in totally different ways. Someone who has targetted their training for either type of 'tiring' will presumably do better then someone who has trainied specifically for the other type of tiring.

    anyway....back to the actual discussion......

what other rules/features would be good? extra points for fancy dress?

It IS impossible to have a reasonable debate with you because it generally goes like this....

Me "but DHers have generally more strength, and technical ability, although they lack the endurance and stamina of, well, endurance athletes."
you "no they don't, XC riders will destroy anyone at anything"

    Yep, it's really quite simple
Yeah, we reckon it would be interesting to see who turns out best overall, and reckon some less known, and less specialist riders could possibly take it. Although we're not quite sure on the rules or the format yet.

    one bike for all disciplines
the no fuss/orange britains best mountain biker (won by Steve Deas of I-Cycles Innerliethen)
the hamerstley one2one (won by Joe Barnes of MTB Cut/Orange dayglo pink bike fame)
a rant about how xc riders are da'bomb
some discussion about the relative strengths and weaknesses of xc and dh riders
a rant about some trail riders on 160mm bikes apparently being rad would be dropped and left for dead by roadies (i guess on a road bike on the road that would be true)
some stuff about relative performance (i.e. 50% quicker, rather than a number of hours quicker in xc or minutes quicker in dh)
rider can choose type of bike (but must adhere to rule 1 - same bike for all races.)
a general agreement that a 140mm travel bike would be the best compromise, but riders can still choose any bike they like.
extra points for fancy dress (ole cedric might go for that!)

so whos the rant directed at?
    No-one
I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...
    HiFi Pro Carbon '09

    LTS DH '96

    The Mighty Dyna-Sore - The 90's?
  • I think there's more chance of an ex-DH-turned-XC rider like Mark Weir winning it than ex-XC/Roadie-turned-DH like, um, I can't think of anyone who's been successful at that
