I love it. Let's blame Vino. Get a grip haters. They was all cooked.
Cadel looked "wrong" on the first climb. He's just one of many nearly men.
Chapeau Arroyo. A really strong, weak rider."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -

Well said.
The leading trio looked like they were on a different climb to the followers - chalk and cheese.
Descending like Arroyo did is quite taxing, continually accelerating out of the numerous turns. He started the descent in the red more than likely, the final climb was always going to go that way. But gutsy nonetheless.0 -

Hardly a mountain-top finish, was it though? Big ring blast all the way.
Scarponi for the podium and Evans to fade.... evans still need to ride at the front for the rd jersey i guess
AND will have to set the tempo to get arroyo off the podium tomorrow thou.
If I were a betting man, I would put Evans down to have a stinker for stage 20. I always wondered if he came into the Giro with too good a form, and would tire in the final week.
Arroyo's place on podium is under huge pressure.
Basso, from Nibali, from Scarponi.
evans will make the effort rather than just bung it... he has to stay in positional contact with nibs and Vino and he can win the red jersey...
doesn't have to go deep with nibs basso and scarp if he doesn't have too
arroyo has the podium to ride for... but scarponi only needs a min and a half...
caveat: need to check the classemnets tonight"If I was a 38 year old man, I definitely wouldn't be riding a bright yellow bike with Hello Kitty disc wheels, put it that way. What we're witnessing here is the world's most high profile mid-life crisis" Afx237vi Mon Jul 20, 2009 2:43 pm0 -
Mortirolo climbed 6 seconds faster than in 2006, according to Mrs Evans.0

Chris Froome disqualifed today, after being caught holding on to the Sky car.
I've heard of marginal gains but holding on to a car is perhaps too much0 -

done him a favour really. he doesn't need tomorrow to contend with"If I was a 38 year old man, I definitely wouldn't be riding a bright yellow bike with Hello Kitty disc wheels, put it that way. I think they were debating about waiting for the Evans gang? :?
On the downhill, Vinokourov experienced the surprise of being caught by Arroyo. "I didn't want to take too many risks in the descent but apparently Arroyo made a different choice," the Kazakhstani said. "Once he reached me, he wanted to wait for Sastre and Evans. He counted on their help to catch the trio in the front. But it wasn't my choice. I thought that him and me were able to bridge the gap of 40 seconds.

Phew! I had to cover my eyes when Arroyo was descending.
Vino - you ain't goin' to get no co-operation from Caisse d'Epargne in the near future.
I did like Sean about Ardila - perhaps he's got a contract with CdE next year! Perhaps Samoilav too?
At least Arroyo got a round of applause as he rode off back to the bus.'Google can bring back a hundred thousand answers. A librarian can bring you back the right one.'

You missed the quote from the Cervelo DS: ""Carlos, Evans and Arroyo were the ones who worked together. Vinokourov, I don't understand his style of racing."
Whether they were cooked or not, or just playing silly beggars (Vino sprinting for the line?), it was still a shame for Arroyo to get so close and then miss out. Yes, Basso is by far the strongest, but I can't help get behind riders who show as much grit as Arroyo did today.0 -

vino is just off the red jersey in points he closed it down by 4 points sprinting for the line..?
he is now only 10 points off the jersey
nibs and scarponi are in with a outside chance of the jersey as well..
can't see evans getting the time back to the podium... they both may fight it out for the jersey as a consolation prize"If I was a 38 year old man, I definitely wouldn't be riding a bright yellow bike with Hello Kitty disc wheels, put it that way. I read he was DQ'd for getting tow from a motorbike.
I guess he watched Contador drafting off one last year in the Tour and thought it was fair game.0 -
Watching the recording right now. Sean just pointed out that when Vino takes his turn (yes he did take some turns!) the gap starts to fall. I guess the other 4 would have been happy to spend him on the chase, for their own benefit.
Vino has changed his objectives, he knows he can't beat Basso, so he wants a stage win. No point, therefore, in busting his boiler for Arroyo, Evans or anyone else. That's racing.0 -
Another great stage...managed to tear myself away from the web this afternoon and watch the highlights which eurosport kept moving back for the tennis| Well worth the wait though!
Really feel for Evans though, don't know why but I really wanted him to win the Giro. I think those that said he had peaked too early for Fleche may have been right. At least he got a great stage win and hopefully will keep the points jersey."I have a lovely photo of a Camargue horse but will not post it now" (Frenchfighter - July 2013)0 -
To be fair to Vino I think it was Arroyo with his thumb pointing backward saying wait for the Evans group, while Vino was waving forward to push on. But Arroyo must have nearly been spent after that descent.
Hats off to Evans, great to see a him racing to the end. He could have sat up any time and pulled the "I'm only training for the TdF card".0 -

Agree with all of that, if Arroyo was ready at the time he caught Vino, they could have gone on the chase together.
Evans is a true Champion 8)0 -
Vino is superb in this race, now he cant win but hes still fighting, he can have the red jersey.
Why should he kill himself pointlessly?
making him out as the evil one is disengenious, Basso wass as guilty as him but seems to have found the same form as a few years ago....
Arroyo is what makes the sport worth watching though it was noted here that this is the first stage where he hasnt seemed to be eating half the time the cameras were on him.
I hope he can still fight for a podium place.

Cadel still has an outside chance so it was still in his interests not to give up and continue to salvage the seconds. If weather conditions are bad, Basso doesn't like the descents and if he is pressured enough, who knows what could happen - not that I am wishing harm on any rider. If Cadel can get close enough on GC, he could yet pip it in the final TT. Some strange set of circumstances can sometimes happen.
Mind you, his power of recovery will be well and truly tested today - he looked/was completely stuffed at one point before battling back.0 -

You mean like Basso. That was also grit. Serious determination there and it paid off.Contador is the Greatest0 -
Anyway, I think we have an explanation here as to why he didn't work later on. It was Arroyo's fauly. Vino was the strongest out of all of them and would have been best on the flat so Arroyo made the biggest mistake there:
"I didn't want to take too many risks in the descent but apparently Arroyo made a different choice," the Kazakhstani said. "Once he reached me, he wanted to wait for Sastre and Evans. He counted on their help to catch the trio in the front. But it wasn't my choice. I thought that him and me were able to bridge the gap of 40 seconds. I wanted to win the stage." In Vinokourov's opinion, waiting for Evans, Sastre and Gadret wasn't an option so he decided to not cooperate with Arroyo later on.Contador is the Greatest0 -
