Where is the info about the entries?

    Any indication on price?
  • The French version of the official site says that the first 3000 entries are at 75 Euros and the second 3000 are at 95 Euros (4000 places are reserved for Tour operators)::

The English version has no registration fees listed but if they're the same it would make the Etape much more attractive (I paid 220 Euros last year for entry only and wouldn't do that again!).

I'm leaning towards la Marmotte though if I do any European sportive.
  • I'd be worried about that descent off the top of the Galibier.

With such a short route there's going to be an awful lot of riders descending together, and that descent on the Lautaret side is long and ultra fast.

And what if it's snowing at 2600m? Would they divert to the Croix de Fer? I'm really surprised they chose that stage for the l'etape.
  • To preserve your race comfort, race number will be attributed according to your past performances and your sport level.

Best riders will start the race on the front and slowest riders on the back. The race should be more fluid:

    - Less speed differences between riders, so less overtaking that could make accidents and falls.

    - Less traffic jam in the first climbing when slowest riders are walking.

    - You will ride with same level participants

If they can do this effectively it should make the traffic jams a bit less severe. How wide is the road up the Telegraphe? Is it likely to result in walking like on the Marie-Blanque this year?

Only done have the descent from Galibier to Le Grave. Was my first ever alpine descent and it was raining !! Great fun but agree it is very fast although it isn't a constant down there are a few climbs as part of it.

Could see a few blow outs there too if slower riders keep on the brakes too much and let everything get too warm.

It's very wide, but it's just 17km downhill from the start in Modane to the foot of the Telegraph, so there will be a lot of riders arriving together.

It's essentially two thirds of the Marmotte, which is run earlier in July. The snow has usually gone by then and it doesn't generally get fresh snow in July.

First bit of the Galibier descent is fairly technical, but the second, longer stretch is much easier and should be able to accommodate a lot of riders.

And the roads will be closed too, so no need to worry about oncoming traffic.

Thing I'd be worried about is those ruddy tunnels.
  • Yes the race will be on to get to the foot of the first climb as far up the mass of riders that you can manage. If it's the major road down the valley to the Telegraph then you can expect to be cruising in the bunch at well over 50kmph.

    Midnight
It’s the most beautiful sport in the world but it’s governed by ***ts who have turned it into a crock of ****.
  • Ouverture des inscriptions le mardi 16 novembre à 12h.

    That to me says midday!
I think I'll be up at midnight though, just in case!
  • 12h is surely midday; 00h is midnight, no?
  • 12am is how Google translates the page.
  • 12am is how Google translates the page.

12am was indeed copied from a Google translated page. I would assume that 12h means noon CEST (so that would be 11am UK time)

Both open at the same time, if you want to enter both you need to make two separate applications.

The registration is asking for my best time in some event. As a first timer do I have to do this?

Done. Sorted. In for Issoire-St Flour. Took 23 mins and a couple of goes, but managed to get inside the first 3000 (so the cheaper entry fee).
Don't click on the Union Jack expecting a fully functioning English version. Only the French language version of the registration process is operational. Their 'English version' of the website is just a few pages of slightly quirky translation.
Between me & Eddy Merckx we've won pretty much everything worth winning on a bike.

Looks like the Alps one is the more popular - cannot get into that site at all. Act 2 is working fine, maybe less traffic.
  • the english page ONLY keeps coming back to Acte I - the alpes .....

    most frustrating
