Whereabouts in Bourg are you staying? I've opted for 8 nights at Camping La Piscine just over the river at the foot of the Alpe. Not sure how good the campsite is but, provided the sun's out and the beer's cold i'm sure it'll be splendid.

Does anyone know what the time ratingsare for finishers? Gold, Silver Bronze..etc.. WOuld very much like to elevate myself above the all encompassing 'bronze' category..

I stayed there 2 years ago and its a great camp site with good facilities including a swimming pool (hence the name "piscine") with a bar. Its about a 15 minute walk into the town centre. There is an icy cold stream running down the side of the campsite which was fantastic for keeping the beer and wine chilled!!! Last year Silver standard for my age bracket,I am 38, was sub 10.30 if that helps.
  • yes Ive booked LaPicine. Been there last two years and it's very good. Was a little noisy with the dutch boys this year what with the world cup but overall is good. The Swimming pool is FAB , just watch out for the campsite owners dog wandering about!

Id avoid the campsite futher up the road Rencontre Du Soliel I think, nice site but there is LOTS of noise from cars and trucks going up the alpe from about 6am in the morning.

Im staying from Thursday before to the Thursday after, pitch 401!! The new Casino supermarket is 10min walk away and caters for all needs. Buy all your energy fuels in UK as they sold out and had none left on the Friday..

Medal times are on the website, 9hrs10min or so for gold in your in your 40s like me, im a 10hr man so silver

Guys these campsites okay for a motorhome? Travelling in style!
It’s the most beautiful sport in the world but it’s governed by ***ts who have turned it into a crock of ****.
  • Registration is open!! Just registered myself and now about to formulate the 6 month training plan!!

Not sure about camper vans at Camping La Piscine.. the standard of campsites is usually very high en Francias so i'm sure they're accomodated. Although, camping proper is much more fun!

    Looking forward to this already!
  • yes there were campervans at La Picsine last year.. check the website, i think u pay a little more than a for just a tent tho'. Good luck.

I'm in - only thing is I entered without the bracelet de chrono thing (used the French site and I don't speak French) which I now realise is the timing chip I need - still hopefully can sort that one out.

Club mate is telling me I need to do the medical certicate before the entry is confirmed - haven't got back to him but is that done in my own time or is there some urgency to complete that ?

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.
  • Tom - no urgency with the medical certificate. Worst case is that you can actually produce it at registration in Alpe d'huez on the Friday. In any event, you have between now and then to scan and email it to them. Usually a few weeks after sending it, you will see that your details change from 'incomplete' to 'complete' on the website when you enter your details. job done.

Thanks. Really looking forward to this - first time riding abroad except for a few 2 hour rides in Normandy when I took the bike on a family holiday.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.
  • luckily I am in too despite poor french, just need to get rid of the 4foot of snow to get out and start training again.Hopefully get the gold this year after a bronze and silver so far.

I'm in. 4th time for me, despite swearing all the way up ADH to never sign up again

I went for the French version - after moving to Luxembourg I can finally speak the lingo - but the English version is there too I think :?

  • Hmm.. I didn't select the bracelet de chronometrage at the selection point. do I need this to post a time for the ride?.. First time at the marmotte but I thought you'd be able to post a time from just being regestered to complete the ride, no?

I'm in - second time for me, must do better than last time (11 hours).

I'll be driving down and camping in Bourg. I haven't sorted the fine details yet but it's likely that I'll have room in the car for person + kit if anyone is interested in a car/cost share?

Has anyone entered and seen there entry come up yet when you check for it on the site?

I entered myself and 2 friends, have had the email confirmation and credit card charge but none of our details are appearing yet on the sportcommunication website.

    any ideas?
  • Entries are open now. We have posted on the forum already regarding this, but here are some useful tips on the Sportcommunication website/entry process. Good luck!

The organisers of 'La Marmotte', Sportcommunication, have opened entries for the 2011 event.

    The website: http://www.sportcommunication.com/

1.On home page, click on 'GRAND TROPHEE/CYCLING EVENTS'.
2.You can choose language by clicking on flag, top right.
3.Go to 'REGISTRATIONS' on the toolbar and choose how you would like to enter event (ON LINE or MAIL).
4.You will be asked for your name and surname. If you have never previously taken part in a Sportcommunication event, you will have to then click on MY NAME DOES NOT APPEAR ON THE LIST.
    5. Fill out your personal details on the first page, address, etc. (CP is your postal code). In the drop-down box choose whether you have a licence or not and if so, which type of licence (for a foreign licence choose ETRANGERE). If you do not have a licence, choose NON LICENCIE, you will then have to send a copy of a medical certificate from your doctor stating that you are fit to compete in such events OR have your GP sign a copy of the on-line form provided by Sportcommunications: http://www.sportcommunication.info/web2 ... icatgb.pdf Send a scan of your medical certificate or licence to:info@sportcommunication.com or by post:Top Club, BP 24025, 69615 Villeurbanne CEDEX, France. Don't forget to write your Sportcommunications ID number on this.
    6. On the following page, tick the Sportcommunication event/s that you would like to enter. If this is just La Marmotte you must tick the box under the heading LA MARMOTTE 'MASTER 174km'.
    7. On that same page check the box if you require insurance. If you would like a timing chip for the event, check the box that says 'CAUTION PUCE CHRONOMETRAGE 10.00 € x RACES'. This will give you a timing chip for the Marmotte and any other Sportcommunication events that you take part in during 2011. This will cost an extra 10€ which is refunded on returning the chip at the end of the race/s. If you already have a chip, enter the number in the section that says 'BRACELET DE CHRONOMETRAGE WinningTime 0.00 € N°....'
    8. Finally, on that page read and select/agree to the last 4 statements of race rules and regulations.
    9. On the next page, check your details. On this page you also get given the chance to add another rider (Add a new registration). If you do not need to add another rider, click on the payment button to enter your credit card details.
    10. You will normally be sent a confirmation E-mail and an on-line letter with your ID details. On the day that you collect your race number and timing chip it is helpful to have a copy of this letter from Sportcommunications as well as a copy of your race licence or medical certificate.

Be patient! The site will be very busy and can sometimes crash due to traffic. And remember, the earlier you enter, the lower the race number you are issued and the nearer to the front and earlier you get to start on the day.

Good luck! Helyn & Guy, King of the Mountains

@KOTM - cheers for the encouragement near the top of the Galibier this year. Much needed! :)

  • I would seriously recommend getting out a week early and doing the Vaujany Senior on the previous Sunday

I've done this and can recommend it. But don't get tempted to do the longer (173km) 'master' ride - it's too much before the Marmotte (unless you're an elite rider and can handle it). I did it 2008 and regretted it !

Also if you're staying in the area for the week then also don't get tempted into big rides

After the Vaugjany I usualy have a couple of easy rides and maybe a mid week ride to the Lauteret (50km and not too steep) - gives you a flavour of the road from the bottom of the Galib to the bottom of the Alp.

Apart from the obvious terrain - the other biggest factor is the heat. In almost every edition since 2005 (when I first did it) it's been 30 deg plus. Unfortunately you'll probably be climbing the Alp in early mid afterternoon and it can be hot !

Finishing is immensly satisfying - getting gold even more so !
  • Just registered for 2011 - oh dear !

    I'll be nearly 50.....................what the hell !

    Better start training now !
  • Anything under 9 hours is a good ride IMO (depending on your age I guess).

    Anything under 8 is exceptional.

    And under 7 - why aren't you a pro rider !
