He's been cleared on technicalities under Spanish law then. How convenient.

    What a farce.

I'm serious when I ask this: is ther ANY Spanish rider that Spain has actually banned within the last 5 years? Whether from Puerto or anything else?

At present it means that it was officially won by someone who failed a dope test.

As the Twitter feed says, it's only the begining of the next WADA step which would likely result in a 2 year ban.
  • Hope he gets a ride in the Tour so we can see Andy have another go.

I'm done caring about the doping scandals. The Spanish situation in particular is too far past hopeless to get irate about.

Makes me despair about Spains attitude more than anything.

Disolving credibility is the price of a national sporting golden age.

I've said that here somewhere before.

    still sounds good though :)

    '88 anyone?

    Massive joke.

Spanish authorites have just taken a massive greasy, unwipeable sh!t on our collective cycling-fan-selves.

Is he free to ride this year now? This should make things interesting.

C'mon. It's not a fair playing field. You know it isn't.

According to a number of Spanish newspapers, the competitions committee decided to rethink its verdict on Friday last week based on article 296 of the UCI’s regulations, which says that an athlete can be exonerated if they prove that they had inadvertently ingested a banned product through no fault or negligence on their part.

So run that by me again. How exactly did he prove anything?

    Nothing unique in that.

It's pretty unusual when the failed dope test occured during said race.

Yes, David Garcia Dapena, who tested positive after Contador and was given a two year ban.

It is too simplistic to see this as just Spain fudging the issue / turning a blind eye / selling any semblance of credibility on doping they may have left down the river (although that clearly is what has happened). Principally this is a cycling centric issue. It is the sport which will take the majority of the backlash. It is the sport which is seen to have bent the rules (again). It is the sport which will have to carry the burden of clean riders looking at yet another top name seemingly getting off scot-free.

One can but hope that the UCI and WADA will do the necessary and appeal to the CAS. Much as I admire the swashbuckling spirit of Contador, and the guile and cunning of his legal team, I hope that such an appeal is successful and that the ban is upheld. Goodness knows where we are left in the event that an appeal is unsuccessful, but I can't help but feel that this another sad day for the sport I love.

    Mikel Astarloza

Wasn't he Basque?..Different kettle of fish that.
  • The sample was taken during the TdF tho' so nothing to do with the Spanish fools as such ... surely the rules of the TdF have provision for such instances and the ability to strip him of the title ... and then just let Contandor waste all his own cash contetsing it with WADA/CAS (a case that he won't win ...)

My only worry is that ASO own half of the Vuelta, and therefore will bottle it and let him ride as they won't be brave enough to not invite him to both their GT's ... esp. the Spanish one .... money talks in the end ...
