Early start today for this very long tough stage.

Hopefully we'll get some good action.

Basso has a new helmet dedicated to L'aquila. If someone want to get the bell end gets new helmet joke out of the way early that would be good,

3 out of the top 5 GC riders at the moment pass the Fanini "clean" test.
Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.

Ah, Ed Balls. Missed the PTP.

Will just have to console myself with the Basso joke.

    FWIW Pozzato for this one.

Today is the longest stage of the Giro, it comes on the back of the second longest stage yesterday. I expect some early action to get the breakaway going but everyone will want to be in this move, as today's a day when the sprinters won't want to chase.

The PTP pick was hard as I suspect a break could go with riders like Gerdeman in it but we'll see if the GC contenders liven up the second half of the race, riders who can cope with big distances will want to blow away the weaker riders.

I know there's another thread on this, but just how good is this Giro? Great stage selection so far, real variety, and arguably the best is yet to come!

    Bring it on!!!

Early move going with Arashiro, Codol, Grivko, Martin, Rabon, Serpa, but it struggles to get clear.

I am as certain as one can be about these things that an Acqua & Sapone rider will win today. They wear the Forza l'Aquila logo on their jerseys, and so will be incredibly motivated.

It's also a good finale for Garzelli, with an uphill sprint finish.

Big group away now, 6.30 on the bunch. The right teams must be in there.

56 riders in the lead group with a 12 minute gap, but all the big names in the second group. Could be an interesting day!

EDIT: Gazzetta says big names in second group but Graham Watson just twittered:
Sky has Wiggins, Cervelo has Sastre, Garmin has Millar & Martin; Saxo Bank has Porte, possible race-leader tonight... Vinokourov in trouble?

Can't be classed as an attack as it has 56 riders and Wiggins is in there - sounds more like the rest of the bunch have been dropped

This is going to be a tough day for Astana, too pull back the group. If the group can work together.

This is going to be intresting, could have a whole new leaders board tonight.

Wow - big action already. Wonder if either of the "Liquigas Two" are in that front group?

I reckon Astana will be happy to loose the pink jersey for a few days to let their riders get a bit of a rest - its still a long way to go and would be very hard to control the race for so many more days..

But giving Sastre a three minute head start? Surely that's a stupid idea, not to mention that Richie Porte would have 10 minutes in hand.

I doubt by the end of the stage it will be that much. Today is a long stage with some nasty bumps especially that 1st cat coming up @ 136km - Once they hit those climbs I reckon we will have a better idea of the outcome

But equally the type of stage will make a concerted chase harder so a small group of motivated riders could even open up a larger gap on the climb.

I wonder how many calls are being made and money offered to teams in the front not to ride.

4mins. If Arroyo, Tondo and a few others get over the Cat 1 OK, this Giro could get interesting,

I have bucks on Arroyo to finish top 6 :D
