its very nice, unique and personally the full guards set it off on jeff's. i would have one and wish i could come with you to see the stares you get, i bet its a great feeling!
I would have one huge grin on my face for sure, they are supposed to ride very well ineed!0 -
I love these, beautiful design and bench mark build.
I really like the whole ethos of Jeff Jones bikes and the Spaceframe is the standout design of his whole range.0 -
yeah, it certainly gets some looks.
kids just laugh at it, thinking its some wierd bike and people who know there bikes stop and talk to me for ages about it.
had a guy stop his car in the road to get a look of it the other day, he had never seen one apart from on websites, gave him a go and we had a great chat about bikes, took some pics then off he went.
never had that with any other bike.
popped into a LBS the other day too, the whole shop was gathered around it, never seen anything like it obviously.
note: Moots stem on route from the USA!roberts dogs bolx

Why the thumbshifters and BB7s?0
-
yeehaamcgee wrote:Why the thumbshifters and BB7s?
BB7s are what jeff sticks on the bikes he builds, he doesnt build many full bikes however, they do the job and are easy to maintain.
thumb shifters work best with the jones H bar, rapidfires just wont be suitable. most spaceframes run single speed, mines running a 6speed rear cassette on a single speed rear wheel.roberts dogs bolx

Excuse my ignorance, but what make it a singlespeed wheel, if it can accommodate a cassette?0
-
the rear hub is single speed specific, its bigger and stronger than normal, and with it being wider, it cant fit a normal 8 or 9 speed cassette on.
normally you could take a cassette off and stick a single cog on with about 6 spacers......but the chris king hub on mine has room for a cog and 2 spacers. it has a custom 6 speed cassette, nice and narrow and gives me 6 gears to play with but still has a very strong hub and wheel.

That's great stuff, even people stopping in car's to have a chat. I'm just over in sunderland only realised you're tripping distance away from here. If i see you i'll have a good chat too haha!0

this came today from canada.......after i paid the £33 customs charges first.......grrrrrr.
Moots Titanium open trial stem, 110mm/31.8.
quite light at 158 grams, matches the Moots post really well too.
also a picture of the one piece carbon steerer tube the jones has, the top cap screws onto a internal bolt too, no star cap here, as you can see.

the jones new saddle is here.......Brooks B17 Titanium 8) in brown, with hand beaten copper rivets, the thing is a work of art.
its loads heavier than the charge spoon Ti it replaces, but the comfort is unreal....well worth the extra money too, it should last a lifetime.
so happy i went with my heart rather than looks, this will be much better than a 'modern' looking saddle. i need comfort rather than looks/weight, so im looking forward to sticking the miles in on the beauty.roberts dogs bolx

That really is an awesome ride Salty. The new saddle looks just right.
Purely out of interest, how much, roughly, is a frame and fork package for one of these? Or is it a case of "If you have to ask, you can't afford it"?Happy trails.0 -

Yeah that got me wondering as well. Most singlespeeds i've seen have only had the cog and spacers put in the place of where the cassette would be.0 -

frame and fork are around £3500-£4000 to bring over, theres a very long wait though.
mine was a full custom built bike £10,000 (in december 2009) but £2,000 of that was the import tax.
i bought the bike second hand and it has still set me back around £7,000 so far........so shockingly expensive :oops:roberts dogs bolx

Love those h bars0
-
Would love a go on one of these.
So, what is their thing? Do they excel at singletrack or can they hold their own on the rough stuff?...That mega stiff front end makes it sound as though they might struggle?
Looks a special machine all the same.0 -
£7000 for a bike with avid bb7(or bb5) brakes, dissapointing
that looks great with the saddle now. i'm still not a fan of it but thatis a very special bike0 -
Nice looking machine, but at 10 grand you have to be kidding me. There is just no way it's worth that much.0
-
Jay that saddle is hideous
and yeeha i know but each to their own.0 -
i have had it around red routes, black routes, on road, rocky terrain, dry terrain, wet sandy terrain, have not found anything where im stuck behind or have to walk sections........so it does me really well.
i have loaned it out to experienced riders who all rave about it, and reading other reviews, im not the only one.
the Ti truss forks are very stiff, very direct and soak up the small stuff like a low travel fork would. the BB7 brakes are more than suitable for this reason, and they come with custom stainless brake hosing to improve feel.
obviously when you see a technical rider like jeff jones throwing it around single track, even competing in dowhill races, he can bring the best out of it.

I don't care if it was made from fairydust by the mother of the father of all gods, and took the patience of an entire universe to create, there is just no way that that many bits of tube can justifiably cost that much.
EVEN, if it can make the pictures of the guy riding it go all "MBUK angles"0 -
i wanted one, i got one, wasnt bothered on the price, the main thing is im happy with it.
i have bought 13 bikes this year, and this is the only one a care for. i never want to ride anything else 8)roberts dogs bolx

do you REALLY think that's a justifiable cost though? REALLY?0

yeehaamcgee wrote:do you REALLY think that's a justifiable cost though? REALLY?
to be honest, its a shocking cost, one time i wouldnt dream of spending that amount. i remember when i first bought a bike for £1,500 years back i thought what the hell have i done......eventually sold it to make myself feel better as it seemed crazy to be riding a expensive bike when i didnt need too.
now most folk dont bat an eyelid to blowing £3000 or £5000 on a bike.
i can ride a £500 around the same things as one of my £10,000 bikes and get the same enjoyment.
i guess we are all different, and if this was a car forum where people are driving around in £1,000,000 buggattis we would ask the same questions, roberts dogs bolx

Not really though. The amount of engineering expertise, and research and development, and the amount of people involved in bringing something like a Bugatti Veyron from the first idea, right through to production vehicle is immense.
In fact, Bugatti make a loss on each Veyron sold.
See, I recently bought a joplin. They are absolutely stupid money. They really are not worth what the asking price. BUT, I found myself in a situation where i needed a new post, and I had enough spare cash.
I cannot say that they are worth the asking price though. I'm not even going to try and kid myself.0 -
same with me really, i didnt want the jones because it was rare and had a 10yr waiting list, i simply admired them and was in the position to buy an as new one, so i thought why not.
been offered my money back many times, i have never had a bike where folk from all over the world want to buy it off me.
its that kind of bike. im happy to keep it for now, and i dont feel guilty of spending the cash on it, but yes, its only a Titanium bike at the end of the day.roberts dogs bolx
