  • Now you're talking!

I was looking at building up a Pugs at the start of this year, but was put off by the godawful new colour (that puke colour). I actually like the look of this.

Looking at the Salsa site, the complete build they show is not far how I'd have done it anyway.
  • i dont like those since i found out how much they cost, its obscene.

there was a long time when i thought they were a brilliantly different bit of thinking and ive always fancied a try on one to see what they go like, i knew they were pricey but figured they were so pricey because they were so good, but 10 grand(ish) is mental money and i think jones is a cheesewand.

that said, i completely get the idea of buying something you want regardless of the price when you have the money to burn, i would never want to criticise someone and what they do with their hard eraned/stolen money so just to be clear, i am criticising Jones for being a robbing tw@, not anyone who has the money to buy something i used to think was interesting.

After mcj78 putting it so well is it just me but can anyone else see several U turns in the above

Get the 10 grand out of your mind FFS, I paid just over 3 for mine. The list price is $5500 plus your components don't add up to 10 grand either $ or £.

Jeff Jones has a family to feed and a passion for his hobby, so why should he be a busy fool selling his wares for minimal profit when he can sell a few and make enough to enjoy life. Wouldn't we all like a bit of that life?

  • I think this is a stunning looking bike. Its like a piece of art.
  • cheers folks, yeah i will get a thread up when the salsa arrives too.......been told november.

as for the jones, yeah, they dont have to be as expensive, mine was £8,000 before shipping (around £2,000 duty tax etc), but it was a fully built bike by jeff, most people buy the frame and fork from him for around £3,500 and use there own parts then.

i paid £5,600 for mine then another £1,000+ on the moots stuff, that is very expensive, and also the Ti saddle and Ti cage, hence it is a very expensive build, but its the way i wanted it.

i was asked how much it was and people were shocked, i should of kept it private......

though looking at some of the builds on here, im not the only one with bikes that are silly money, ie over £5,000+, its peoples passion though.

    I don't follow?!?

Anyway, what are you intending to actually use the salsa for?
  • The Salsa Mukluk is intended to be used as a beach, sand dunes or snow riding bike, but it can be used anywhere from muddy rides to trail centres.

It's just a normal (heavy) bike with about 3" of travel front and back (running the tyres @ 9psi) .

Pretty sure you'd struggle to take it on a "normal" ride with those tyres, but it will rock on sand and snow.

first owner paid 8k and 2k duty.

it stands me at around 7k second hand. id like to not talk about the cost of this bike though, its about the bike, not money.

the salsa will be used for everything, most of my local tracks are flat, a single speed is ideal but i wanted to try something new.

i will still take it to trail centres and rides out when its wet, muddy and snowy!

  • Love the look of the Jones, very interesting bikes.

And that Salsa is absolutely fab, it kinda takes me back the feeling you had as a kid on a mountain bike and the anticipation of the larks you'd have on it, but now for grown ups! I'd have one in a heartbeat (1st time I've seen this bike, heard it mentioned but never seen it) 8)

The salsa does look like a lot of fun, but in the right conditions.
I can imagine using it for "normal" conditions would be like trying to drive a beach buggy round nurburgring though.
Or a supercat on a motorway commute.

Fuck the costs, its all about the looks and christ that bike is smooth.

So many people here dont appreciate it. Its like modern usable art. To own something that looks so beautiful but at the same time totally usable must be a gem

John Moore, That's not funny though, just amazingly accurate.

I would still buy this bike and at this price.

That might make me stupid but it's all relative, whatever makes you happy.

I've certainly lashed money on things that other people think is just ridiculous but it is that which make us all different.

Given the oppurtunity to own one of these bikes I would snap one up in an instant and once my new bikes is fully up and running I might just start lookinf for one of these to compliment the new one.

That's fair enough though. Some of these idiots, though, think I'm categorically, objectively WRONG for thinking it's a crazy amount of money.

Definately not wrong for thinking so, but then i think £20k on a road bike is crazy, but only because I only go on roads to link up the off-road bits.

If I was passionate about road riding (and I do get it, it's just not for me) I could probably find the justification for a twenty grand roadie.

What appeals to me with the JJ bike is that you are buying into a philosophy and style and it is that which affects us all differently. Do I wish I could ride like Jeff, live in the woods and sport some chamipnship winning dreads ? Hell yeah, but I won't ever be able to do those things he does, mainly cos I can't weld, I don't live in the woods and I'm also bald !!! :-)

For me though this type of bike would always be in addition to the one I'm going to be building when my I9 wheels arrive (fingers crossed next week).

Hey, Jez Avery, 1991 called, you're needed urgently. A room full of hippies is having a collective tommy tank about a conman doing some retro flatland tricks.

    Nice pictures Saltyman,

It seems to have kicked off again over on "the other forum". It certainly attracts supporters both sides of the fence.

I still want your bike :-)

    Cheers,

Are you including people like me who just think it's massively overpriced into the "people who hate it" category?
  • nah, i dont mind what people think.

i wouldnt of bought it if i didnt have the spare cash, as it is a very expensive bike, but had some good luck earlier this year and thought why not.
